I'm after 2001 James FMs and have many to trade from previous years. Thanks! ------------------------------ From: Frank Wong Subject: Where to get good 80min CDRs? Date: Wed, 11 Jul 2001 15:30:25 -0700 (PDT) I've been buying TDK's and Memorex's from places like Fred Meyer, and Circuit City, which recently had rebate coupons. I think Fred Meyer is only on west coast, as it's an Oregon store originally. I ended up paying $10 for 50 ($20 with a $10 rebate). Office Max also had Fuji 80 min CDRs for $10 with rebate coupon. Which brings me to the question, where are good places to buy blank DATs. I see people are using the DATA grade DATS, as they are cheaper and same quality as audio DATS. I've not bought DATs before, and they are hard to find in regular stores. So I will probably have to buy on the web. What about CDR sleeves ? I used to buy the Mediazone plastic sleeves, The ones you can fit 2 CDRS in. as you could get them from J&R for $4.99 for 25, but it seems they raised the prices to about $7.99 I am looking for those sleeves by CaseLogic or Mediazone where you can store your CDRS in a 3ring binder. If this info, including the CDR info, is in a FAQ somewhere, please let me know. On a side note, I have bought media from tapeworld.com and been happy with their service in the past. Regards from Chile Erick ------------------------------ From: acffhmorst Subject: re: Error Correction Date: Thu, 12 Jul 2001 00:05:24 -0500 I use the panasonic SV-3700 pro DAT deck to do audio via DAT -> SPDIF -> Computer transfer. The Panasonic 3700 and 3800 have an error counter built-in, but hidden, you have to hold down counter mode and reset, then press and release pause, then release the others, and counter mode cycles through the secret messages, which include error count. I read the manual years ago, and it said that up to 400 errors per second would be OK, and not audible, but I was told when I started using DAT that error counts of up to 40 were the most that were acceptable, and it was better if they hung out below 10. The sony DDS tape I am currently transferring had a count like 0,0,0,0,2,3,0,0,6,0,0,4,7,0,0,0,0,0,20,4,0,0,0,0,0, and so I would consider that fine. A little math shows that if you had 44 errors in one second of 44.1KHz audio, then that would be a distortion proportion of about 0.1%, when there are only 4 errors in a second, that's 0.01%. . .those are low distortion numbers, but then we have error interpolation too. . . One thing I'm not totally clear about is whether the error rate reported is for a single channel, or the total for both left and right? If it's the total for both, then you can divide my speculative distortion figures in half again, but only if each channel had half of the errors. . . but who knows. . . I look forward to portable miniature recording with random-access media so we can overcompensate and get our bits locked up tight. Hope this helps, or is at least interesting. PS- there is a section in one of the DAT manuals, probably the Panasonic SV-3700, which suggest making a test tape, and noting the error count on it, and storing it in a known location. From time to time, get out the test tape, and monitor the error count during playback to see if it's substantially higher than it was shortly after recording. When the error number increases, clean the heads. If dry cleaning won't lower it, then get a professional to do a wet cleaning, or do it yourself if you know how. I have not ever done this, but it makes sense. For myself, I don't use dry cleaners, and have consistantly low errors using the HHb, Quantegy and Sony Pro tapes, as well as Sony's DDS data tapes. When my decks get crudded up, I get them a pro-cleaning. I heartily recommend a warranty or service contract on a machine which will get a lot of use- it's the only way to go if you know you'll be wanting to keep your favorite gear in top-notch operating condition. HAPPY SUMMER TAPING SEASON EVERYONE! -tom From: Jason Neely Subject: Error Correction Reply-To: bondibox@bellsouth.net Date: Wed, 11 Jul 2001 04:44:31 -0400 I understand that when looking at error rates displayed on a D100/M1, that it is normal for it not to be all zero's. Posters here have remarked that 0-4 is normal for them. I ran the test and got great results, but only after I had run the cleaning tape (new D100, about10 hours use). When dirty it had varied readings, and one pop at 14, which can't be good. The crux of the matter, is I suppose there is error correction that goes on, explaining the tolerance for small errors. At what point do the errors become unrecoverable? And what do the units on the error counter mean? bits dropped? If I repeat the test over the same length of tape should I expect to see similar readings? All in all, using the error counter as a guide, at what point should I run the cleaning tape? I want to make sure that when I do a digital dump of a show that I get the whole thing clean. Using a Mac, and a Midiman DIO 2496 card, is there a way I can verify my DAT extraction? How about if I had a PC with the same card? tia -jas -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ------------------------------ From: George Carson Subject: Have Dylan, ISO More Dylan...
