The D7 and D8 require attenuation. --G ------------------------------ From: "Damon Ritter" Subject: re: quality tapes Date: Tue, 3 Jul 2001 22:29:23 -0400 >> As far as TDK Pro DAT tapes, I think the general consensus is that >> TDK is junk. I only have 2 of these in my collection but they seem >> inferior in construction to just about everything else except maybe >> DIK (I don't even know where the latter came from). They make a lot >> more noise when FF and REW'ing too. I bought once a Maxell DS-120 tape, and that was the last one, as it does make a lot of noise when FF, which is not the case for TDK DA-R Pro. Perhaps there are different models for USA / Europe, to make things more confusing? Sorry folks but using the noise on rewind/ FF is about as conclusive of a judgement of tape quality as is judging the quality of gasoline via a taste test. I have yet to find a tape that there was any consistent performance to noise on FF/ RWD relationship correlation. I agree, TDK is crap, but I base my judgement on personal experience with error rates, not on how noisy a tape is when whirling about in the machine...Maybe some of the folks with a little more depth in the statistics/ regression analysis realm can help..... Just got back to Nashville a few days ago after seeing the ComFest up in Ohio. Its a free festival for those of you who don't know, with plenty of great local/regional groups. Its an old festival, lets say a hippie festival, but more diverse than that, with very eclectic music styles: R&B, funk, rock, country, swing, rockabilly, fusion, alternative, and about 50 other styles. Anyway, I'd like to get in touch with any of you tapers out there who have taped the past ComFests. I know some of you read this digest. What have you got? I tape with AKG 3000s, an AT322 a few years before those. I'm still a unidecker, but can burn CDs (unfortunatly with SCUMS, I know, I suck). Anyway, let me know! Subject: For Tapers on a Budget... Date: Tue, 03 Jul 2001 21:35:11 -0700 For those looking a deal on carrying cases, Tonight I made my way to my local Target and I found something that I found useful to anyone who has a Sony Portable Deck. I found an almost perfect carrying case for the D3, D7, D8, D100, PCM-M1 and any MD deck (a DA-P1 and D10 I would think would fit too)... and it only cost $3.90 It’s called the “get in the game, game system travel case”. It was originally designed by Target for the Playstaion, Dreamcast and N64. But it works great as a nice cheap carrying case for DAT and MD decks. Its about 12inX19inX4in and padded very nicely. There are two main compartments with one having a Velcro divider (which is also padded) that can be moved around. The case also has some smaller pockets, inside and out. A shoulder strap is also included. To give you an idea what you can get into this thing. I have the following in it with a lot of room to spare: Sony TCD-D8 Sony SBM-1 A Pair of AKG c1000s A Pair of Core Sound mics Core Sound Battery Box XLR Cables RCA Cables 5 DATs Tapes 16 AA Batteries and…. Windscreens for both sets of mics Again this case was $3.90! Perfect for someone who wants to save a little cash. Here’s the thing. I have no idea if this is available everywhere. I found this by accident and it was located in the clearance section. I have no idea how much this is regularly. If you’re interested I would suggest looking in the clearance section of your local Target or the gaming section. If you can’t find it and you want one, the Target where I live has a ton of them, so I could grab one for you if you like ($3.90 + Tax + Shipping, $4??? = $9???) Stealthed from the rear of second section on the right, well out of the sweetspot. (grrr@reserved seating) Very directional PA that blew all the high end right past me, high end sounds a little mushy on the tape as a result. Omni condenser capsules into Sony D7 at 48khz. Very little crowd noise, virtually none in the 'wrong' places. Also mastered on DV video with monopod. My position was better for video then audio, but it's a little shaky from the distance. Anyone interested can email me for a trade, but I caution there will be a wait as I finish my current round of trading obligations. Date: Wed, 4 Jul 2001 17:05:12 +0200 | > All these cdr posts have me thinking, what _speed_ do people burn at when they | > are archiving their shows, Mitsui seems to be the medium of choice, but | > with 20x burners, what is the best _burn_speed_ for archiving? | | Results can vary wildly with the combination of burner and media. My | old burner, a rebadged Ricoh 6-4-24, definitely produced better | quality discs at lower speeds. However my new 8x recorder seems to | work equally well at all speeds, even using cheap media that generated | flaky discs on my old burner. The fact that ISO data discs have extra | bits set aside for error correction can muddy the picture, as this | extra redundancy can mask a slightly gamey burn. One potential | indicator of quality is to see how fast a CDR will spin in a | high-speed standard CD-ROM drive when reading data; many drives will | fall back to lower speeds when they run into too many errors at the | higher speeds. On my old setup, cheap media would often fall back to | 8x, 4x or lower when burned at high speed; on my new setup, 50x or 32x | read speeds are the norm. Regardless, it's really a good idea to | validate the checksums of your CDR data files on a different drive | before considering any backup/archive burn successful. | | -Michael NOOOOO!!!! 50x or 32x as a norm, that sounds horrible!!! Don't expect quality DAE if you read at those speeds... I extract my cd's at a max of 6x, which is quite fast i think. Maybe it's a good idea to use EAC [www.exactaudiocopy.de] with a precise configuration [http://www.ping.be/satcp/ although this site is having problems, it's really worth reading it!!!], and that will get the best out of your cd drive! cheers, Ewout ------------------------------ From: "Peter Hicks" Subject: Tascam DA-302 dual-well DAT deck Date: Wed, 04 Jul 2001 14:09:25 -0400 Subject says it all. There are 2 sets that come with the mikes, one is shorter with 3 holes in the top and one set is longer with multi holes and slits down the side. Can anyone tell me which is which, and better yet, which would be best for festival recording about 75 ft from stage, DFC.
