Is it possible to record at 44.1 Khz using a mic, or does this sampling >rate only activate if you are hooked up digitally to a CD player? You can't record 44.1 from analog input (mic or line), only digital input (be it a CD player or a 44.1 DAT). That was one of the upgrade differences between the D7 and the D8, the D8 can record 44.1 from analog input. -Jeff Lester ------------------------------ From: BHance@BroadViewNet.com Subject: Denon Date: Fri, 3 Aug 2001 13:31:38 -0400 I have 2 Denon DTR-80Ps. One is still working fine, with the original heads, has never had service, since 1993. The other needs new heads. I wish I could buy another. The Denon DCD-1500 CD player I purchased in 1985 or 1986 has never had service, and still works flawlessly. As my only CD player, it is used for several hours almost every day. I have no complaints with my Denon Pre or Power Amps either - since 1986. I have nothing but praise for Denon from my personal experience with 5 of their products. -Bill >From: Klay Anderson >Subject: Denon? Professional? Speaking of the DTR-80P, I recently aquired one of these and after a little service, it works fine again, but I don't have any manual or anything for it. I'm wondering how the front end compares to say the PCM-M1. Is the pre amp better/worse? How about the A/D converter? The only real complaints I have with this unit compared to the M1 is that it doesn't have a digital pass-through capability (unless using optical in/coax out) for chaining, and it only seems to last about 2-3 hours on 6-1500 mAH NiMH's (I don't have the original battery) where the M1 lasts 4+ hours on 2. Does anyone happen to have a spare manual (or photocopy) or any other accessories I might be interested in? This past Wednesday night I was fortunate enough to see the world debut of The Word. Its the North Mississippi Allstars (Cody Dickinson on drums, Luther Dickinson on guitar, Chris Chew on bass), John Medeski on Hammond B-3 and another keyboard and Robert Randolph on pedal steel. I CANNOT emphasize enough that if you have a chance to go see this show, YOU MUST. They were absolutely, positively mind-blowing. What these 5 guys did on stage for over two hours straight was orgasmic. ALL instrumental power gospel, blues, funk, rock is about the best way you can describe them. The best show I have seen in god knows how long. Check out the website at www.whatistheword.com and the debut album The Word on ropeadope records (a GREAT label) They are going to appear on Late Night with Conan O'Brien this Tuesday the 7th, and are only playing a handfull of dates...the last one being Berkfest. (Do NOT miss their set at Berk if yer going!) Just listening to my tapes from that night......they don't even do this show justice. Talk about inspirational! I got a slightly older copy on eBay for $100. Waves processing plug- ins are generally considered among the best, and are used quite widely by pros. -- Michael ------------------------------ from: "sherm clow" Subject: Mac Software Date: Fri, 03 Aug 2001 13:57:09 -0600 There's a free version of ProTools on the Digidesign web site. Don't know if it will do all you want, but is a first class product for small time editing, etc. There's other stuff available as well, but no good, low cost, hobbiest product. Macs tend to get used by the Pros, so the=20 software is expensive. OSX may change that, really, really good audio support in the operating system. Bias and Peak soon available, but, again, a little pricey. ------------------------------ From: Klay Anderson Subject: Denon Goods Date: Fri, 03 Aug 2001 14:04:51 -0600 Seth Breidbart Subject: Re: Denon? Dupree ------------------------------ From: "Gary Davis" Subject: In Defense of the Denon CD Duper Reply-to: gdavis@loop.com Date: Fri, 3 Aug 2001 14:17:12 -0700 Admittedly, the handling of SCMS on this model isn't ideal, but it's not unusual. The Sony R500, R300, and M1 do essentially the same thing. They ignore SCMS, but they will record it on your tape anyway. Otherwise, it looks like a very nice piece. I tested both the Denon and the Marantz CD duper, and the DAT Store sells both brands. For my money, the Denon was friendlier to use, slightly more powerful in features, and worked better on certain cheap CD blanks. I would assume that Klay's rant against this model is because he doesn't sell it. --Gary ------------------------------ From: acffhmorst Subject: Re: Sony D7 44.1 Khz sampling rate? Date: Fri, 3 Aug 2001 16:16:34 -0500 You can only lock to a 44.1KHz digital signal, from analog you would wind up at 48KHz. . . I think that's so Sony can sell you a bit-mapper (SBM-1) but the joke's on them, 'cause the (expensive) Apogee sounds better. The D-10 is the same way with the 48KHz form analog, but has better A->D converters than the D-7. -tom > The Sony D7 owner's manual says you can record using 48, 44, or 32 Khz > sampling rates. With the usual stereo cable (tip-ring-sleeve) it can go one way only.
