I've done it. "Results vary" is the rule of thumb. You get the stuff you ordered all of the time, but sometimes it takes a little while longer than other times. My KM-140s took about 3 weeks. My active cables took about 2 weeks. The guy sent me one 5-meter active and one 10-meter active, so another 10-meter took a week and a half. I've been very happy with the prices, and consider them worth the hassle of importing and the sometimes-slow service. Also, this wasn't stuff I needed right away. For that kinda stuff, I always go domestic and usually go next-day or 2-day air. Plus, M-G didn't carry a PSP-2. - A.P. Does anyone know how to get a digital output even when the analog outs > are being used on the Finalizer? The digital outs are always active on the tc Finalizer (yes, lower case is correct). This powerful box is menu driven and one must first decide which preset program one wishes to start with. Once that is selected, load that program by pressing the OK button. Now without going into a 45 page lesson on "how do I set it up?" as far as setting the digital out goes, one presses the Main Page button and then use the right arrow Block button to scroll the display to the OUT diagram. As the AES and coaxial out are always active, I can only assume that you need to activate the optical out. This is done by using the parameter key to highlight the OPTICAL block on the diagram. Use the scroll knob to change to TOS. Then if all else fails, read the manual. Then, once the rain has started and the builders have left for the day, I would set up a Blumlein about halfway between the floor and the ceiling or roof. Bear in mind that our only experiences of thunderstorms have the sound of raindrops falling on _something_, leaves, the roof, the car, your head... It is traffic and other 'city' sounds that mostly spoil nature recordings. Hope this helps. Date: Fri, 13 Jul 2001 12:21:53 -0500 You can use DDS 90 meter tapes, then run about 3:02-3:04 with the Sony DG90P. . . i have seen folks run the DDS 120's, but I think that it would be a little risky, The 60 Meter tapes are the thickest of the long-playing ones, the 90M and longer are thinner to allow the tape to fit in the shell. If your deck is not adjusted for the thin tape, it may not work perfectly, some decks handle the thin stuff better than others, and some can be adjusted by a technician to use the thin tapes. . . I would never use the longer playing speed, it is not the same 16-bit PCM recording, I believe the Sony uses a non-linear compression in which some of the bits are worth more than others. It sounds OK, but noticeably poorer than the best mode. I would only use it in an emergency, like if you just can't switch tapes and know the encore would only fit at the LP mode. . . but then you will have to take special care to trasfer the encore and it won't sound as good- Experiment, see what you like, it may be fine for your uses, everyone is different! (that's the one thing we all have in common!) If you're not bothered by a 3-hour time, use the Sony or possibly Maxell 90Meter tapes, you'll be fine. best of luck, hope this helps! -tom -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- If I am recording a 2.5 hour show, what length DAT tape do I need ? Do people tape at the lowest speed, e.g. get 2hours on a 120min tape, or do the get 4hours on a 120 tape ? What are the disadvantages to taping at longer playing speeds. Am I sacrificing a lot in quality ? I've heard it's not good to use 120min tapes too much, as they are thinner. I don't want to have to flip tapes, as I will be taping stealth. I think that most shows I go to will be under 3 hours. Date: Fri, 13 Jul 2001 11:59:31 -0700 Recorded my first show the other day. Doughty @ GAMH-SF. I was a little tentative about trying to show the house managers' the artist's "Oh, what the fuck, go ahead and tape the shows" web page I printed out, so I stayed in stealth mode. Upstairs against the back wall. So I got lots of audience and glassware noise through my CSBs :o) Probably not suitable for trading. Also had level problems in the beginning, and some really obnoxious mic connector noise (clipping) and one as-yet unexplained dropout. I was wondering how much post-production traders consider "acceptable"? Is compression always a no-no? How about knocking down the mild clipping during applause? And the hard-core clipping from the connector problems? I'm using CoolEdit 2000 at the moment, and am thinking about purchasing the cleanup and tweak (for limiting) plugins. I guess what I need to do is find somebody to B&P me some "known good" examples, both DAT and CD :o) thanks... -- ------------------------------ From: Len Moskowitz Subject: DPA Prices (was Re: musicians gear) Date: Fri, 13 Jul 2001 15:50:18 -0400 (EDT) "craig davis" wrote: > anyone have any experience buying gear from the German company musicians > gear? I play in church band and used my Tascam DAT rig to record our rehearsal. We have a gig in two weeks. I tell you there's no better way to pre - produce a show than this! It tells everything; Are the singers in synch, balanced and on time? Are the instruments balanced? And - "Hey I didn't know you were playing that there I've been so in tune to what I was playing!" Recording rehearsals is a great tool! So for all you tapers out there who've been taping live shows this may be something you could offer to local bands and their managers. If you don't know how to approach this scene and would like to tap into it then then let me know. I will do what I can to help you out! It has been suggested to me to be near the soundboard because that's where you will get the nice stereo sound. My thinking is that the recorder already records in stereo and also I think the closer I am to the PA stacks, the better. So, is it best to just stay back near the board, or, if you're at a venue where the PA stacks on the stage are kinda low to the ground, get up close to one of the stacks(like maybe 10 feet away or so)...? Just wonderin'. Thanks!
