From: "George S." <fearless-pigeon@nac.net> Subject: roger waters "tour forest" re-signups for #8 and #9 Date: Wed, 1 Aug 2001 14:47:45 -0400 hi everybody, we are finally up and running again with a stronger system then before so lets finally pick up were we left off. as you all know the last show that was sent out (#7 toronto 8/1/99) was flawed. we are still awaiting one more source for that venue to come in and then we will use the same tree structure we had the first time to make things right. again we will send out the discs to the branches and the leaves in turn will send blanks and postage to the branches for the reburn. we will contact everyone involved with the tree off list when the time comes . so now we would like to move foward and tree the boston 8/4/99 and the new jersey 8/6/99 shows. these two are excellent recordings to say the least. the boston show is recorded with sonic studios>pa-6lcs-7ml sec 6 next to the soundboard and is a top notch show. i believe this is also the same recording used to seed the release on the echoes newsgroup. the homdel show is right off the master with core sound modified biaugs>bass roll off>sony d-8 row r sec 102. so everyone wishing to get in on these gems should drop us a line off list with "tour forest 8+9" as the subject. your email addy, whether you want to be a branch or a leaf (branches must be able to handle up to four leaves) and state and country you are from in the body. and yes, you do have to re-signup for these as the original signups were lost with the hard drive (we hope you all heeded our advise and backed up your systems to prevent the hardship we have experienced) ) again we want to thank everyone for being so patient during this down time. it really make this all worth while when everyone works together .i must say you all are an excellent group of people and it is an honor to work with all of you in our quest to share the music. thanks again everyone and hope you all enjoy what is to come. shine on george s.

From: William L Stube II <wlstube@etree.org> Subject: High Capacity AA Batteries Reply-To: wlstube@etree.org Date: Wed, 1 Aug 2001 19:57:14 +0000 With all the talk of MD vs. DAT battery life lately, I thought people needing AA's should consider... http://www.thomasdistributing.com/ They have 1700maH AA batteries and you can buy high-speed charging options as well. One of my friends has been using these batteries in his d8 for a while, and claims to get 4+ hours of run time with the display light on. I just ordered mine the other day, so I have no personal accounts. Definately is better than buying a bunch of batteries you can't recycle. Maybe some sort of compressor/limiter > filter? Hope one of you can help me salvage an otherwise nice tape. Why don't you want to make a "volume envelope" - a "hand-drawn" curve of gain adjustment? I do this all the time. I think manual gain adjustments are *much better* than compression, because you're not changing the character of the sound, just the overall volume. If the volume change is fairly linear, you can try a simple "fade" where the fade doesn't start/end at zero. For example, in this case the volume is going down, so you could fade from 0dB to +15dB. To get the correct numbers mathematically, highlight a short piece of the music at "full volume" and get the average (not peak) RMS level in dB. Do the same thing for the music at the end. Subtract one from the other, and you have the number of dB that you want to change. --G
From: Stuart Gerber <stuart@mindspring.com> Subject: ISO: Abe from Saturday Pelham Date: Wed, 01 Aug 2001 16:13:49 -0400 Hey everyone, I am trying to track down a guy named Abe who let me patch into his rig Saturday night. He was running some CMC64vs (w/ active cables) > AD1k ... He was like 10 rows down maybe from the Soundboard tent and a tad bit off center (more to the right side of the section) There was also a pair of MBHOs clipped on to the same mic stand and i think in the end another set of mics had to be clamped when the row in front of him got kicked outta the seats. My first set of Saturday has a gap inside Mercy, and it comes back on towards the end of Mercy. My 2nd set tape is perfect. Abe or anyone else out there with his tapes that have no flaws please get in touch with me. I would also like to get some clones of Sunday from Abe as well if possible..I also would be fine with the Midside rig if your out there man.(i know it was there Friday night) Thanks, Stuart Gerber I can burn some discs for the help, but it would have to wait a few weeks since im about to move and I have finals this week.
From: "NashPhil" <phil@nashphil.com> Subject: Za2 24bit Update Date: Wed, 1 Aug 2001 15:46:50 -0500 PHIL WROTE: Hey there, Not sure if you folks know this or not, but with the right update to your system, the ZA2 can be used as a 24bit/48k PC Soundcard. It still has it's limitations, as far as being only usable with really stable systems that have an ancient ISA slot. BUT, if that sounds like you, check out a Za2 card. I've had mine for 3 years and still love it. Now, I just updated the driver and installed Win2000pro and it is working like a champ with 24 bit files. BTW, They are no longer in production as far as I know. They used to be around 400$new. Anyway, saw Adam's post and I thought I would chime in on my experiences with the Za2 card. Good Stuff. I've been pleased with it etc., but I'm in graduate school right now and really need to unload some gear. I have the original, box, manuals, etc. Any, I promise, offer will be considered as the semester is starting soon. Thanks. Adam

From: John Petroskas <jpetroskas@usa.net> Subject: homemade DA-P1 batteries Date: 1 Aug 2001 17:06:54 EDT Klay's post about mini-XLR connectors reminded me to ask for advice about= building a battery system for my DA-P1. I'm thinking about: 1) snipping the Tascam connector off the DA-P1 wall wart cable, = 2) soldering a male XLR to the wall wart cable and a female XLR to the Ta= scam connector's cable, and = 3) soldering a male and a female XLR to 2 cables soldered to an SLA batte= ry (one to charge the battery, the other to power the deck). This way I could attach the Tascam connector cable to the wall wart (for = home use), or to the battery (for field use), or attach the wall wart to the battery (for charging). Has anyone done this? Advice from anyone who has = built a battery system for the DA-P1 would be welcomed. BWT: Cowboy Junkies 7-13-2001 Barrymore Theater, Madison WI. The recording is very forward, time is about 150min. Beyer MCE83 X 2 + PS12V2ch> SONY PCM-M1 He was center in the crowded on the open space. So there are two mic touch noise at that moment on the tape. I'm looking for a copy of King Crimson or Neil Young in this tour. From: acffhmorst <morst@itis.com> Subject: Re: need help w/ a dynamics processing problem Date: Wed, 1 Aug 2001 18:12:32 -0500 Tim, It sounds to me as if your pre-amp batteries were dying, but maybe it was the moisture. . . I've seen level fall-off and it's always been from stretching the pre-amp battery life in my experience. Could that have been happening? Anyhow, I don't see why a volume envelope would not work, although if you're planning to eventually subject the file to dynamics processing, I might think you'd want to do it all at once in order to reduce accumulation of math errors. Just look at the fall-off of levels, measure the peaks in several spots, then have your volume curve compensate for the loss you were noticing. If you do use some compression and/or limiting you'll want to look at average levels too, in addition to peak levels. With volume envelpoe adjustment, there's no changing of the dynamics, just a gradual arithmetic shifting of the bits (AFAIK- which might not be too far!) This gradual shift is what causes the rounding errors in the math, where the reaminders must be truncated, or used for some dithering scheme. (I use pro-tools on a Mac, so I can't give you any software-specific advice) good luck, I hope I get corrected and not just flamed if I'm wrong! -t -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- (snip) By the > end of 2nd set I was getting really low levels and I had my pre-amp > cranked. From: Ruderallis@aol.com Subject: FW: Re: Best Software for DAT>PC Date: Wed, 01 Aug 2001 19:12:27 EDT Samplitude is the shit if you have a chance to use it. But the ~800 dollars is not worth the money. For normalizing and the eq's on samplitude 24/96 can't be beat. They are like no other I have used to be able to manipulate the curve like that is out of this world. Fortunately you can sample samplitude for free. And I do think that you can back date your clock to keep it going. WAIT THOUGH! The FREE CDWave is the BEST devise for DAT to WAV conversion. That is because it is hassle free when it comes to sector boundaries. This is what I do. I use CDWave for the conversion and track splitting; then I open Samplitude to normalize and whatever other destructive things I may or may not do. The thing with samplitude is that you can have a virtual project which the demo version does not really let you utilize. But the demo version is still sweet and it is way better than sound forge and the other less expensive programs. Although, I have been told that sound forge is just as good for normalizing the show. I would say if you tape some sonically clean and "sound" (ie not lame) music, you should be fine with sound forge if you only normalize. I would still use cdwave for the conversion though and then soundforge for the normalizing. If your tapes are at adequate recording levels, then you do not even need sound forge and you can just use cdwave and it is FREE. There are good faqs at www.etree.org and look at their faqs. If you are not into SHN (you should be!) They are better for archiving shows than wav/cd. But if you just want to DAE then you can just skip the SHN conversion and then rip your cd. Basically the deal is that many forms of editing are destructive. Therefor everything beyond conversion and normalization should not be done unless using a higher end program like samp. I would stay away from dehiss on soundforge. I have an Old And In The Way rehearsal from bear's collection and I think he ruined it by putting it through TWO passes of dehiss. I was sitting at my computer with samplitude and wishing that I could edit the source (SHN/WAV) and not the dedehissed source. Anyhow it is still a neat tape to listen to but .... you know... not worth trying to fix at this point. I do not feel that it is significant if other destructive edits are done after or before normalization. Actually, with a really low recording level, it is easier to edit after normalization. I have no problem doctoring up a bad recording which has been normalized. Therefor, in my opinion, there is no problem seeding normalized shows (using programs like soundforg). The problem is when you seed something over edited with a poor program which can not be improved upon later with a better program and then reseeded if worthy;) Hope this helps;) David Ziff In a message dated 7/27/2001 4:13:59 PM Pacific Daylight Time, DAT-heads-Request@datheads.phish.net writes: From: Keith Forman <kfor5311@postoffice.uri.edu> Subject: Best Software for DAT>PC Date: Thu, 26 Jul 2001 21:42:31 -0400 Howdy, I was wondering if anyone could make a good recommendation as to software for going DAT>PC. From: acffhmorst <morst@itis.com> Subject: Re: Not quite . . .a newbie (wind noise, head hours) Date: Wed, 1 Aug 2001 18:22:08 -0500 I have a SV-3700, similar but older then the 3800, and this is from memory- If you aren't comfortable messing in the software settings of your deck, you should be very careful when you do this. I have no idea how much damage you can do this way- probably nothing permanent, but it could make your deck work weird. . . hold down both "counter mode" and "counter reset" buttons while you press and release "pause" this brings up the diagnostic mode- you may then use the "counter mode" to page through (i think it's) 10 screens of info. . . . one of these is head hours, others include error rate (while playing), output level adjustment from -10 to +4, digital output mode- aes or iec (aka s/pdif), digital connector mode - RCA or 3-pin XLR connector, and a few other interesting and possibly incomprehensible things like a continuous margin indicator which goes too fast to read! hope this helps you! one of the readings in there is head hours, you can probably figure it out by process of elimination- speaking of which, I think the one which controls SCMS is the one that says 00P00! -tom -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 2) How do you find out the measured head usage on the SV-3800? I believe the Menu + wheel gives this information for the PCM-R500.
