Reply-to: gdavis@loop.com Date: Sat, 14 Jul 2001 13:46:45 -0700 >Any closer and my little SP mics would overload. That's why I recommend the CSB mics. You can go all the way up to the stacks (where the sound is the clearest and the audience noise the least), without fear of mic overload. --Gary ------------------------------ From: sec1968@ezl.com Subject: dat holder Date: Sat, 14 Jul 2001 16:05:54 -0500 Hi all. I haven't had a need for this yet, but in case I ever do. What i'm looking for, is something that would clamp on to my mic stand, that's built to hold a portable Sony M1 DAT recorder. Mainly it'd be for those times I don't have a table or something of that nature to rest my DAT on, which would keep from stretching the mic cords out as well. I'm sure plastic or metal would do the job. If you know of any links to check out, please drop me a line. Finally does anyone have a good recomendation for clamps....>> For my classical taping in churches and concert halls, I estimate that I use suspended mics more than 40% of the time. With a few lengths of ships rope, large carbine hooks, gaffer tape and imagination you will surprise yourself how often you can hang and manoeuvre mics to any preferred spot, even in locations which appear barren at first sight. The idea is to support the central mic assembly from two lengths of rope strung transversely to high attachment points near the side walls, the two mic cables being taped unobtrusively along one of the ropes. Attachment points can be hooks, beams, radiator pipes, light- or window fittings, upper gallery rails, pulpit paraphernalia etc. Throw the rope round the fixture and clip it back onto a knotted-looplet in itself via carbine hooks. The higher the fixing points w.r.t. the central mics, the less you have to tension the rope - it just hangs in a gentle parabola - so the less chance of the fixtures breaking off. For the squeamish, or those in litigation-happy societies , you can triangulate with extra rope segments - this giving a bonus of extra adjustability options. One quick way to get your rope around high objects like cathedral roof beams is to fix thin twine to a roll of gaffer tape and hurl that over the object. For the mic fixture, I use: - Short hollow chrome pipe (length 15 cm.; diameter between bicycle handlebar and vacuum cleaner pipe) - Piece of chain-link, to thread snugly through above pipe. Wrap the tape in gaffer tape, or buy chain with plasticized sleeving, to damp any ringing resonances. - Two large carbine hooks to terminate the chain, thus securing the pipe from sliding about. These hooks then attach to the ropes. End result is a horizontal pipe segment. - Manfrotto "Superclamp" - never leave home without one! - to c-clamp to the pipe - Manfrotto "Lite-Tite Swivel adaptor, hanging down from the Superclamp - Stereo bar, Jecklin Disk etc. attached to bottom of the Lite-Tite. A Lite-Tite is not essential since mic clamps can provide tilting, but it does allow excellent adjustment scope, in particular angling compensation when the ropes can't be strung symmetrically transverse. Also it provides a better weight balance: It is best to let the assembly rotate into a settled equilibrium position before setting mic tilts and final tightening of the clamp...in this way the mic tilt survives any subsequent rope-hoisting, or material deformations during long suspension periods. (I use low-stretch rope, breaking strain 1000 kg, with some nylon or polyester content? When you get it from nautical supply stores...have them cut it by burning with a flame so the scorched ends won't ever fray.) It's a nice feeling to have your mics "stealthed" out of the way, with no problems of vibration, theft or line-of-sight, before the public or performers troop in. The above ideas met my needs but will not port easily to other recording situations. Still, it may seed a few ideas...and reap a few neat tricks in return. I recently purchased a new Roland ua-30 and due to changes in my computer setup I no longer need the unit. In case you don't know about the roland ua-30 it is a self-powered USB converter. It can take line level, coax digital or optical digital and output to USB. It performs Analog->Digital (if necessary) and will not resample. Software included is Cool Edit Pro LE and something for the macintosh (sorry but I don't have a mac and the info is lost in my brain). This will work with windows 98, 2000 and Mac OS 9.0.4 or higher. IF you have more questions please feel free to email me. I bought this to record live shows to my laptop but I am not going to be able to do this (for monetary reasons not because the setup will not work). I would like to sell this new, not even out of the box yet roland ua-30 for 250 or best offer. This is considerably less than the major dat-heads retailers.
