Could my dat be going crazy and need repart/cleaning. >Thanks for you help. My best guess is that your cables have a resistance difference. You will have a hard time measuring this. I write calibration procedures for testing electronic test equipment. Some of these measurements are made down to 50 ppm uncertainty (accuracy of 0.00005%) of low ohms. We have several techniques to get this kind of accuracy using sophisticated standards traceable to NIST. Needless to say you won't be able to do this with your rat shack VOM. First I would try cleaning all of your connectors with a cotton swab and isopropyl alcohol. If problem persists you did say that the mic to PS-2 when switched changes levels from one channel to the other. Get a new cable and see if they are closer. Only way to really get accurate results would be to have cables matched down to some silly nominal level. Cheaper would be to edit the levels on the computer if there is a significant difference. I note that my setup usually has the right channel about 2 dB down from the left channel. This is hardly noticable by the human ear over a 20 kHz range. Chuck Quinn ------------------------------ From: Robert Kane Subject: comparison tapes Reply-To: roekbarnet@ameritech.net Date: Thu, 28 Jun 2001 21:50:25 -0400 I am interested in hearing some comaprison tapes for a/d converters. I was saving up to buy an AD2K but I had a few tapers email me that and Apogee AD1000 would sound better with my rig. I am running MBHO 603a/KA200N > Lunatec V2 > DA-P1. I would love to hear some tapes using the same rig with either the AD2K or the AD1000. Tapes from the same date/venue would be ideal, but I'll take what I can get. I can B&P or trade from my list(URL below). Date: Thu, 28 Jun 2001 19:25:51 -0700 I wish I could now just go out and buy a nice "prosumer" full-sized/rack DAT with optical I/O to dupe with, but for now the next step is going to have to be PC and CD-R based. So can anyone recommend a good SCSI burner that plays well with Win2K, and the appropriate software that will let me do disk-at-once, either direct from my M1 or a list of .wav files? Also...I must confess to having been to perhaps less than 20 concerts in my 38 years (!), and am wondering if anybody's come up with any kind of earplug with a sort-of-flat attenuation curve? I was wearing cotton balls at a show last night but they cut the highs badly and made the vocals and even inter-song chatter very hard to understand. Thank ye.... ------------------------------ From: "Owen O'Neill" Subject: Re: recording stage sound, monitors etc. Date: Thu, 28 Jun 2001 22:47:37 -0400 Although I'm a neophyte with only a year of frecording under my belt and only three months of it on DAT (upgraded from MD)... I have speicifc expereince that is worth noting. A taper friend is the "house taper" at Stanhope House in NJ, where many great acts have played over the years (and continue to do so). He is given access to the house before the doors open and sets up his rig in the only place available due to the venue's small size and low ceilings. His Earthworks SR-77's are always on a bar in X-Y config and clamped to a pipe behind a ceiling beam about 6-8 feet back from the front edge of the stage (which is the only place availabel to him to place his mic's). Due to the size and layout of the room, the front edge of the house PA stacks are only a few feet back from the mics but off to the sides. I've patched from him on a number of occasions and alwats gotten a fantastic mix of the instruments (70-80% of which is reaching his mic's from the stage gear itself, not the stacks). The vocals are ALWAYS subdued, almost a bit muffled on these recordings, specifically because they are only coming from the stacks. There is no adequate solution in this venue that I'm aware of but it's a lesson well heeded (although I would try pointing the mic's away from each other out towards the stacks and see if it's better but he's stuck on X-Y for everything he tapes). Date: Fri, 29 Jun 2001 00:33:35 -0400 Sorry for the cross post.... but I've been taping/trading since the early eighties and have never seen a show spread so fast. I'd like to tip my hat and say thanks to Charlie Miller and friends for pulling the tape (and getting this out to the masses), and to Chris Wallace for so quickly getting me a DAT clone. I'd also like to thank Adam Berger for taking such sweet pictures and putting them online so everyone to get a glimpse of what we missed. I put together CD cover art for this show (using Adam's pics) and have just put it online for download. Surf on over to: http://www.mindspring.com/~goheels/rabbit.html to find a link to download the PDF file. It's only 230k in size, so it shouldn't take long to download.... but it should look pretty nice when printed. Enjoy...... There are several, ranging from "Musician's Earplugs" (about $15, 12dB attenuation) to custom-molded plugs from Etymotic (around $200 IIRC for both 15dB and 25dB capability). The Etymotics are extremely flat. My DA-P1 blanks out some audio information when playing a DAT tapes. It dose not always blank out the same spot on a tape. The spot seems to move around a trouble area. Sometimes it plays the tape fine. The size of the blank spots seems to range from 30 mS to 500 ms. I have seen the problem occur at the beginning of a tape and in the middle near where I started a new recording. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Any recommendations? * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * This email, including attachments, contains information that is privileged, confidential or subject to non-disclosure agreements or intellectual property laws.
