From: "Gary Davis" <gdavis@loop.com> Subject: Re: Denon CD Duper Reply-to: gdavis@loop.com Date: Sat, 4 Aug 2001 22:20:36 -0700 For the record, the DAT Store sells both the Marantz CD duper, and the Denon CD duper. They both cost us exactly the same, and they sell for exactly the same. We have them both in stock. Therefore, I believe I can be completely unbiased if I think one is better than the other. If another dealer "slams" one of these two products, I think it's fair to ask, "Do you only sell the other one?" --Gary

I'm a newbie and don't have much to trade, so I'm hoping someone will take pity on me and work something out with me (blank media, whatever?) :-) If you're interested, email me and I'll tell you what I do have and maybe we can work something out! From: Alan Saferstein <gruvenon@netzero.net> Subject: Volume Envelope? Date: Sun, 05 Aug 2001 12:14:45 -0400 I use Sound Forge 4.0 and it allows you to adjust the volume of a selected range by shaping a line. The problem I have found is that this line cannot be raised over 100% or 0 dB, that is, it can only fade, not raise the volume in the envelope. Hence, SF calls the feature Graphic Fading. Is there other software or a later version of SF that will let you do this and raise the volume? I typically have to combine Graphic Fading with raising the volume of the selection to get the desired effect. From: Kurt Vogel <kwvogel@yahoo.com> Subject: Re: Lucinda Williams Date: Sun, 5 Aug 2001 09:43:06 -0700 (PDT) While in the past I think Lucinda herself has been somewhat ambivalent about taping, her road manager (at least on her most recent tour before this one), was very, very anti-taper (taper=bootlegger, period). Certainly, she has no official "open-taping" policy in place, and your best bet is to stealth. Shows on this tour are well under 2-hours. > I'm going to catch Lucinda tonight at The Celebrity > Thtr in Phoenix and was wondering if anyone knows her > stance on taping. From: "Owen O'Neill" <oweno@home.com> Subject: Grovel for a patch at the Word/Robert Randolph - Irving Plaza this Wed Date: Sun, 5 Aug 2001 14:06:34 -0400 Please..... !!! I'll be at the show this Wednesday night - Irving Plaza NYC. I have a trusty set of AT853 's that I use for stealthing (the majority of what I tape) but have no stand or full size mic's. I'd much prefer a patch for my M-1 so I don't have to stand like a zombie on the mezzanine, keeping my mic's perfectly positioned in my hat or collar. I will gratefully provide a few tasty discs to whoever can help out (including a Stanhope House Robert Randolph show from this past winter/spring). Please reply offline to save bandwidth. Thanks! One is still working fine, with the original > > heads, has never had service, since 1993. The other needs new heads. I > > wish I could buy another. I will second the praise for the DTR-80P - I love this deck. Denon will no longer service these units but Pro-Digital was more than happy and able to fix mine recently at a very reasonable price. If anyone has another they want to sell, working or not, please get in touch. > The only real complaints I have with this unit compared to the M1 is > that it doesn't have a digital pass-through capability (unless using > optical in/coax out) for chaining, and it only seems to last about > 2-3 hours on 6-1500 mAH NiMH's (I don't have the original battery) > where the M1 lasts 4+ hours on 2. You definitely can do digital chaining via the coax in/out on these units. The coax in/out is a 1/8" stereo mini plug, so if ou get a 1/8"mini>RCA l&r adapter then you use one of the RCA's for digital in and the other for digital out (I think red/"right" is the digital out but can't remember). Works like a charm. I like this deck for stealth duty a lot more then my D7 as the light is a more subtle amber color and you can stick it face up in a fanny pack and check levels easily, while you need to turn the Sony decks to read the signal on the top of the deck. As for batteries, I never had the original battery but have the 6 AA cell pack that came with it and have always found it will more then go the distance on six regular alkaline batteries (i.e easily 3-4 hours). Since it requires 9v rather then 6v, I can't run it off my eco-charges, but have been meaning to contact eco-charge and see if they make a 9v system. > > Does anyone happen to have a spare manual (or photocopy) or any other > accessories I might be interested in? > I'll second this request - I've never had the manual for this deck and would love to have a copy. I'd been happy to trade a tape or some discs from my collection in return, or could offer copies of the D7, SBM-1, and/or PCM-R500 manuals in exchange. Please get in touch if you can help. ============================================= This message was sent using Endymion MailMan. http://www.endymion.com/products/mailman/
From: Keith Shapiro <keither@iname.com> Subject: M1 Battery Life Date: Sun, 5 Aug 2001 14:39:30 -0400 (EDT) I've posted this before, but seems like I need to do it again. I've been happily taping with an M1 since July '98. I never used the Sony batteries (in fact, they got lost in my move, so I have no idea where they are). At first I used a 3-D cell sled that I constructed. That became unwieldy and the connectors weren't on very well so I decided to switch to the AAs. I regularly get well more than 3+ hours of continuous use out of Duracell Ultra AAs. This means 3 hours of recording, some rewind, and then at least another hour of playback after the show. However, I do the unpack either on the AC power source or on an old set of batteries before the show, and don't load my new batteries until I'm ready to enter the venue (at most 4 hours prior to showtime). I'm recording line or mic-in with no digital outputs, no headphones plugged in, and the light off. I'm certain you could probably get similar results with the new Energizer "plus" batteries. I've stuck with the Duracells because I've had confirmation after confirmation of their reliability. YMMV. Keith --- Keith D. I have Sacramento and Concord in amazingly good quality. Some of the best shows I have ever done. Ran DPA-4061s with great seats as well =). I will ONLY trade either of my sets for the Shoreline show right now. I don't have time to really trade for other stuff, I am too busy with other stuff. Also looking for any high quality sources of any New Order shows that feature Billy Corgan on guitar. I have the whole main stage of Area One from Shoreline, again with DPAs. Thanks and have a nice week everyone! -Jason

From: "rob landis" <nocturnalsunshine@hotmail.com> Subject: windscreens Date: Sun, 05 Aug 2001 21:07:05 -0400 you can make windsceens out of pantyhose- this is often done in project studios to make a pop filter for vocal mics. pop filters are essenttially the same as windscreens. i have a really good article on how to make one cheaply using supplies from a home depot- type place. however, this article assumes that the wind is coming from directly in front, not from all around, so you'd need to adapt the design to extend all around the mic capsule. basically any type of cloth can work as a windscreen/pop filter. the thicker it is, the more effective, but the more it will muffle the highs. maybe take a tube sock and replace the foot/tip area with pantyhose. if that's not enough defense against wind, add a 2nd layer, etc... good luck, and if anyone wants a copy of that article, let me know. thanks. rob rob _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp
