I noticed that the attachment had the extension .bat, .com or .pif
which in Windows correspond to "shortcut" files that contain MS-DOS
commands.
The truly annoying part of this is that typical virus scanning
programs most likely won't catch these programs, as they are really
just text files... but when you save them to your hard drive and
double click on them, they could do ANYTHING that you would be allowed
to do on your own computer -- like reformat your hard drive.
Gary, thanks for the informative post. Folks, in general, you gotta
be REALLY careful when considering opening attachments from other
people.
My company (Condom Country www.condom.com) doesn't allow incoming
attachments *at all* because of these kinds of issues.

I have one. works fine, when it doesn't go crazy! It like to add loud
squeals between songs(or lulls in the music). And also when it does this it
causes small clicks in the left channel. However 70-80% of the time it
works fine, when it doesn't I rewind the tape and transfer again, it almost
never fails twice in a row.
I have used it with different decks and different cables, switched slots,
closing all other programs, spent a few hours on the phone with tech support
too. Nothing seems to cure it.
In short I would buy a midiman if I had to buy another.

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone had any good input on this soundcard
(Audiowerk 2). Is it good for transferring DAT>PC, etc.? Any opinions
would be greatly appreciatted.

Greetings all,
I just want to say I love my ZA2 (ISA and all). I did try to find a
comparable PCI card when I upgrade my main system, but did not find any that
compared to ZA2. So, now I dedicate my antiquated 166MMX to DAT>ZA2
transfers. If anyone wants to email me off list to discuss problems &
solutions related to ZA2, I'd happy to share my experience.
Peace,
Vince

Subject: Advice on Zefiro Inbox aka Denecke DCode AD20
Date: Wed, 25 Jul 2001 15:05:51 -0400
Hello all.
I'm just getting off the ground as a jam-world taper. I'm also new to this
list and would really appreciate any answers to a few questions about
preamps and such...
To those familiar with the Zefiro Inbox (Denecke AD20), before (and if)I
decide to buy one, I'd like to know a few things:
1) How does it sound compared to a D8's (or comparable deck) onboard preamp?
2) Is it worth the $325 the Denecke website asks for it?
3) Once I have the cash to upgrade to an MP-2, should I bother buying a
SBM-1 (the AD1000 is too rich for me), or will the Inbox function well as an
A/D converter between the MP-2 and the D8?
4) If I go MP-2>Inbox>D8 (using the Inbox as an A/D), will the really
high-quality output from the MP-2 be downgraded by going thru the cheaper
Inbox, or will the sound remain as good as if coming straight from the MP-2?
I know 4mm data tapes are bad for decks, but are the 4mm data head-cleaners
safe? Is there any difference between a DAT head-cleaner and a 4mm Data
head-cleaner?
What are the pros/cons of S/PDIF versus Toslink optical? Price?
Compatibility? Flexibility? Sound quality?
Thanks in advance for helping me get my feet wet. Soon I hope to be
siteopping an etree server out of my school (tech teamers get increased
access to the T1), and every question answered gets me one step closer to
this goal.

One of the main reasons I switched from MD to DAT was recording time.
My friend who teaches English in Japan tells me that these MDs are not just
for camcorders anymore, there are also super long MDs for audio now too.
Can anyone confirm? I am still glad I made the switch though. Those new
MDs must be super compressed.
Eric
The thing is, they already have MD's that hold 640mb. They're called
MDData2discs and they're only used in super-expensive camcorders that are
like $2000.
I think the audio is still ATRAC, but I don't remember for sure. I would
pay$600 for a portable recorder that would record uncompressed 16/44.1 audio
on this disc, even though it would only be 74/80 minutes! (Of course, a 3gb
version at 24/192 would be much better :))

Not certain I'll sell it yet. I'll be asking $1500 if I do. Any

First let me say that I have traded w/ Joe Arnold before and it went off
just fine.
I have not traded w/ Carl.
I see both sides of the coin. Patience should always be employed w/ trades.
But when/where does a person draw the line?
I'd say that after a month of not getting your stuff to send a nice note and
ask if the person received your trade materials. Then wait for a reply. If
no reply, then resend the same message in a forwarding fashion. Once again
giving the benefit of the doubt, asking the person if they received your
first email. Maybe they did not. Remember to be patient, until that is no
longer an option.
A month is too darn long IMHO, but you never know what the problem could be
if you don't know the person or you never traded w/ them before.
My motto is "Once is not always". If you are not sure, start small and don't
pick anything that you need quick.
Some folks are just slow. I can think of a fellow out on the West coast that
fits the bill, but on the other hand he's pretty darn cool and he always
comes through, just not like Speedy Gonsales.
We are totally on the honor system here. This means trust comes first.
I totally understand Carl's point that Joe is blowing things out of
proportion. On the other hand, I DO understand Joe's desire for revenge. If
a trade is setup via DAT-Heads and it ends up in a bad trader situation,
that reflects on our list. I think that's why people post them. They want
the rest of us to know and to beware because someone on this list betrayed
their trust. If it happened to them it could happen to you.
I have posted about this before. My thought is just keep it brief.
Now, the virus warning topic. It's nice that Gary was thinking of us, but
come on man! If you are gonna post your sales pitches and post over and over
again... kick something down for the bandwidth. Offer a B&P for crying out
loud.
It seems like this list is kinda veering off path at times. It's up to us to
stay on track.
Be a good trader!
peace & moe.

I got a great recording of Radiohead, at their concert last month at
Shoreline Amphitheater. Now, I once again need my hand held. ;)
Much to my dismay, my current soundcard does not have any digital i/o. I
have a Sony TCD-D3, with the optional 7-pin to Optical/RCA digital i/o
thingy. Does that make sense? I'm not sure what that thing is called, but
when connected to my DAT, it gives me both optical and RCA digital ins and
outs.
So, my question to the all-knowing DAT-Heads is: What soundcard should I
buy to get the highest quality transfer from my D3? I'm sure there are many
choices, but how about we break them down into price range? Best cheap one
($50-175)? Best Mid-low one ($175-250)? Best Mid-high one ($250-375)?
Best high end one ($375-up)?
I'm sure my next question will be "what software should I use?", so if you
want to jump the gun and answer that one too, I would be much obliged.
Thanks again for all your help!

Hi all. This may be OT, but important for those that convert their DAT shows to cdr. Does
anyone know of a virus software that DOES NOT poll the HD? Reason I ask, I use SoundForge 4.0 for
any editing, and when I used McAfee, it would stop recording to the HD because it was polling it.
I'm not a computer techie, so I have no idea what that exactly means. But since I just nuked my
system and started from scratch, i'll need some good virus software. Any good suggestions are
appreciated. Thanks.
