The Casio has a mini digital input so from the spdif I used a coax barrel adapter to a stereo rca to mini. The PCM-M1 was using a Oade 7pin in/out digi cable. Any D10 ProII users have any suggestions? All cables are brand new,and seem to work since the Casio was getting a digi signal, but it was a copy prohibit. FYI for people going to see Hot Tuna: I just saw Hot Tuna do a couple of local shows and also have a friend who saw them a few days later in Oregon and all three times they openly and willingly allowed Sbd patches and the mix was excellent. They had an archivist travelling with them who was running a straight Sbd feed into a R-500 and also running an aud/Sbd matrix mix into a R-300 - the choice was yours. I don't remember his name but he was a very nice guy. ------------------------------ From: Dan Gale Subject: Fact or Fiction Date: Sun, 15 Jul 2001 10:33:20 -0700 I had the pleasure of seeing "Fact or Fiction" last night at Cafe Tomo, featuring Terry Haggarty and Martin Fiero among others - wow! What a show! Terry and guitarist Barney Doyle were laying down vicious guitar jams all night long, and the band also featured an excellent keyboardist named Arlan Schierbaum. Has anyone else seen these guys? I saw they are playing at a Sierras music fest next weekend but otherwise haven't really seen them around. They played for over three hours and it was an absolutely amazing show. We asked Terry before the show about patching into the Sbd and he said "absolutely - the more tapers the better". Their soundman, on the otherhand, was not as receptive, so check with the band rather then him. Unfortunately the Sbd mix on the tape doesn't do the show justice and I'm kicking myself for not bringing my Neumanns, but it was a last minute sort of show... If anyone else has seen/taped these guys, let me know as I'm interested in a copy. Lots to trade. ------------------------------ From: David Hardy Subject: Looking for Sony D7 or D8 Date: Sun, 15 Jul 2001 12:14:06 -0600 If anyone wants to sell their Sony D7 or D8 (in good condition), please email me at david@planetmind.net Thanks. -David ------------------------------ From: Tom McGee Subject: Re: how close to the PA stacks should you get? Date: Sun, 15 Jul 2001 14:44:50 -0400 -- If it's preamp input overload rather than microphone overload --- the adapter section of your local Radio Shack has a little stereo in-line volume control with a right angle 3.5mm plug and a 3.5mm jack that's a cheap and effective way to cut down on the signal from hot mics. I used one last weekend as a quick fix between Shure MX100 series cardioids and a TCD-D100. It did the job very well in lieu of a constant impedance pad (which would be the preferred attenuator). After setting levels, taping the control in place is a good idea. RS part # 42-2459 ($4.99) If it's microphone overload, electrets can accept a higher SPL by using a higher bias voltage. From: "Gary Davis" >Any closer and my little SP mics would overload. That's why I recommend the CSB mics. You can go all the way up to the stacks (where the sound is the clearest and the audience noise the least), without fear of mic overload. ------------------------------ From: "Steven Popkin" Subject: Re: Brainfreeze Mix CDRs Date: Sun, 15 Jul 2001 14:47:57 -0400 Subject: Brainfreeze Mix CDRs > Anyboby out there trade mix CDRs of stuff like Cut Chemist and DJ Shadow, " > Brainfreeze." ? The funny thing is that my age-old Philips CD player produces an = SP/DIF signal that the Zoltrix recognizes (after I threw together a = 75Ohm cable that is). Does anyone know how the Pioneer digital output is implemented? A = schematic would be great if anyone has one. Otherwise if anyone has got = the Pioneer to talk to a Zoltrix I'm sure they could help. Hope your weekend was nice. I have a few questions about externally powering my laptop for field recording. If you have more expertise in this and would like to help out please feel free to email me at kevin_hatton@hotmail.com or reply to the list. Also is there is a laptop recording mailing list or something like that? a few of the questions are: 1) my computer apparently (from the bottom sticker) requires 19v and 2.64 aH. Which is 50.16 watts if my understanding is correct. If I wanted this to run for about 5-6 hours then I would need approximately 250-300 watts from my battery back. Is this all correct? I know that there are some other factors in play here but is it all correct? 2) Can I hook several sealed lead acids in series to create higher voltages with the same aH. For example 3 6V 20aH batteries to create 18Va and 20aH which creates 360 watts. A little more than I wanted but is it all correct? 3) Do I need to find the 19V or can I get away with 18V (3x6V) or 20V (2x10V) or 24V (2x12V)? 4) Is there something easier than all this? thanks for the help KEV ps-www.sonicsense.com has a nice "computer recording" FAQ...not really the name but I can't quite think of the name right now...sorry marc _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ From: ben morrison Subject: For Sale... Source: MBHO's>MP-2>SBM-1>D100 (3rd row center!) All those in attendance know how headdy the wind was for this show, but my DAT has NO wind distortion and sounds really good. I taped FOB instead of from the tapers section because of this very reason. In return, managed to get a really killer mix from Les' and Skerik's monitors from this close up. I recently got ahold of a pair thats marked TR-50BMLXL on the box. Are these sensitive enough for audience stealth recording? They have an output level of -56db How about the quality?, What might they be comparable to? In the little brochure there are specs shown for two different models, a TR-50 with an impedence of 3000 and a TR-50PS with an impedence of 250. How do I determine which model this pair is? thanks Bob ------------------------------ From: manesh.chudasama@gecm.com Subject: SONY TCD-D3 battery life. Date: Mon, 16 Jul 2001 10:04:26 +0100 Guys, Can anybody tell me how to get more out of my SONY TCD-D3 batteries. I made a stealth recording yesterday of 'remember Shakti' at the Royal Festival Hall in the UK. The night was EXCEPTIONAL.....but the battery power wasn't.!! The first battery lasted all of 45 minutes....the second roughly the same...!! I was gutted.....as the night was very enjoyable and the recordings turned out REALLY well too. Could it be due to the fact that I used the light function a few many times just to the check the recording levels were OK...?? Or to do with the many pauses between tunings? can't think why else the batteries would be like this? Any advice / ideas would be greatly appreciated for future stealth recordings.. Date: Mon, 16 Jul 2001 09:01:12 -0700 I was at Guitar Center the other day buying cables, and in the case I saw what I now believe to be single-capsule (cardiod) Oktava MC12 mics for about $140. Remembering that I'm a newbie with a limited budget (at least until the damned stock market reanimates), would a pair of these be worthwhile? How can I power them for use with my M1? Should I bite the bullet (i.e. have patience) and order a matched pair (from The Sound Room?)? Also, opinions on the SabraSom shockmounts that The Sound Room is advertizing? Binaural is nice, but I wouldn't mind being able to move during the show :o) Thanks.... -- ------------------------------ From: "Wayne D. Hoxsie Jr." Subject: Re: Oktava mics (for a newbie)? I got a pair from GC a few months back and I'm very satisfied with them. I went with the $199 3 capsule kits. I was lucky in that the local GC had a Neumann KM-184 (used trade) in their cabinet, and a very patient salesman that wasn't too busy that day. He let me hook up the Neumann and the Oktava's in various configurations and do some rudimentary tests with both mics and I was pleasantly surprised. With our limited testing neither I nor the salesman could tell a difference between the two. Once I'd decided to buy, he was nice enough to pull his entire stock from the back and let me pick and choose capsules that I liked and we did some rudimentary capsule matching as well. For this, we just plugged the mics up XY (I brought my Shure A27M) in front of a boom-box speaker and checked the levels on a soundboard mixer with good gradient level meters. In retrospect, I would have liked to have burned a CD with pink-noise, or even just some sin waves at various frequencies, but I think I got a good enough capsule match for the recording I do. I got a Denecke PS-2 phantom supply and I like this box alot. Very low noise, full 48V from a 9 volt battery, 5+ hours with alkalines, and there is enough juice in the capacitors that you can swap a battery when the "low" light comes on and not interrupt the signal (I only do this after the light comes on and a break in the music comes around. I imagine that the voltage drops a bit from 48V so you don't want to swap at full SPL). Get some good windscreens if you're doing outdoor recording. These mics seem pretty sensitive to wind and it comes out sounding like thunder. I picked up some DPA DA0020 19mm screens, but they are only good to about 15mph winds or so. In retrospect, I should have gotten a bit thicker screens. If you have broadband and want to download a sample SHN, let me know. -- Wayne D.
