I found a nice little shareware program called Felt Tip Sound Studio that I am pretty fond of. You can download it for a free trial with no limits on it's capabilities. I think it's good for 15 days. Best of all, it's good for being run on 15 different days. So if you don't use it for a week, you haven't lost any of your trial time. It's pretty cheap too. Something like $35. I've been using it a lot and it's a handy little sound editor that seems to do the trick for what I want to do. http://www.felttip.com neal ------------------------------ From: "Matthew Hommes" Subject: RE: Denon DTR-80P Date: Sat, 04 Aug 2001 16:10:00 +0800 >Yes, it does, but you need the right cable: its >digital cable is a >tip-ring-ring-sleeve, which might not be that easy to >find. I've spent a good part of the day (and now night, turning to day ;) ) researching this, and i can't find anything either way (yup,i already checked BTAT). Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I will be stealthing with my M300's>dmic20>m1 instead of the usual Sonic's rig for the first time, goddess bless spandex (insert shudder here), so wish me luck! You can, and it will almost always work. There will be impedance problems, because the outputs are designed to drive a single input; but all of the components that were looked at (dat-heads did some serious discussion about such splitting a few years back) were quite able to drive to receivers. Date: Sat, 4 Aug 2001 16:04:05 -0700 (PDT) I just got my DAT (PCM-M1) about a week ago and after reading that the batteries last 3 to 3 1/2 hours I figured I was safe for a 90 minute Cult show last night. Well as my luck had it, I got about 39 minutes of recording time on the batteries and missed half the show. I charged them when I got the unit til the green lights came on (Maybe left them in the unit for another half hour or so) and put them in the unit set the clock and ffwd and rew a tape and left them in the unit. The battery level was full when I got in last night and started, but when I checked the show at the end my batteries were dead and I got 39 minutes of a recording. The hold button was on. Does this sound right? Leaving the batteries in the unit for a week (no power) would cause them to drain? I always seem to have battery problems. (on my old mini disc setup too) I'm gonna do Depeche Mode next week and plan on using a fresh set of lithiums unless otherwise directed. I don't want a battery pack cause thats too big to sneak in. I'm gonna re-try charging my batteries that came with it and record something at my house and really test it. Too bad I didn't get the whole show, the first 38 minutes sound great, Sound Pros AT933's Hypers>Batt Box>M1, about 15-20 feet from right stack. Anybody get the whole show? Lots of U2 and others to trade. -Chris __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Make international calls for as low as $.04/minute with Yahoo! Messenger http://phonecard.yahoo.com/ ------------------------------ From: Brendan Hoar Subject: Head Alignment (Sony/Panasonic) Questions Date: Sat, 4 Aug 2001 22:40:03 -0400 (EDT) Some interesting results with my four decks. My first set of masters were made on a Sony TCD-D100 portable I purchased 3-4 years ago. I had a tape despooling incident last year, after which it wouldn't play tapes. I sent it off to Sony, who charged me the $150ish and said all they did was clean it. It works again, so, whatever. During the time it was at Sony service, I purchased a Sony PCM-M1, as I needed a portable unit for Falcon Ridge last year. Later, I found that all of the tapes recorded on the TCD-D100 would produce diginoise when playing them back on the PCM-M1. At that point, I felt glad that Sony had not reset the TCD-D100 to spec or whatever, as that would have made all my older tapes unlistenable. As mentioned earlier on the list, I recently purchased used Sony PCM-R500 and a Panasonic SV-3800 units on Ebay. As expected the TCD-D100 tapes produce diginoise when played on the Sony PCM-R500. *HOWEVER* they play fine on the Panasonic SV-3800! The tapes recorded on the PCM-M1 play fine on *both* the PCM-R500 and SV-3800. Question 1: Should I stick with my premise that the TCD-D100 always produced tapes are out of alignment and should be cloned to a more trustworthy deck? Other interesting things: The mechanism of the TCD-D100 loads tapes more slowly than the PCM-M1. The noises it produces while loading are also "slower sounding" or lower in pitch, using the same power source. I noticed this as soon as I purchased the PCM-M1. At this point both units have around the same # of hours on them, and I still notice the load sound difference. Question 2: I wonder if this shows some slight differences in the mechanisms, or just that the TCD-D100 is older? Question 3: Any comments on head alignment issues in general or regarding these three decks? As usual, a reference to a link with info would be welcome as well. -brendan ------------------------------ From: Brendan Hoar Subject: Managing DATs & DAT trading Date: Sat, 4 Aug 2001 23:15:02 -0400 (EDT) Cleaning Up Masters: I have a lot of raw masters. They include lovely bits of audio like loading the tape in the mens room, testing the mics, or beginning in the middle of a song due to bad timing on my part, etc. at the beginning of the tape. They typically do not include any start IDs, except where I had to stop and start recording due to tape length or battery issues. Some are also in bad need of EQ work to make them more listenable. What do people typically do before trading such material to other DAT traders? And after changes are made, do you keep both DATs, or recycle the original DAT? Organizing DAT lists & Trade lists: What tools and procedures do you use to keep track of your DATs and the status of your trades? thanks, Brendan ------------------------------ From: Brendan Hoar Subject: Re: Not quite . . .a newbie (wind noise, head hours) Date: Sat, 4 Aug 2001 23:33:41 -0400 (EDT) Follow up on wind noise (stopping/eqing out), head life, capsule mic mounts, etc. Again, let me know if I'm being too wordy or demanding or whatever for dat-heads. Or let me know if this is actually interesting. Thanks. My original info begins with ">", responses by friendly dat-heads begin with "::". I ased about preventing wind noise w/ cardiods: >My first outing with a new set of Len's stealth cardiods this past weekend >at Falcon Ridge was excellent, except for the wind noise issue. I had >neglected to do my research before leaving and hadn't known that cardiods >are, by nature, much much more wind sensitive than the omnis/binaurals. > >I sent Len some questions about the heavy duty windscreens. However, I'd >like to ask a general question: in emergency situations, what common >items might best be used for wind screen purposes without coloring or >muffling to sound too badly? It was rumored that one of the other tapes >caught off-guard by the afternoon winds had resorted to using tube >socks... Richard responded: ::one way i've found to reduce wind noise whilst running ::cards from a hat is to use those cheesy foamish hats, ::you know, the real soft squishy ones that usually have ::a fish protruding from either end, or silly graphics ::from retirement homes/golf courses ;) ::If your mics are bigger than Core Sounds, a nice felt ::British "driving" hat, you know, the ones that button ::down atop the visor. Try it backwards, so the sloping ::side points towards the back/neck. These are made in a ::nice plush, wind-eating style by Kangol. Richard's suggestions sound great for stealthing on a windy day. However, for non-stealthing, I'm still at a loss for recommended common household item substitutions for wind-screens. Guess I'll have to experiment, and I'll start with the tube socks, perhaps creating a bit of a cage with some extra wire ties I keep around for cables... I then asked about studio DATs: >I recently acquired, via ebay, a Sony PCM-R500 and a Panasonic SV-3800. >No manuals, no infrared remotes. > >1) What are the rated head lives of the heads in each unit? I can't seem >to find this info on the web. Neil responded: ::i have 2000 hrs on each of my r500's and still have not used even so ::much as a dry cleaning tape. my fostex d10 (comparable transport/head to ::the panasonic is much less happy. about every 1000 hrs it needs service ::of some sort. like a couple of hundred bucks worth...) Apparently, the automatic cleaning of the Sony PCM-R500's is quite a nice feature... Jason responded (re: panasonic): ::don't know how long the heads are supposed to last but I hear they ::are quite the work horse, not to mention the best sounding...which ::is why I bought mine. The above is generally good news. However, I was hoping for pointers to "official" recommendations on head life for the two units. If anyone has any more info, let me/us know. >2) How do you find out the measured head usage on the SV-3800? I believe >the Menu + wheel gives this information for the PCM-R500. I had sorted out the steps for the Sony unit, which are nearly intuitive. Jason gave the following info for the Panasonic: ::I own a SV-3800, and could help you out....to find out total hours you hit ::counter mode, reset, and pause all at once, then use mode to go through ::the menu total hours is the last option. (later) ::I was wrong about the hour meter it's option #7 Which is halfway documented on the front panel anyway, had I checked. Tom responded directly to the list on this topic, so I haven't captured his response here. >3) Anyone know of a source for manuals for both unites (copies, PDFs, >originals - free or pay)? Neil responded (referring to his Sony unit): ::i can run you a copy and mail it. send addy. Thanks, Neil! Jason responded (referring to the panasonic): ::If someone hasn't already offered I can also copy my manual for you if you ::would like, haven't seen it lately, but I can easily find if you want.let me ::know if you want the manual or need the remote info, or anything else Thanks, Jason! No rush... >4) Anyone know of a source for remote codes? I'll contact Sony and >Panasonic to get pricing on the IR remotes, but I assume they'll be quite >expensive. Neil responded: ::try here: http://www.mr-remote.com/ It appears also that Panasonic has the remote for he SV-3800 available pretty cheap. I'll contact mr-remote for availability the sony remote. I then asked about non-stealth mic mounts for capsule style mics: >Any recommendations on brands or sources for stands (tripods, >what-have-you) and mounts (clamps?) for core-sound style mics in >environments where public taping is allowed? Michael responded: :: http://www.soundprofessionals.com/micaccess/tmounts.html Ooh! I am planning to give them a call monday and see if they can recommend mounts that will work with their competitor's (Len's!) products. >My "oh my god, I have to leave in a couple hours" solution involved a 3" >piece of wood, a coat hanger, 20 rubber bands, and a couple of >bandannas...it "worked" Er, that is a 3', not 3" piece of wood. Now I've got "Stonehenge" going through my brain! Oops. I then asked about EQing out the wind noise >I've read it's possible to reduce, at least slightly, the impact of the >wind noise on your recordings through the application of some low-end EQ >work. I already put all of my DAT audio onto a Windows 98 machine using a >DATport in preparation for CD-R burning. > >What's a good, relatively low cost, program that does a good job of >digital EQ? Or would it be better to introduce an analog step using the >analog EQ I already have at my disposal? > >If there aren't any low cost ones, what's recommended for the hobbyist? > >And finally, is it hit and miss experimentation for reducing the low end >rumble of the wind noise, or are there recommended frequency band >adjustments? I didn't receive any replies on this topic. I tried using Digidesign's Pro Tools Free version, but experienced glacial response time trying to import WAVs (less than "real time"!) as well as super slow UI response time after any function completed. Combine that with the complexity of the interface, and it's just plain off the list. I now have to decide about whether or not to spend $150ish on Cool Edit 2000 with some of the extra modules, or keep looking. Any advice is welcome, again. :) Thanks y'all! -brendan ------------------------------ From: GnPhsn2@aol.com Subject: ISO: Cheese in Eugene, OR. 3/12/01 Date: Sat, 4 Aug 2001 23:36:42 EDT Looking for a clone of this show.
