In return I would like 2 similarly branded/priced 80 min. cdr's. Please no pny/kensiko/megapack of 100cd's for $20 brands... The show was taped by a friend of mine with csb>M1 and transferred to cd via a soundcard. I would give the recording about a b- or so, its definitely one for the petty fans, not the casual listener. first person who's intersted gets it. thanks, Eric ==================================================== NetZero Platinum Sign Up Today - Only $9.95 per month! http://my.netzero.net/s/signup?r=platinum&refcd=PT97 ------------------------------ From: eric nelson Subject: ??? help with Jane's Addiction dates - old shows Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2001 17:09:10 -0400 I have 2 jane's addiction shows with the same setlist and listening has proved them to be the same show. my dilemma is that they are labelled 2 different dates and venues. 1. 10.15.87 Dallas, Tx. s>?>d>c 2. 10.23.86 Pyramid Club Los Angeles s>?>d>c Does anyone know the official word as to which show is which? Thanks for the b/w. -John ------------------------------ From: Brendan Hoar Subject: Not quite Newbie Questions from not quite a newbie (wind noise, head Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2001 19:36:03 -0400 (EDT) Hello DAT-HEADS! It's been about 4 years since I've posted to the list, so bear with me if I commit a breach of decorum or ettiquite. Do tell me, though. Feel free to point me to a source of information instead of giving a direct answer if you feel that is best. I appreciate the help. Section I - wind noise: My first outing with a new set of Len's stealth cardiods this past weekend at Falcon Ridge was excellent, except for the wind noise issue. I had neglected to do my research before leaving and hadn't known that cardiods are, by nature, much much more wind sensitive than the omnis/binaurals. I sent Len some questions about the heavy duty windscreens. However, I'd like to ask a general question: in emergency situations, what common items might best be used for wind screen purposes without coloring or muffling to sound too badly? It was rumored that one of the other tapes caught off-guard by the afternoon winds had resorted to using tube socks... I tried adding a scarf to my mic stand contraption (See below), but that didn't help too much. I did end up with a quite fetching, if a bit crunchy, silk scarf. Section II - studio DATs: I recently acquired, via ebay, a Sony PCM-R500 and a Panasonic SV-3800. No manuals, no infrared remotes. 1) What are the rated head lives of the heads in each unit? I can't seem to find this info on the web. 2) How do you find out the measured head usage on the SV-3800? I believe the Menu + wheel gives this information for the PCM-R500. 3) Anyone know of a source for manuals for both unites (copies, PDFs, originals - free or pay)? 4) Anyone know of a source for remote codes? I'll contact Sony and Panasonic to get pricing on the IR remotes, but I assume they'll be quite expensive. Section III - non-stealth mic mounts for capsule style mics: Any recommendations on brands or sources for stands (tripods, what-have-you) and mounts (clamps?) for core-sound style mics in environments where public taping is allowed? My "oh my god, I have to leave in a couple hours" solution involved a 3" piece of wood, a coat hanger, 20 rubber bands, and a couple of bandannas...it "worked", ended up causing my picture to be taken at least once, and helped us navigate to our blanket a couple times in the dark when people recognized who I was by the contraption and told me where my lost blanket was. But it wasn't really all that sturdy... Thanks! Brendan ------------------------------ From: Cjyellow@aol.com Subject: head time on a da30?? Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2001 19:28:39 EDT sorry if this is comon knowledge, but how do you check the hour meter on an older tascam da30?? i can't find anything in the manual..... thanks! steve@phatdats.com ------------------------------ From: Brendan Hoar Subject: Not quite Newbie Qs Part II: EQing out Wind Noise Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2001 19:49:08 -0400 (EDT) Forgot the most important bit: I've read it's possible to reduce, at least slightly, the impact of the wind noise on your recordings through the application of some low-end EQ work. I already put all of my DAT audio onto a Windows 98 machine using a DATport in preparation for CD-R burning. What's a good, relatively low cost, program that does a good job of digital EQ? Or would it be better to introduce an analog step using the analog EQ I already have at my disposal? If there aren't any low cost ones, what's recommended for the hobbyist? And finally, is it hit and miss experimentation for reducing the low end rumble of the wind noise, or are there recommended frequency band adjustments? Thanks again, Brendan ------------------------------ From: "John Burroughs" Subject: ISO Robert Plant 2001 shows Reply-To: "John Burroughs" Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2001 19:56:01 -0400 Looking for the following Robert Plant shows: 5-27 Philly 6-4 Detroit 6-6 Chicago And any Euro shows from 6-19 to the present. Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2001 21:22:31 -0400 Looking to tape Nels Cline next week, anyone forsee any problems? Never been to the venue. Contact off list if you like at mbernazz@bestweb.net Mike ------------------------------ From: "Gary Davis" Subject: MD vs. DAT battery life Reply-to: gdavis@loop.com Date: Tue, 31 Jul 2001 18:47:21 -0700 The bottom line is, to get the best quality on a MiniDisc, you have to change the disc every 74 mins. DAT can delivery the best quality for 3 continuous hours, or excellent quality for 6 hours. I do not agree that "LP sounds worse than MiniDisc". LP sounds perfectly fine to me and to many people who have actually listened to it (as opposed to just flaming it). Then again, LP does not have any sound above 14.5KHz, so this is an honest limitation and tradeoff. Anyway, there is very little information above 14.5KHz except for hiss, especially in an audience recording (high frequencies fall off rapidly based on distance from the sound source). The other main advantage to DAT is much better metering and level adjustment. This isn't a fault of the MD system, but most MD recorders I've seen make it very hard to adjust the record level (especially while the show is running), and harder still to properly monitor the record level (ie, good metering). Despite that, I would fully recommend MD to anyone who only had $200 to spend; who didn't plan to trade much (MD>MD copies degrade on each generation and are subject to SCMS, though MD>CD should be okay); and who taped bands that never play over 1 hr 14 minutes. For example, I have a friend who is still taping on a high-quality Sony analog deck, which only records 57 minutes without flips. I was begging him to get a MiniDisc, because Nels Cline (the band we record) doesn't usually exceed 74 mins, but my friend's constant pausing and unpausing of the deck during breaks, trying to cram the whole set into 57 mins, was bothering me. Plus, it untimately failed - he missed the beginning of one song, and one set ran past the end of his tape. --Gary ------------------------------ From: "Carl J. By the end of 2nd set I was getting really low levels and I had my pre-amp cranked. I had an umbrella over my mics but I guess the moisture must have clogged up my windscreens or something? Bummer. Opening acts and 1st set sound sweet. Anyhow, I dumped the DAT onto my PC and looking at the WAV you can actually see the gradual drop-off in levels. I was wondering what type of dynamics processing I can apply to the file (before I normalize) it to even out the differences in signal. I'm hoping to avoid making a volume envelope. Maybe some sort of compressor/limiter filter? Hope one of you can help me salvage an otherwise nice tape. Oh, BTW, I have both SoundForge 4.5 and Cool Edit Pro 1.2. Thanks!! Im fed up with my CMI8738 card (same type as the Zoltrix) I have run into the problem that my DA30MK2 i just got a month ago will not work directly with that card. The CMI card will not accept the Pro bit signal from the Tascam.. And the company (C-media) told me the drivers are made to ignore Pro Bitset.. apparently they are wrong and dont know what they are doing. Granted it does bit for bit transfers but with how off and on everything is I care not to use it anymore, but until i can track the 2496 down Im stuck wearing out my D8 to do transfers. I tried to send the signal from the DA30 >D8(REC mode)>CMI card, but as of last night it now records the data even at the correct frequency all sped up which made me go back and restransfer about 4 hours worth of tape and I still have about 3 1/2 hours of resampling time.
