DAT-heads Digest #979, Volume #5 Wed, 25 Jul 01 23:50:00 EDT Contents: Re: : ZA2, Delta Dio, Zoltrix Nightingale, Turtle Beach.... What's ("Jamie Lutch") FS:trey tix (matt shudtz) CLOSED: B&P Frog Brig 7/18/01 Atl OFFER ("Brian Kelley") ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Jamie Lutch" Subject: Re: : ZA2, Delta Dio, Zoltrix Nightingale, Turtle Beach.... What's Date: Wed, 25 Jul 2001 21:24:35 -0700 I ran a za2 for 3 years with only one or two buffer underruns the whole time. The achilles heel of the card is the way it interacts with other hardware (esp. vga drivers). This is the main problem to overcome, and once it is, the za2 performs flawlessly. The resampling on the za2, (or other high end sound cards) is done with a dedicated chip optimized for accurate resampling, when required. The resampling that the cheaper cards do (turtle beach montego II and any cheap (say $100)card that can convert 48>44 in hardware) is that a cost optimized ( i.e. cheap) chip resamples ALL data coming in, including that which is already at 44.1. so we have three classes of cards: 1) high end cards that have a dedicated optimized chip to resample when necessary: ZA2, Ego Sys Waveterminal 2496, Ego Sys U2A (good) 2) low end card that dont, cant , and wont resample: Delta Dio 2448, Zoltrix Nightingale (good, tho this requires resampling be done in software (which is actually better, but can take a long time on a slow computer) 3) low end cards that resample everything turtle beach montego II, any soundblaster card. cheap no-name soundcards (unsuitable) hope this helps, jamie > > Hello, > As a former owner of a ZA2, I got used to the little warning message after > transferring a DAT to my HD, "There were buffer underruns in your recording > at XX.XXseconds that may cause audible glitches in your recording." They're called MDData2 discs and they're only used in super-expensive camcorders that are like $2000. I think the audio is still ATRAC, but I don't remember for sure. I would pay $600 for a portable recorder that would record uncompressed 16/44.1 audio on this disc, even though it would only be 74/80 minutes!
