I sent a DAT tape to a British fellow (I don't recall his name or address, as I lost it when I needed to re-install my operating system) to be made into CD-R digitally and sent back to me. The tape had on it the Boy George concert performance of 12/31/2000 in Miami Beach and it was a 90m Sony DDS tape. I was going to mail him the shipping costs to send it back, as I forgot to include that in the package I sent with my tape in it, and now I haven't his address to do so. My problem is that I have not yet received the tape and CD-R(s) back yet, and I'm worried. I got in touch with him through DAT Heads and I would appreciate it if he would please contact me at mjackso5@tampabay.rr.com to let me know what I need to do to get him to send the CD-R and my tape back. Thanks. - Matt ------------------------------ From: "Dave Stephens" Subject: iso dmic-20 Date: Fri, 27 Jul 2001 19:49:40 -0400 hey all, just wondering if any digester readers would have a dmic in good working condition that might be for sale. please reply privately. thanx dave ------------------------------ From: "Degrado, Rob" Subject: Re: Best Software for DAT>PC Date: Fri, 27 Jul 2001 16:53:31 -0700 "I was wondering if anyone could make a good recommendation as to software for going DAT>PC. Sound Forge and Red Roaster both seem good but they are both real expensive? Any suggestions." ============================================ Here's a suggestion for anyone (like me) who got a free Soundforge 4.5 XP disc bundled when they purchased a Zeifro ZA2 a long time ago: I called Sonic Foundry when 5.0 was released to register/upgrade from the old XP and they told me they had a "special going on" and let me upgrade it to the full-blown 5.0 version for $99.00! This was a few months ago but still maybe worth the effort to save a few hundred bucks. I use SF 5.0 to transfer all my DATs to PC and it works flawlessly and reliably. l8r -Rob. ------------------------------ From: "Neil Sturtevant" Subject: the future of recording Date: Fri, 27 Jul 2001 16:57:03 -0700 http://www.zaxcom.com/audio/deva.shtml i wish i could afford it... tough to stealth with, but i like the two seperate mix ability also looking for any live clash or esp joe strummer (who is on tour right now) BWT: 1-18-01 los lobos 90m DAT ONLY, awesome rendition of Neil Young's "down by the river" ; sennheiserK3U/ME40>hhb, 30' from stage, dfc. include opening act. Date: Fri, 27 Jul 2001 17:08:46 -0700 Has anyone had troubles using 90-metre tapes in an M1? I just bought this rig a little over a month ago, and have been using a mixture of various size Quantegy tapes (16, 94, 124 mins) and Imation 90-metre DDS-III tapes. Yesterday, while trying to cue up a tape for playback to transfer to hard disk, about three inches of the 90-metre tape wrinkled and actually caused the deck to stop playing if I started it in that section; it would play through, though, with the expected complete jumble of sound. Am I just taunting machine-death here? Even with a design as new as the M1, am I sure to kill it while trying to use 90-meter tapes? I think the direct cause was trying to rock back and forth while playing...whatever that function is called.... Thanks.... ------------------------------ From: Michael Hackett Subject: Re: Audiowerk II Date: Fri, 27 Jul 2001 21:11:26 -0500 Scott C. Seems to do perfect = > digital transfers for me with no problems > > maybe it likes macs better :) Well, I've never had these particular symptoms (although using the included WaveBurner software for transferring always resulted in periodic static all over the recording), but there is a known problem with the AW2 that I did run into a lot. It has an odd synchronization problem where it sometimes gets locked onto an S/PDIF feed half a sample off -- that is, the left channel word becomes the right channel word, and the right channel value becomes the =next= sample's left channel word. It took a while to get through, but Emagic did acknowledge the problem and offered a work-around: toggling your software's input selector between the digital and analog inputs and back again seems to force it lock on correctly. It's workable, but for this one reason, I would not recommend this card unless you want to use its A/D or D/A converters, which are supposed to be quite good. FWIW, the Audiowerk was my second attempt, after a largely unsuccessful stint with a Delta DiO 2496 on my Mac. If I were to try again, I would have gone with Digi's Audiomedia III and ProTools LE software, and now I might try one of RME's 24/96 cards. -- Michael ------------------------------ From: Michael Hackett Subject: Re: MAC software recommendation Date: Fri, 27 Jul 2001 21:21:02 -0500 Jonathan Seff wrote: > >From: Eliot Byron > > >i will be running it on a MAC G4 400mhz 386 RAM > > >i am looking for software > >mainly for importing my thousands of live dat tapes > >so i can put them in cd (i have a firewire burner) > > I use Peak for recording to disk and tracking, and it's great. Peak is certainly very useful, but if you want to do it a little cheaper (Peak is about $350), you could use a freeware program called Coaster that I've used with good results for the transfer portion. Then use Digidesign's free version of ProTools LE to edit and set regions, which Jam will recognize as track markers. Or go straight to WaveBurner for editing, processing, and burning. Very nice program! -- Michael ------------------------------ From: roarke Subject: ZA2 for Sale Date: Fri, 27 Jul 2001 18:02:41 -0700 Hi folks, just noting again that I have a ZA2 for sale. I've been pleased with it etc., but I'm in graduate school right now and really need to unload some gear. I have the original, box, manuals, etc. Any, I promise, offer will be considered as the semester is starting soon. Thanks. Adam ------------------------------ From: "Gary Davis" Subject: 8-disc SVCD set of latest NASA mission Reply-to: gdavis@loop.com Date: Fri, 27 Jul 2001 19:16:42 -0700 And now for something completely different. I have just completed a lovely 8-CD set of the latest NASA space mission: to install a new airlock on Space Station Alpha. Yes, this is a multi-billion dollar production which I have captured on Super Video CD discs, ie, regular CDR discs which hold 40 minutes of medium-quality MPEG-2 video. This isn't just random shots of space but a complete story of the latest space mission. A reality TV mini-series that's really out-of- this-world, and commercial free! The beauty of SVCD discs is that you can tree them just like audio CDs, and just like audio CDs, there is no generation loss. Each copy is exactly the same as the original. These discs have a PC-Autorun feature so you can play them on a Windows-type PC just by clicking on the disc icon. You can also play them on Chinese-built DVD players such as all Apex models ($97 this week at K-Mart) and the Pioneer 525,535, etc. They will *not* play on most Japanese DVD players such as Sony, JVC, Panasonic, etc. You can copy them with EZCDcreator 4.0 or higher (using the EZCD Copier program), or Nero 4.0 or higher. CDRWIN currently cannot copy video CDs (or any other multi-session disc). I think you can play and copy them on a Mac or Linux, but sorry, I don't know how. So... if you think this sounds interesting, and you're willing to make a few sets for other people, email me and we'll try to work out an informal tree. Use a subject of: NASA BRANCH n - where "n" is the number of sets you are willing to make or NASA LEAF - due to the nature of this tree, I'll ask that most people sign up as Branches unless you absolutely can't make copies. email to: gdavis@loop.com If you'd like to just see one disc, instead of the whole set, email me with a subject of: NASA ONE BTW, these discs were made possible with the DataVideo VDR-3000, a standalone SVCD recorder which works quite a bit better than the Amoisonic. Among other things, when you use CDRW discs, you can "erase last track." So, you can put down the same track over and over till you get it right :-) Another new piece of earth-bound technology that helped: the new TiVo 2.0 software version, that lets you save a video program on its internal hard disk even after it's already started! So, as I watch the NasaTV satellite feed 20 hours a day, if something cool came along (such as a guided tour of the new Airlock), I was able to save it on the TiVo even after it had already happened! And then to the SVCD's in a coordinated manner. Just to give you an idea, here are the primary subjects of the eight discs: 1. Launch - a blinding light in the dead of night - multiple views of course! 2. Rendezvous - the approach to Space Station Alpha and the first meeting between the Station crew and other humans in 3 months. 3. Space Walk #1 4. Floating Interview Disc 5. Space Walk #2 6. Opening Quest: the first space walk though the new Quest Airlock module 7. Coming Home 8. From Landing to Launch: recycling the space shuttle (courtesy CNN) And there's also plenty of Earth views, orbital sunsets, and of course - Nasa's unique selection of daily wake-up music! --Gary ------------------------------ From: Zzutak@aol.com Subject: DATs for CDrs trading ratio? Date: Sat, 28 Jul 2001 00:19:44 EDT Hello friends, I have a question I hope many of you will weigh in on.... enough to get a statistical sampling together. What's an equitable ratio when trading DATs for CDrs? Is there a commonly accepted rule of thumb out there that I'm unaware of? Thanks in advance! Nothing seems to cure it. You don't mention a platform, but I have used one on a Mac for several years without any of those problems. It's best by far to use it with Waveburner with extensions off, and don't ever try to mix material with different sampling rates in the same document, even after choosing the appropriate input rate. I edit the resulting SD2 file in Peak LE, but diginoise spikes can occur when the edited file in Waveburner again to accomplish DAO burning, but these can be exorcised in Peak again--- and strangely enough they don't re-appear. I swapped mine out last night for some fresh ones, (Eveready e2 photo lithium) before taping Spoon because even though the display showed full (three bars), on one occasion where I tried to shuttle forward from the beginning of the tape it unloaded and opened instead, and I thought it was giving me other troubles as well. ----clip----- >> Battery indicator is calibrated for the battery type: alkaline for D7/8 and NiMH for D100/M1. As such, the low battery indication is not going to work with L91 AA lithium. Experience seems to indicate L91 will power an M1 deck solid for about 5 hours regardless of usage, but will give up to 8 hours if these cells are run continuously. If you stop using the cells and especially if you give them an overnight rest period, you will only get 5 hours running time MAX. When L91 capacity is used up, the battery voltage and current may drop out very quickly leaving little or no LOW battery indicator warning.
