Seth ------------------------------ From: David Danek Subject: What the heck is a "professional" model digital recorder? Denon DN-C550R UNFRIENDLY UNIT! Date: Wed, 1 Aug 2001 22:02:35 -0700 (PDT) So when a company calls something in their product line a professional model, what does that really mean, and is there a standard definition to meet in order to call a product professional? I ordered a Denon DN-C550R dual tray cd burner, and it is advertised as a professional model. It even says so on the unit. In my mind, pro = no SCMS/complete control over SCMS (like my Fostex D5 DAT deck). I guess I'm wrong, because this unit seems pretty goofy. Here's what this thing does (and feel free to let me know if I'm simply on another planet and this really is perfectly logical): So the unit is advertised in Denon's fact sheet as "Defeatable SCMS/User selectable." That's it. A little vague, but it's professional, so to me that means you can choose to write a disc with SCMS bits at 11, 10, or 00 (endless copies). Well, not quite. . . So here's a quote from the Denon manual describing the user selectable "SCMS enable" setting "SCMC (sic) ENA: In keeping with SCMS, digital recording is not possible if the recording source contains a copy prohibit code." So if you put the unit in this mode it will act as a consumer deck and not copy anything that is SCMS 11. Can someone please explain why anyone buying this "professional" unit would voluntarily want to set the thing not to record? And if that isn't goofy enough, to quote the SCMS inhibit (ignore) instruction: "SCMS INH: Digital recording is possible without this restriction even if the recording source contains a copy prohibit code, but in this case the copy prohibit code is written on the recorded disc. In addition, a copy prohibit code is written on the recorded disc even if the recording source does not have a copy prohibit code." Whoa . . . So if I send a SCMS 00 signal to this deck from a DAT recorded on my Fostex D5, it will make the SCMS on the cd 11; not 10, but 11. So I give that disc to anyone with a consumer deck, they're screwed. Wha??? Now the sales rep at Denon said that there were political decisions that forced the unit to be made in this way. He said they had to consider theur European music division. He also said they didn't want to run afoul of the Home Recording Act. Now I'm not sure what the Home Recording Act says, and I'm not going to research it right now, but there has to be exclusions for "professional" units, hence the question and whether the law defines what a professional unit is. So, while I would love to keep the Denon unit, it has to go back in exchange for something that truly will not add to the problems some of my trading partners with consumer decks already face. Anyone know how the Marantz CDR 500 dual tray burner handles SCMS?? Yeah, the easy solution is to go to a computer cd burner. But I'd rather have a standalone since it makes life a whole lot easier overall, particularly if I have to transfer a DAT to CD. I have to give a big thumbs down to the Denon for this, IMHO, goofy feature. Seems to me they are guilty of at least, misleading advertising, if not ourtright false advertising. Yeah, it can copy any source. But if it's a true pro deck, at least in my mind, it should not introduce SCMS. . . What's your opinion, we'd like to know! __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Make international calls for as low as $.04/minute with Yahoo! I am new to taping.....I've taped one show with really crappy equipment and obtained unlistenable results. I just bought some (3) Nak CM-300 mics bodies with CP-1,-2,-4 capsules and a Nak 550 recorder (I know it's not a DAT but this seems to be the most knowledgeable board when it comes to mics). For the price <$1000 I hope I have got the most versatility / sound quality for the buck. In large venues with poor acoustics and / or loud fans I intend to point the shotguns at the stacks and run a center omni- or cardioid. In smaller venues or closer in I'll just use the CP-1 or -2 capsules. I was wondering what people though of these mics.....I've searched through a couple of years of the digests but have not found much info. I CAN'T find any info on specs at all so any would be helpful. Also, I am looking for a Rycote windshield that would fit these if anyone knows a model number that will work. The other mic setup I was considering was a DPA 4060 setup run off a 17ft stand in venues that allow taping using a Jecklin disk. I was worried though with Omnis only that the poor acoustics of the venue would overwhelm the direct sound and give me the type of recording I made at my first attempt at taping. Any input on these subjects would be helpful. One last question on the Nak mics what type of shockmount is the best to use an elastic style one or one of the "rubber" Shure type shockmounts? Please respond using the board so others can gain knowledge from this also. Thanks for the bandwidth. The internal power supply is fried, a condition that I understand happens to all these units eventually. Have any of you encountered this problem and have any workarounds for it? It seems that they don't make the parts any more for this unit and the unguaranteed repair at the shop is $400. Any thoughts on bypassing the power supply and running it off an external batterypack? Thanks. ------------------------------ From: Bob Ramstad Subject: Re: DAT-heads Digest #987 Date: Thu, 2 Aug 2001 08:25:02 -0700 Among other things, Ruderallis@aol.com said: ====================================================================== I use CDWave for the conversion and track splitting; then I open Samplitude to normalize and whatever other destructive things I may or may not do. ====================================================================== NO NO NO. If working with a live recording, and you normalize each track separately, there will be a noticable change in levels between songs. This can be VERY annoying. The reason this happens is that when you normalize, the software looks for the loudest passage, and then increases the volume so that passage is as loud as possible. If you are doing things a track at a time, a quieter track will be boosted more than a louder track, and the crowd noise at the start and at the end (not to mention mic noise, preamp noise, and media noise) will NOT match up with the adjacent tracks. It is therefore essential to do any adjustments like normalization through the entire file BEFORE splitting. Probably the most common rationale I get for doing normalization track by track is that it makes the quiet tracks louder... and when normalizing a show at a time, this might not happen. If it was that way at the show i.e. Neil Young with some quiet acoustic numbers and some loud electric numbers -- don't you want the final recording to be SOMETHING like the show? One good way to improve the loudness of the quieter songs is to normalize the whole show, then carefully increase the levels in the quiet parts using a hand drawn envelope. The start and end of the region should not be boosted at all -- this will ensure that everything blends with the part before and the part after. Another possibility is to use a limiter plus volume increasing. Sound Forge 5.0 includes a pretty interesting plugin called Wave Hammer. This method will "soft clip" the loudest parts of the show so the volume for the whole show can be increased. This sounds good for shows where there are just a few really loud peaks -- typically drums, PA pops, or crazy loud guitar -- which don't sound bad when "soft clipping" is applied. It's important to be careful when setting the levels, of course. Digital editing is pretty cool, and I'm by no means an expert, but it really bothers me sometimes when I get discs in trade that are really really messed up. If you're doing DAT>CD, personally I recommend doing as little as possible, unless this is a MASTER that you made yourself i.e. you went to the show and taped it with mics or soundboard. My only other suggestion is to LISTEN to everything you produce i.e. I always burn a CD-RW of anything I master and keep it around for a month or two and listen to it a couple times a week and make notes on anything that bothers me. That's actually how I figured out that normalizing per track was a VERY BAD idea -- trial and error. Hope this information helps, and good luck! -- Bob ------------------------------ ** FOR YOUR REFERENCE ** To unsubscribe from this digest, please send email to dat-heads-unsubscribe@datheads.phish.net If your email address has changed, you may (optionally) send the message to dat-heads-unsubscribe-oldaddress=olddomain@datheads.phish.net and the old address will be removed.
