What's Date: Tue, 24 Jul 2001 16:20:20 -0600 Hello, As a former owner of a ZA2, I got used to the little warning message after transferring a DAT to my HD, "There were buffer underruns in your recording at XX.XXseconds that may cause audible glitches in your recording." I became just as familiar with the testimonials from DATheads of how this is THE card for DAT>PC, and that all others resample. (The ZA2 had a very cool realtime resampling window that said "high quality 32K>44.1K sample rate conversion in progress" or something. I miss that.) Finally I parted with my ZA2, practically booting it out the door in frustration, and bought a DeltaDio 2496 which is PCI-slot based (natch) and there was an eerie silence where once I knew when my recording was being corrupted in some way. (You mean there's NEVER a buffer underrun?) So now I live knowing that there is probably some sort of weirdness happening, but I can't hear it.... What exactly is this resampling that some cards do, and others do not? Realizing that this is probably in an FAQ or two, where can I be pointed to this info? Date: Tue, 24 Jul 2001 10:25:14 -0400 Common courtesy. Let's talk about it. I groveled for a 2001 DMB show from Buffalo, for a friend. I made a trade(sent mine first). He sent his and it skipped in places, both CDR's, 33 TIMES IN ONE SONG! I wrote back, he agreed that if it was his fault that he would replace them, if it was my fault somehow, he would send back my show. Well I haven't heard back from MARTY HANLON in a week and a half and he is ignoring my emails. His skips in the CDR's were very suspicious. One of them jumped to a different part in the song. The back of one had residue, which I told him about. He told me to try to clean it. Well, if it was on there before he burned the CDR, it wouldn't do any good. This is the DMB after all. If anyone has any info on Marty please write me. You give tape trading a bad name. MARTY we will not be ignored. My friend is on a mission to find you(you don't live too far away). My advice is to send those CDR's before we are face to face, before it's too late. See you soon Marty! Are you kidding me ?? I don't know Marty nor do I care too but, Dude it's only a trade. I mean seriously your posting a threat to this guy in front of millions of folks, forever saved in the archives. No wonder DMB has such a bad name in the jam world, get a clue it's only $3.00 you lost. I guess this isn't so much directed to you as it is this list in general. Folks chill out, everytime I see a bad trader alert my skin crawls. People have other lives, tapes get broken, discs get lost, relax it's not the end of the world. Be happy you get a copy of the show or how about you go out & buy your own rig, get to EVERY single show & have all the tapes you need. This is ridiculous, you will get the show from someone if you need it but maybee you should wait a little longer than a week before you get your lynch mob together. I'd offer you a show off my list but I wouldn't want you & your buddy trying to find me. To everyone else I apologize for the rant & offer WSP 7/14/01 off my rig, FOB/DFC 483>248>AD500e to three folks DAT only B&P style. They're called MDData2 discs and they're only used in super-expensive camcorders that are like $2000. I think the audio is still ATRAC, but I don't remember for sure. I would pay $600 for a portable recorder that would record uncompressed 16/44.1 audio on this disc, even though it would only be 74/80 minutes! For club use (where drunken people will trip over the legs) and fitting into tight theatre seats its advisable to cut the legs down and this will limit you to about 7' in height. Reply-to: gdavis@loop.com Date: Wed, 25 Jul 2001 01:08:24 -0700 I didn't want to bother Dat-Heads with this, but I've gotten this new email virus about 10 times in the last few days, so, a warning... The message has various subjects, but the text reads something like "I'm sending you this file to seek your advise." There's an attached file with type unknown. If you receive a message like this, simply delete it without clicking on the file, and no harm is done. Now, a broader warning: be very careful opening files you receive in email, even from someone you know. That person's computer could be infected, causing it to send out a virus that looks like a personal message. Fortunately, no one has thought yet to send the message "Here is my list of Phish soundboards, let's trade!" But just in case they do... Don't open an attachment, especially if the type is unknown or unknown to you, unless you are actually expecting the attachment. If you get an attachment from someone you know, but you're not expecting it, simply hit reply and say "Did you mean to send me this attachment? What is it?" And if you get a personal reply, it will probably be "Thank god you wrote!! That is the virus that's infecting my computer." Alternatively, you can always save the attachment to your hard disk *without* opening it and try to figure out what it is. If it's a .jpg or .gif picture or a .txt file, it can't cause any harm to your computer. But beware: the "Love" virus had an extention of .JPG.vbs. "VBS" was the actual extension, but people saw the "JPG" and thought it was safe. And unfortunately, most Microsoft programs such as Word and Excel are so "powerful" that their files can contain viruses, so, a .doc file for Word or .xls for Excel are NOT safe. Try to confirm what's in such a file before you open it, or open it with a viewer such as Quick View Plus instead of Word, which will let you view the file without actually executing any instructions in it. Sorry again for the lack of DAT content, but I thought this information was worth passing along. Once again, it's safe to open a message with a virus (in general), but NOT safe to click on the attachment which contains the actual virus. --Gary ------------------------------ From: "Gary Davis" Subject: More on the new virus Reply-to: gdavis@loop.com Date: Wed, 25 Jul 2001 01:32:16 -0700 Other text which may be in the message, trying to persuade you to open the file: This is the file with the information that you ask for I send you this file in order to have your advice I hope you can help me with this file that I send I hope you like the file that I sendo you And, this virus can also come to you in Spanish! I tried to save it in order to analyse it (I run linux and infection is not an issue), but none of them would decode properly. They had data errors in the MIME base64 encoding. I'm not sure if maybe this could be a "feature" of the virus in that it uses this "error" to circumvent or subvert the OS into activating the virus, but without even being able to detach it from the email, I could not analyse it further.
