My problem was that the HHb was not recognizing the > start id's via AES/EBU connection. AES3-1968 Recommended Practice does not allow for the inclusion of start ID's in the data stream. The newer version AES3-199X does optionally, I believe. It is therefore implemented at the whim of the component manufacturer. Don't assume that any particular manufacturer is better than another at correctly implementing AES/EBU-format I/O's To perform quantitative assessments of a suspect interface, you'll need reliable test equipment for analyzing timing accuracies of sync clocks, for example, and channel status information. -- Regards, Klay Anderson, D.A.,Q.B.E. Does anyone know of any links that discuss this technology in detail? It seems to me that it would be impossible to add pops and clicks to a copied CD yet have the original play fine on standard equipment. How does this affect say S/PDIF output from CD players? It doesn't really bother me at all as I only own about 3 or 4 commercial releases (most of my music is live trades from the good folks of the taper community), but when they start sneaking this stuff in, its bound to eventually affect us tapers somehow when doing legitimate copying. -- Wayne D. Date: Thu, 19 Jul 2001 14:09:06 -0400 I apologize if this is coming up twice - I'm having some trouble posting from work... Finally time to bite the bullet and replace my dying P133. Sad times indeed as I have done most of my DAT trading over the last 5-8 years or so with it as my sidekick. The good news is, of course, the ability to get a machine that can enable the conversion of my collection to CDR (hate running the D7 in the car - CDs are the best option, IMO). Long story short: Dell offers the option of either the SoundBlaster Live Value or the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz DSP for their new machines. What are the pros and cons for these? I'm leaning toward the TB, but am unsure of the digi-in - is it a miniplug or an RCA? Both cards resample on the fly, but the TB has gotten a lot of rave reviews so I'm wondering: Do any of you use the Santa Cruz card and if so, how do you like/hate it? Thanks. I was taping a couple of Toronto jazz fest shows and at one, there was a chain that came out of a DAP1 that included another DAp1, a D7 or D8, and a D100 and I was at the end and got a no input signal. We changed things around many times and someone would always get a no input signal. I think all the portables had Oade Cables. I just went Analog instead and everyone got a patch. At another show, I came out of another M1 that came out of a DAP1 that we split the signal. Set 1 worked fine, but set 2, I think I started my deck before him and no matter what, I got a no input signal. Is it maybe because I started my deck before the others? Any input would be greatly appreciated. The Central Park SCI show is GA, so you'll be able to tape. Phish Tickets By Mail shut me out for the first time in a bit... Since I got this ticket for free, I'd be more than happy to trade my Trey Lawn Seat AND the SCI tic for 1 Trey Taper's ticket. I can meet you at the Summerstage Will-Call... Please Do Not Respond unless you have a Trey Taper ticket to trade... I can find plenty of people to give this to, I just thought I'd see if I could do some more taping this summer before going that route. Thanks and peace! If you can deal with the rather low S/N ratio, you'll find some links and the occasional insightful/knowledgeable post here: http://slashdot.org/articles/01/07/19/007240.shtml BTW, if y'all haven't heard about the Russian programmer arrested by the FBI on Monday in Las Vegas on allegations by Adobe that he violated the DCMA by creating a program to allow the conversion of Adobe's eBook-formatted documents to other formats...have a look here: http://www.eff.org/IP/DMCA/US_v_Sklyarov/20010717_eff_sklyarov_pr.html I think this case is very relevant to the above copy-protection topic, because I think it's an exact analogue (pun not-really intended) of copying audio CDs to other media/formats. I would not be at all surprised if the RIAA/record companies/Macrovision try tactics like these if somebody develops workarounds for their technology. ------------------------------ From: Frank Wong Subject: SOLUTION - M1 Optical Cable Problem Date: Thu, 19 Jul 2001 22:07:29 -0700 (PDT) Thanks to Gary Davis for the solution to my problem. The DAT I was trying to dump to CDR was recorded at 48 KHz, so not compatible with my consumer CDR recorders. I tried another DAT recorded at 44.1Khz, and it worked fine. There was nothing wrong with the optical cable. Also Gary told me the "trick" to finding out what frequency the DAT is recorded at, is to press play button again, while the tape is playing. The fact I was getting a red light at the end of the optical cable, is probably a sign that the cable was fine. So, I guess if you are trading DATs with the end goal of dumping to CDR, you need to make sure that the clone DAT is at 44.1 KHz. HELLO????????........ Date: Fri, 20 Jul 2001 08:23:17 -0700 Jason Franklin asked: >Does King Crimson currently allow recording? Yeah, SURE they allow taping. Bring out your Schoeps, Neumanns, AKGs, or even the (Bill Bruford) Earthworks ;), and anything else so obvious and Mr. Fripp himself will gladly take your tape at the end of the show. That is, if you can get your rig by the security and the NO CAMERAS, RECORDING, SMOKING, COUGHING, LAUGHING, WHISPERING, BREATHING, or anything else showing a big resounding "NO!" [Note the hints of sarcasm in here...] DUDE, OF COURSE THEY DON'T ALLOW TAPING!!! Not currently, not ever. Is a bear catholic? Does a pope **it in the woods? Was Jimi Hendrix white??? Sorry, all I'm saying is whenever people have a question of any band on their taping policies, don't waste bandwidth on DAT-Heads asking. Most of the bands in question are on Seth's "Bands That Allow/Don't Allow Taping" list. You can link there from the DAT-Heads homepage. It's that simple!!! ********************* But seriously, if you wish to tape KC, do it STEALTH!!! And don't get in a place where Fripp can glare at you with those steely, blue Bournemouth-Kent eyes. He tells security to look around for people looking down at their levels when the lights go out or other suspicious activity. So YES, tape - but stealth wisely!!! And another thing you can do while stealthing is JUST LISTEN!!! That by any means is the true essence of a KC show. Set your levels ONCE (even if they're a little low) and don't look at them the rest of the show - pending how close you are to the stage. I would get back in the middle somewhere, away from the Cheshire Cat grin of the mysterious, yet intriguing Robert Fripp, as he basks in the shadows. AND PREPARE TO GET "FRIPP-NOTIZED!!!!!" :) Good luck if you're going to the show! Hope I wasn't too prudish earlier. Just everybody please read the "Bands That Do/Don't Allow Taping" list before placing your posts.
