What about other cards in your machine? > SCSI card, ethernet, video...what brands? The ZA2 is notoriously incompatible with VIA chipsets, that are found on most (if not all?) AMD-based boards. There is also some talk that it doesn't like AGP video cards. Both of these combinations may lead to channel swapping. My card worked well in my Pentium box, and then channel swapped in an Athlon system. Booting into DOS and recording using RECDAT was fine, though (the card is now gone, to somebody with an Intel system). I just bought my first DAT, a used Sony TCD-D8 from ebay, and I'm having problems. My first test of the unit was to dub from CD->DAT. I plugged the two RCAs into my CD player line out and the minijack into the line in on the D8. I could not get a clean connection. One channel, usually left, seemed to cut out. I jiggled the minijack connector and the unit seemed to pick up the signal again, but not consistently. I could see the level pick up on the level meter. When I attached my headphones to the headphone jack, I experienced the same thing. The right channel would come in clearly but the left seemed very soft or inaudible. The level meter, however, indicated a full strength signal on both channels. I could get some signal to come through the left headphone if I jiggled the connector but usually this would force the unit to automatically reduce the volume to zero. What is the likely source of this problem? What are my best alternatives for repair? What is the expected cost of the repair? Any assistance is greatly appreciated. ===================================================================== Demetri Mouratis dmourati@linfactory.com ------------------------------ From: willard robinson Subject: CDr burn speed for archiving? (The Tascam had > no problem getting a signal from the DSD.) > > Do Sony portables not believe in the category code of the Apogee? (It > wasn't a cable problem, clearly, because the same cable worked with > the Tascam.) If you were using a "passive" cable, I can explain the problem. Keep in mind that the D8 expects TTL level (+5 V) but normal coaxial output level is 0.5V. If you use the correct Sony cable, the voltage level is changed (somehow), but if you have a simple "RCA Jack > 7 Pin", you probably need more than 0.5V to drive it... but perhaps not a full 5V. I suspect that the Apogee doesn't put out enough voltage to drive the D8, but the Tascam does. (I don't know what a DSD is). I'm not sure of the impedence of the D8 input, but if normal coaxial is designed for a 75 ohm load, and the D8 is higher impedence, then different outputs would react differently... the Tascam DAP1, driving "no load", could create more voltage than the Apogee into the same load. Of course, if it was a proper Sony cable (RK-DA10) or a true "active" cable from another vendor, this explanation probably isn't it. --Gary ------------------------------ From: GaoBest@aol.com Subject: ISO Spandau Ballet 1984-1986 concerts Date: Sun, 1 Jul 2001 03:24:20 EDT Hey kids Surely I'm not the only fan of Spandau Ballet on this list, but I don't have anything 1984-1986 - I only have two gigs from '82 and '83. The Sony owner said it was an active cable. (It wasn't an official Sony cable, though; it had RCA female in/out.) I've had similar problems feeding a Sony via optical outputs, and I know there's no voltage problem there. (In that case, using the official Sony cable.) Equipment: Sony MZ-R30 MD (sorry, but I still have to buy an M1) + Sony ECM-T150 mic. Recorded from left side of the stage, in line with left side stack. Recording level has been kept to -6 db (I didn't use automatic level). The sound is very good, with almost no audience problems. Unfortunately Jon was sick, so they only played about 100 minutes. I also taped 25 minutes of support act Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes. The 2 shows fit perfectly on 2cdr, I'm ready to trade for some 2001 live acts, like Aerosmith, Pantera, Soulfly, U2. Thanks for the space. Luigi ------------------------------ From: "rob landis" Subject: radiohead santa barbara shows Date: Sun, 01 Jul 2001 16:55:55 -0400 hey just got back from 2 nights of radiohead in santa barbara. tapes came out quite well. 6/29 was a really good set, and came out nice, but unfortunately it has a lot of talking. was anyone else rolling tape, from a better spot? i was towards the back. 6/30 is another story entirely. prolly the best show i've ever seen, and the maybe the best tape i've ever done. they did an awesome cover of neil young's "cinnamon girl" too. i was front row on the lawn, left-center side. the lawn at the SB bowl is right behind +above the pit, NOT at the back. most of the sound was coming off the stacks, but some off the stage, esp. drums, and some bass. NICE tape. both were done D8/CSB w/rolloff, 44k. 6/29 is 124 min, 6/30 120 min. the most interesting part is this tho.. --READ THIS PART EVEN IF YOU DON"T LIKE RADIOHEAD. (PLEASE?)... i got some really big (5"?) platform boots for the shows. they're only 60 bucks at goodgoth.com . they work GREAT. you know how the sound really improves when you stand up on your tiptoes? these boots makes a very noticable and very cost-effective improvement. bad part is that they're uncomfortable as hell. and they only go up to men's size 10/ 12 womens. the sizes run very small too. i usually wear a 10, and the 10s i ordered were way too small for me. i had to get out the butcher knife and enlarge them, then tape up the holes with duck tape and cloth. the only big platform boots they make in the normal mens sizes are the really nice and expensive ones, and cost like $150-200 . any entrepreneurs out there that wanna start a line of cheap platform boots? with holow platforms to hide gear in? also, for CSB users, i've had consistently really good results putting my mics on a hat maybe 2 in. above my ears, and a bit more towards the front. the higher your mics are, the better. and i never was too big a fan of the huge stereo separation binaurals give, that's why i moved em towards the front. just a personal preference. also, if you're at an angle in relation to the closest stack, or if one side of your head is much closer, it helps to position the mics accordingly. ok, let's say the stacks are way on the side of the stage, like most venues. if you're right in front of the left-side stack, and facing the speaker, you can't see the stage. if you're in front of that left stack facing the stage, your head is directly between the speaker and your right mic. this means the right channel will sound really muffled compared to the left. so what i do is just put the right mic way up towards the top of the hat; that way, it's not completely blocked. this technique has made a big improvement in my tapes recently, esp. the club shows. so, thanks for the space, and if anyone wants to trade, emailme. i can take some trades now, but not many since i have very little $. a better source of the 6/29 show would be nice, and my friend really wants photos or a video from 6/30. as always, i'm looking to get any rare nirvana shows or upgrades of shows i've got. some more top-notch radiohead would be nice, or some big black, or the pixies. thanks again. rob _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ From: "J.Garcia" Subject: quality tapes Reply-to: elektrik@navegalia.com Date: Mon, 2 Jul 2001 00:14:43 +0200 Hi, A few days ago, someone posted about his experiences with different quality DAT tapes, and how this reflected when playing back the tapes after some time of taping. I usually use TDK DA-R tapes, which are about 8.7 Euros each 124 min. Recently I tried taping with a DDS-1 tape, Imation 60m, and it seems it went well. Price for such tape is about half the cost of any audio DAT tape. Now, the extra cost of media means better quality of the media, and more reliability in the long run? Is there any comparison of DAT media on the internet?
