Subject: Is anyone going to tape this Mike Ireland show? Date: Thu, 12 Jul 2001 10:19:58 -0500 Since I can't make the show myself, is there anyone out there who is planning on going to the show that is also going to try tape it? If so please drop me a line so we can try to work out a trade. Thanks Aaron Stoker Mike Ireland & Howard Iceberg live acoustic (solo and together) Tuesday, July 24th in the old room at Davey's Uptown Rambler's Club, 3402 Main, KCMO (816-753-1909). I can't imagine that I am the only one. Check out their website for more info: http://www.scoutisaband.com Anybody that might have live stuff from these guys, I would be interested, and in particular, I am also looking for some of the rare stuff musically that they have listed on their web page, live stuff, e.p.s, etc. Drop me an email if you happen to have anything from this band - Thanks! Matt ------------------------------ From: "Nick Georges" Subject: ISO: Oktava MC012s Date: Thu, 12 Jul 2001 11:41:39 -0400 Hi all... I'm looking for a pair of Oktava 012s, factory matched stereo pair. If your thinking about upgrading or letting yours loose...I'm your man. www.nickspicks.com ------------------------------ From: GaoBest@aol.com Subject: spot for Cafe du Nord & other SF questions/Raysvastbasement Date: Thu, 12 Jul 2001 12:05:56 EDT hey again guys, So at Jazz Butcher show last night at Cafe Du Nord, I taped it near the back, where there weren't people standing in front, plus I was tired so I was sitting down. Where is an "ideal" taping spot at that venue - where is the "drinks rail" or "below the mirror ball" equivalent there? I hate how the stage is so low. You can't see unless you're in the far front or far back, with no one in front... So we're taping Ivy there on Monday, I'd appreciate any suggestions on a good taping spot there, my mickeymouse set up is PCM-M1 and sonic studios, nothing expensive. And I only taped 7pm show (90 mins?) because I am opening up this week at work. Did anyone tape the 10pm show and how long was that one? Were 7pm ticket holders allowed to stay for the 10pm show (I assume yes since capacity was only 30%). I would like to think it was a different setlist. Also interested in the LA gig. I'm trying to get these for a friend, but am willing to do B/P in September or October after the chaos hath ended for me. Or I will refer any trade requests to my friend, since I'm not a true fan (I just love Glass Records and the Spaceman 3 connection). For other SF listmembers, does anyone have a SF Chronicle subscription, and if your front door is a bit far from the sidewalk (ie, stairs, porch, etc), do they throw the paper up the stairs or just leave it on the sidewalk? My Sf chronicle person just leaves it at the sidewalk by the foot of the stairs. Is it just me? Also does anyone tape or have tapes of Ray's Vast Basement (another SF band), and are they good live? I've not had a chance to see them yet, am I missing out? My friend's brother is in the band so I feel guilty for not taping them... Cheers Mike bwt (delivery in August since I'm going on business & New Order trips during the next 3 weeks) is B/P for Neil Diamond 1985 SF Cow Palace show from analog tapes (rec'd in 1996 from Mr. Rogers), a 90m dat would be necessary as the show is 170 minutes, decent quality, exact date is available. I am interested in hearing this show again, it's been at least 4 years since I played the tapes. If you use a Sony DG90 dat, then please "unpack" it before you send it. Sorry but no CDR for now. ------------------------------ From: "Charlie Miller" Subject: Claypool Taping Date: Thu, 12 Jul 2001 10:01:01 -0700 I want to add my story about Claypool's Taping policy. I had mics on the stage for a festival and Les told me that he didn't care where I put them. So I set my mics on Omni and placed them right in front of his monitor. He didn't seem to care much about this, which I thought was quite cool. You just got to be able to get your mics up there, without some "house" security freaking out. cm ------------------------------ From: Mark McHarg Subject: Re: Error Correction Date: Thu, 12 Jul 2001 18:17:34 +0100 > I understand that when looking at error rates displayed on a D100/M1, > that it is normal for it not to be all zero's. > > I suppose there is error correction that goes > on, explaining the tolerance for small errors. At what point do the > errors become unrecoverable? DAT has a block-corecing code which absolutely corrects up to some number of errors per block. This is standard for all DATs. After that, if there are too many errors, the D100 / M1 estimates what the missing samples might have been. While this is an improvement for listening purposes, it leads ot small errors getting into clones that no one notices because there isn't a huge BLATT of diginoise. > Using a Mac, and a Midiman DIO 2496 card, is > there a way I can verify my DAT extraction? > How about if I had a PC with the same card? read twice and compare. The tools I use (on PC) are gordon gidluck's "wavscript" to strip off the leading zeros then EAC to compare the resulting files. It's tedious at best. good luck - mark ------------------------------ From: Alex Prestin Subject: ISO: Trey Jones Beach tapers ticket? Date: Thu, 12 Jul 2001 13:31:20 -0400 (EDT) SSIA. Date: Thu, 12 Jul 2001 14:18:35 -0400 Hello and sorry if this is somewhat off topic. I currently have a Gateway laptop and am trying to put together a "cheap" but "accurate" CDR cloning setup. I was wondering if anyone has attempted to use the docking bays that are availabe for laptops. Then one I am considering has room for internal drives as well as 2 slots for PCI/ISA cards. I don't know nearly enough about these stations to know how data is transferred. If you have attempted this or have more information I would very much appreciate any input you can give to me. I intend to create a webpage with my thoughts and information if I can get it all together and make it work! One of the reasons I just got into DAT, was to avoid flipping mindiscs. If I am recording a 2.5 hour show, what length DAT tape do I need ? Do people tape at the lowest speed, e.g. get 2hours on a 120min tape, or do the get 4hours on a 120 tape ? What are the disadvantages to taping at longer playing speeds. Am I sacrificing a lot in quality ? I've heard it's not good to use 120min tapes too much, as they are thinner. I don't want to have to flip tapes, as I will be taping stealth. I think that most shows I go to will be under 3 hours. Thanks, Later, Frank Wong __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! Reply-to: lkelly@infi.net Date: Thu, 12 Jul 2001 15:30:21 -0400 Just curious if there are any tapers out there who might have taped Queensryche back in 1995 (or other years). I've seen the commonly traded shows, but I was looking for some of the harder to find dates (and perhaps some better quality shows). If anyone taped them back then, please get in touch. Date: Thu, 12 Jul 2001 15:28:59 -0400 Just trying to get any and all info/feedback about the Nomad Jukebox. I've been through the archives but still looking for a little more. First, for thoses of you that have recorded with it, how does it sound? Creative suggests that you can record about 16 hrs of uncompressed wav at 48kHz on it's 6gb hd, is this correct? How is the ADC? Is this at 8-bit quantization? Any info regarding the 1-10 gain settings would be nice too (db range, etc). This unit seems to good to be true at ~$270. Anyone record with this that dump it to CDR and wants to offer a B&P or trade? I'm trying to invent some way to set up a pair of mics to record a thunderstorm. I've got a pair of lapel-size condenser mics, on a makeshift T-bar attached to a Bogen light stand. Here's the challenge: come up with some way to keep the mics shielded from heavy downpouring rain, while not intefering with the natural sound of the situation. Raindrops falling directly on the mics obviously can't be good, and also produce loud popping noises upon impact. Heavy rain falling on the T-bar and light stand also creates noise that I'd like to avoid. Anything positioned above the mics to keep the rain off is going to make noise as the rain hits it. So far it seems like the best option is to dampen all the metal surfaces with some cloth or something, so that at least the noise from impact of the rain is minimized. And everything has to be rather secure, since some of these thunderstorms bring high winds and light hail as well as strong rain. Any ideas? Who's got a Star Trek force-field I can setup around the stand to keep the rain out?
