The answer to the question, 'What heavy metal cover were BTS playing extensively last year?' Mr. Crowley by Ozzy Osbourne! For those who were waiting on Death Cab For Cutie at the Showbox 6-16-01, it came out but has level issues which will require extensive tweaking to get it right. Hang tight for that one! From: Ruderallis@aol.com Subject: RE: New Oade Mod for SBM Date: Thu, 5 Jul 2001 19:16:50 EDT I may be wrong, but I only see the benefit if using something like the VXpocket. Unless you are recording 24bit, I do not believe the benefit to be worth the price. This brings up the other question of dither when using the modified SBM with DAT. It is probably not much different than using the U2A (24bit dithered to 16bit via USB) to laptop. I like DAT for now but I think there will be some firewire devices which allow 24/96 and some are already out there. The other thing is that the modified SBM does not work at 96khz and therefore ... uh well ... I just know the next A->D I get will be 24/96;) I guess that would be DVDAudio? Does it really make that much difference? 24 bit from 16, is it that noticeable? Thanks, Mike >>

From: "john kupchik" <blueskied@hotmail.com> Subject: ISO Dido and Emiliana Torrini Date: Thu, 05 Jul 2001 20:37:39 -0400 Hi I am in search of any Dido shows, especially from her current summer USA tour with Travis and Emiliana Torrini. I am also DESPERATELY in search of Emiliana Torrini gigs on DAT. I taped her on 6.28.2001 along with Travis (but got caught by security while taping Dido!). Is anyone taping her??? She's opening for Tricky on a brief west and east coast tour later in July, so PLEASE someone tape these gigs: July •18th Toronto, The Goverment •20th Boston, The Avalon Ball Rroom •21st Philadelphia, Theater of the Living Arts •23rd DC, Nine Thirty club •25th NY (own show at Joe's Pub) August • 3rd Portland, Plan B • 4th or 5th Seattle • 9th San Francisco, Fillmore •10th Pamona, Glass House •11th San Diego, Canes •12th Los Angeles TBA (own show) Emiliana Torrini is a wonderful artist, she's a 23year old half icelandic/half italian singer from Iceland. And she's a billion times better than Bjork is. She sounds like a perfect fusion of "Morning light"-era Locust and the Cranes. I have lots to trade, so anyone taping Dido or Emiliana PLEASE get in touch. all the best, john _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

From: "Gary Davis" <gdavis@loop.com> Subject: new Postage Rates Reply-to: gdavis@loop.com Date: Fri, 6 Jul 2001 03:27:09 -0700 Just one day after I bought 21-cents stamps (for extra ounces), the Post Office raises that service to 23-cents ... ugh... so now, first class US mail, the first ounce is 34 cents and each additional ounce is 23 cents. I usually allow 2 ounces for one DAT and 3 ounces for 2... For mailing heavier musical recordings such as video tapes, the USPS still has what they now call "Media Rate". This is basically a discounted 4th class service for tapes, books, films, etc. 1LB is $1.33 (compared to $3.50 for first class/priority), 2LB is $1.78. Keep in mind that you can't put more than 1LB in a mailbox, due to the Unibomber. (He hated digital recordings). Also, keep in mind the international discount rate called "Small Packet Rate" is gone, and the cheapest international rate is now called "Airmail Letter-Post" and costs 80 cents/ounce to Europe. Canada is 60 cents for the first ounce and 25 cents each additional ounce, and some countries are more... See www.usps.gov for all postage rates. Just be sure to scroll through the list of rates for the lowest! --Gary
From: "Ewout" <andr01d@gmx.co.uk> Subject: Re: CDr burn speed for archiving? Date: Fri, 6 Jul 2001 16:11:28 +0200 | Erm, I thought we've been talking about archiving shows as data files | (e.g. lossless-compressed .shn, etc) on data discs, not as audio | tracks on music discs. I do use EAC for DAE, and I certainly agree | that "high-speed ripping" is a sucker's game. Once I have a "known | good" version of a show, I compress and archive the sound files onto | data-format discs, where they are better protected and I can access | them as ordinary CD-ROM files, avoiding DAE altogether. An added | bonus is that I can store more music in a compressed format on a data | disc than uncompressed on an audio disc (typically 40-50% more). | Plus, higher speed read access of these ISO-format discs is safe | because (a) the CD-ROM drive detects and corrects errors before the OS | even sees the data and (b) the sound compression software I use | (Monkey's Audio) performs its own CRC checks. I make audio discs to | listen to but think that format should be avoided for "archiving" if | at all possible; it's better to eliminate DAE and preserve the music | in a _reliable_ digital format. I hope the original poster wasn't | asking about archiving to audio discs; if so, please reconsider! <g> | | -Michael I know, i myself use SHN and APE too [depending on the size, if i get something in SHN, and it doesn't fit onto on cd because of 50 mb or so i use Monkeys audio to save on CD's], but it's a waste of time to 'archive' your shows with a READ speed of 40 - 50x!!! That's even before the data format! That was the point i was trying to make... cheers, Ewout

[...] > [...] it's better to eliminate DAE and preserve the music > in a _reliable_ digital format. [...] One thing to keep to in mind, however, is that data discs can still fail, and when they do, you often lose more data than with an audio disc. On an audio disc, if a sector fails, you might at most lose that sector (but often only just a few samples). On a data disc, a sector failure might cost you a whole file (which could be a track or a whole show, depending on how you archived it). Even though you might be able to recover most of the file with the appropriate tools, depending on the compression format, you may not be able to use any of the data. I'm always a little leary of any compression format, unless I know it has a good data corruption recovery feature. (Can anyone recommend one that does?) Many times I've recovered most of the data in a corrupted text or audio file, but I would not have been able to do so if the file was compressed, as the decompression tool would have given up at the first sign of an error. The most reliable means of protection is redundancy: make sure you have several copies of anything important and irreplaceable. I always back up all the shows I record in at least three formats: audio CD (and/or DAT), uncompressed audio data files, and SHN-compressed audio files (preferably not all stored in one location). The latter are what I prefer to pass around, which acts as a further form of redundancy, increasing the chances I'll be able to replace anything that gets damaged. A little bit paranoid? :-) Perhaps, but if one thinks of all the great performances lost forever because of tape deterioration and carelessness, I think it's worth it. -- Michael

Would love to get my hands on a few of the sets, namely Neil Young, Tool, and how about the GnR set? I have many Roskilde masters from 1996, 1997, and 1998, but haven't been back since.
