The exception is if you record from the analog input, which will record SCMS=00. On the other hand, the Fostex D5, which we have in stock for $594, will actually change SCMS to 00 when recording from a digital source. This make it ideal for recording from DVDs, DirecTV, and other "copy-protected" digital sources, as well as DATs, CDs, MDs, etc. And of course, all recordings through the analog input are also SCMS=00 (meaning unlimited copies, even on consumer gear). I'm not sure I would buy this. I'm not sure about the other LP mode, but AFAIK sony's LP mode just uses a 12-bit logrithmic quantisation curve. Each sample is encoded by itself and does not depend on any other sample. Compared to the normal 16-bit linear quantisation, this just gives you a bit more quantisation noise / distortion at high levels. A linear mode has the same quantisation noise at all signal levels. This gives you a high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) for loud signals and a low S/N for quiet signals. Log mode has a quantisation noise which depends on the loudness so S/N is constant at all levels. This is not in any way the same kind of compression as used in MP3 / MD which is based on frequency analysis. Samples are analysed and coded in groups. This can result in odd frequency artefacts which are significantly more irritating to me personally. YMMV It's sort of like comparing Dolby (MP3) vs tape hiss (LP). - mark ------------------------------ From: "Onno J.R. First of all Bob is right on about everything. But I must say this, my cigarette lighter and many others do not work unless the key is at the very least part way turned. In that scenario, the car may not start in the morning if it is cold outside (like in the winter). This is because now your charge efficiency is way less than 50%! If your cig lighter does not work with the car turned ALL the way off, then I would direct wire the inverter to the battery. Also make sure the inverter can support what you want to use it for. For just charging batteries, I am sure it would not take much. But if you want to use it for other applications, get what you want. I have blown a few radio shack crappers and finally got a Powerstar. I can pull 1,300 watts continuous I use it with a solor power system I get like 130 watts (max); usually ~100 watts from the roof and that charges 4 gell cell batteries. I do not even run the inverter off of my car battery. But, when moving I have a battery switch which also charges all of the batteries after the car battery has been charged. The Powerstar inverters are pretty cool because you can either plug a strip right in or wire an outlet (or a sting of outlets for that matter). When buying addition batteries for a car or whatever, one should know that regular batteries off-gas and should not be kept in the driving/living quarters. That is why I use gell cell! I am talking about big batteries (like auto/rv/marine deep cycle). Before you buy look at the ecocharge draw on the plug (dont have mine handy) and if you are using two double the watt draw, or if not listed, multiply the amp draw (at 120V) by 120 and then double that and find an inverter which supplies that wattage at 120V. Radioshack has some cheapies, but once you blow it ;.... its gone and you better run back to that pretty girl who helped you as fast as you can and get her to help you get your money back;-)..... hope this helps. Here are all of the inverters you could possibly feest your eyes on..... http://www.realgoods.com/renew/shop/list.cfm?dp=1700 Anybody interested in the bigger systems feel free to email me. I have been wondering; I think one could match the correct charge controller with car battery and forget the inverter. If using two of the same kind of 6V batteries they could be charged in series as 12V. The charge controller I use is for two battery banks and shuts off at like 14.1 Volts. These charge controllers are cheap to (~20). They can be found at real goods also. I have an inverter , so I have not messed whith it. But, it might be the best way to go since you say you have 2 ecocharge batteries (at 6V I presume). Any how there are many ways to skin that cat! *Notice that statpower are the crappers that I blew and they are sold at realgoods also. They work, but do not even think about overloading them. In fact think about not overloading them ... no juicers, no vacume cleaners.... For a sample scenario, consider that you might want to put 10 amp/hours (AH) back in your batteries. 10 AH at 6 volts is the same amount of power as 5 AH at 12 volts. Now assume that the charging process is only 50% efficient due to the DC>AC inverter and the SC- 61 chargers (in reality, the process is probably much more efficient than 50%). With 50% efficiency you will take 10 AH from the car battery. If you have a decent car battery, you can probably to this 3-4 times before starting the car becomes an issue; a good car battery is good for drawing maybe 100 AH. If you want to be safe, start the car for a few minutes each morning after you charge the recording batteries. The car's electrical system can replace the energy used for charging in a very short time (given that your car starts right up. If you have a rig that must be cranked forever until it starts, then all bets are off.) I'm thinking about two Sennheiser MKE 104 mics, which are tiny cardiod mics. The 'problem' is that I can't find a place where they provide these mics as a ready-to-use set, like Core Sound does with their batterybox included and all. Can anyone give me some advice on how to make these mics suitable for recording with a MD or DAT? I'll probably need some sort of power supply to power the mics, which has to be as small as possible. Preferably the same size as the Core Sound batterybox. Maybe I can even use the battery box of my HEBs? I'm not a microphone specialist, I've only bought ready-to-use sets before. My brand spanking new D-100 and I are going to a David Gans show where taping is encouraged. I read a post on the Gans Trading list where David offers a Soundboard patch. So what should I bring with me to ensure a hook up? All the signals will be going into the DAT via the analog line in. I figure I'll need a Y adaptor for two 1/4" jacks into one stereo jack, and then a 1/4" to miniplug adaptor. I'm also bringing some nice studio mics so I'll have XLR -> 1/4" adaptors. Oh, and I'll also have a mini -> mini cable in case I'm somewhere down the chain... Is there any other type of feed that I might encounter? Any caveats? I have no digital cables, so hopefully that won't be an option. -jas ------------------------------ From: "Joshua" Subject: RE: Bootleggers Lurking on Datheads Date: Wed, 27 Jun 2001 10:21:29 -0600 How 'bouts we git together and have a little frontier justice? Subject: SBM-1 Battery Life Date: Wed, 27 Jun 2001 10:33:23 -0700 I just obtained a SBM-1 and I have a few questions on battery life. I've heard that they get about 2 hours on 4 AA batteries. Is this really correct? Also, has anybody tried the new Duracell Ultra batteries with that M3 technology in their SBM-1? According to Duracell: "DURACELL ULTRA lasts up to 50 percent longer than ordinary alkaline batteries" in high-tech devices. If I could stretch the life of SBM-1 to somewhere between 2.5 and 3 hours that would be wonderfull. Considering that most concerts by non-jam bands run less and 2.5 hours long. If the 2 hour window is pretty consistent. Does anybody know of a good CHEAP small external battery pack? I know about the eco-packs. But thats alot more then I really want to spend and there a little to big. Same with the oade battery pack. It dosn't have to be a rechargable battery pack.
