(rob@allstarupgrades.com) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Random Gnome Generator Subject: M1 battery summary Date: Sun, 1 Jul 2001 18:11:14 -0700 (PDT) Well, I promised to post a summary of M1 battery suggestions, so here it is. There don't appear to be any "smart chargers" out there for 4.5v, or if there are, I was unable to get info on them. I ended up using a D cell battery sled with excellent results. It's pretty portable and stealthable, so I recommend going this route. Here's the url again: http://members.tripod.com/~groovin/battery.html I'd estimate the hours as approximately 20 per 3 D cells. Very impressive. Thanks for all the suggestions and for letting me know this has been tested with good results. Thanks, Charlie, for the great instructions. There are plenty of smart chargers for bog-standard nicads. (I'd recommend Radio Shack high-capacity nicad D cells, most other companies just put C cells in a bigger package.) > I'd estimate the hours as approximately 20 per 3 D cells. Very impressive. You won't get nearly as much time, but you'll buy a lot fewer batteries. (If you also have a fake battery or a wire to short out one component, you can use 3 alkaline D cells in the event you don't have recharging available, such as at a festival.) I have a great ticket for Rod Stewart on Sunday 7/8/01, but I have to go out of town on business, and I am unable to go. I will give the ticket to anyone that could stealth it for me. I am a huge Rod fan, and this is rumored to be his last tour. Please let me know if anyone can help me out. Email me at frankn1@innernet.net. Thanks. I don't have any links off hand, but I recall that there is a discussion with a former Maxell employee who claimed that the Maxell HS/4 DDS 60M's use the exact same tape stock as their more expensive R-124DA Professional DAT tapes. The 90's, of course, use a similar but thinner backing with the same magnetic layer. I don't know if there is any such admission by Sony, but I highly suspect that this is the same case with their DDS-60P's and their more expensive PDP-125's. I have measured the tape thickness of both and they are the same, and optical microscope examination of the two looks identical to my subjective eye. I've not been able to get our QC dept. to let me make any electron micrographs of the two, otherwise, I could be reasonably sure. As far as tape shells, I've disassembled both Sony and Maxell DDS and Pro DAT tapes, and the components of the shells are nearly identical and only appear to have cosmetic differences. You can even mix and match pieces from the two shells and screw them back together and they work fine. As far as TDK Pro DAT tapes, I think the general consensus is that TDK is junk. I only have 2 of these in my collection but they seem inferior in construction to just about everything else except maybe DIK (I don't even know where the latter came from). They make a lot more noise when FF and REW'ing too. As always, this is my humble opinion and YMMV. I welcome constructive criticism. -- Wayne D. Results can vary wildly with the combination of burner and media. My old burner, a rebadged Ricoh 6-4-24, definitely produced better quality discs at lower speeds. However my new 8x recorder seems to work equally well at all speeds, even using cheap media that generated flaky discs on my old burner. The fact that ISO data discs have extra bits set aside for error correction can muddy the picture, as this extra redundancy can mask a slightly gamey burn. One potential indicator of quality is to see how fast a CDR will spin in a high-speed standard CD-ROM drive when reading data; many drives will fall back to lower speeds when they run into too many errors at the higher speeds. On my old setup, cheap media would often fall back to 8x, 4x or lower when burned at high speed; on my new setup, 50x or 32x read speeds are the norm. Regardless, it's really a good idea to validate the checksums of your CDR data files on a different drive before considering any backup/archive burn successful. -Michael ------------------------------ From: Aleal5687@cs.com Subject: Anyone Taping Krazyfest 4? Date: Mon, 2 Jul 2001 16:24:26 -0700 (PDT) I'm going to buy a DAT. I'm looking at the SONY PCM-M1 or TCD-D100. They are both about the same price. The PCM-M1 is $700 and the TCD-D100 is about $680 I know that the M1 doesn't have SCMS , but that's not a big deal to me, as I will be dumping to CDR anyways. Sorry, if this has been gone over before on DAT HEADS, but I only just joined the list. Which should I get, and why ? The cost is not a factor, since it's only $20 difference. Here are some questions. Are they both the same size ? What are the main differences between the 2 DATS ? Thanks for any help and advice. Also, if anyone knows where I should buy the DAT, let me know. An internet search turned up 2 places, American Digital and Terrapin Tapes, both selling the M1 for $700. Etronics has the TCD 100 for $680.00 If people know cheaper and or better places to buy, please say so. I have bought a few things from etronics in the past, and have been happy with their promptness. For $700, which is about all I can afford, should I be considering other brand DATs. Size is important to me, as I will be doing stealth taping mostly. Thanks, Later, Frank Wong __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Can anyone shed any light onto this? cm ------------------------------ From: rob@allstarupgrades.com Subject: CDr burn speed for archiving? Date: Mon, 02 Jul 2001 20:34:31 -0400 There is a common misconception that burning CD-R's at lower speeds than= the maximum speed will result in "better" CD's. This is not true; in fact the= opposite is much more likely. There is a very informative article on this topic at: http://www.emedialive.com/EM2000/starrett5.html The article is from last year so they refer to 12x and lower burners, so= the results do not necessarily apply to the newer 16x+ burners.
