Reply-To: "skomp" Date: Mon, 6 Aug 2001 15:29:29 -0500 RE: Sony D7 44.1 Khz sampling rate? Not sure if this is exactly what Tom was talking about but-- This perplexed me as well. Originally I thought that unless the D7 has the 48.1/44.1 switch on it, it was only capable of recording in 48/32. In LP mode it records at 32, in SP mode it records at 48.1. But the manual says 44.1, so where is the switch???? At first I thought it was just an updated manual that didn't apply to my antique deck as from what I gathered there are 2 versions of the D7 model out there. Apparently shortly after it was released, a second generation of D7's were manuf. with the 48.1/44.1 switch that is standard on the D8 which replaced the D7 deck. Anyone have a D7 with the 48/44 switch that can verify this? HOWEVER as I've now discovered my antique D7 can and does record in 44.1 mode but you guessed it the trick is an external Sample Rate Converter (SRC) in front of it. I've done it, albeit inadvertently. I was on a chain and there was a device in front of me that was kicking out a 44.1 signal. I took the DAT home and threw it in my PCM-R300 and sure enough it displayed as 44.1 & the DAT sounded fine and had no ERRORS. Regardless, your best bet is to always record your DAT master in 48.1 and not worry about 44.1 until you want to transfer it to a 44.1 medium. Going the PC route -> Transfer/record your DAT to a 48.1-16bit WAV file and THEN use Samplitude or SoundForge (or other) program to resample to 44.1 and THEN split the tracks --> DO NOT resample track by track, or you'll be in for a nice surprise. I repeat - Resample the WHOLE 48.1 16-Bit WAV file first to a 44.1 16-bit WAV file and THEN split it up. Stand Alone CDR burner -> If you're hooking up your DAT to one of these units, they generally have an internal SRC that does the 48.1 > 44.1 resampling for you. I've yet to see one of these CDR units that doesn't have one- but then again there's lots of stuff i still haven't seen.... ------------------------------ From: randy@monkeybiz.Stanford.EDU Subject: 1700 mAH NiMH AA's Date: Mon, 6 Aug 2001 13:33:46 -0700 (PDT) in my opinion, the current markup on the higher capacity AA's (at about $4 each for 1800 mAH (highest I know of) vs $2 each for older 1400-1600 mAH cells) isn't worth the extra cost. But then, my mode of usage is to swap batteries between sets/acts, no matter how long they've played....It's easy to carry extras around, and even the 1300's will run my M1 about 3 hours....I can see that in some stealthy situations this might not be so easy, but I haven't had trouble doing the battery swap using a jacket or long-sleeve shirt to hide what I'm doing from public view... and with practice, you can do the swap without looking, while you carry on conversation with your disinterested friends..... Likewise, even though I can get over 9 hours runtime out of the 9V 150 mAH radioshack NiMH cells in my 18V mic power supply, if I'm doing an all-day festival, I'll swap them out after 5-6 hours, so that I don't have to worry about the volume drop/distortion that will occur as the cells drop down below 8 V. And not to beat a dead horse, but if you buy a smart charger, you can leave the batteries there until you're ready to go, eliminating problems with the self-discharge of cells sitting on the shelf. ------------------------------ From: Beast914@aol.com Subject: Mini AMP worth my time? I was intimate with the "DAT Bill" or the Home Rights Recording Bill"'s early formative years and spent a lot of time in Washington lobbying and educating Congressional leaders about it and its quirks and fallacies. Seth is mostly correct here. The "rest of the story" is that the Matsushita's and Sony's were so afraid of their own shadow with the bill, it was decided on a Tokyo golf course to block all machines at 44.1, even from each manufacturers "pro" machines (there is a specific exemption in the law for pro machines) to give them time to sort out the ramifications. In the mean time, the consumer interest in DAT fell sharply as the delay in implementing and interpreting the bill grew longer and longer. Pro's however, picked it up and made it (at the time) the de facto mastering standard. One does wonder, however, if any artist got so much as a nickel from the taxes the bill levied on consumer machines, blank home DAT and (later) home CDR media. There seems to be more and more of these types of gizmos popping up every day. I know I won't be buying another DAT deck when my current one dies. Now I have got the problem that I am not able to remove the tape from the recorder. I searched the archive and found some messages where other persons reported a similar problem with this machine, though I couldn't find any answers. Here is one example which describes the problem clearly: I was listening to a DAT that I just received. I pressed Stop, and the pulled the Open switch to remove the DAT. It began blinking Unload, but it never opened. Now, when I hold it up to my ear, I hear that something is spinning inside the unit, and every so often there is a beep. When I remove and reconnect the power supply, Unload will blink 30 times and then the unit appears to go into Hold mode because none of the buttons work and just the clock is on the display. But, I still hear that spinning inside the deck and that beep every so often. The only way to stop the spinning is to remove the power supply. Anyone know what to do about this? Looks like I will have to send it in for repair, but I am hoping that someone here may be able to provide a quicker solution! I would really appreciate any help or hints. Thanx in advance. They last longer than the usual 1600 mAh and is much better than the ones Sony provided with the M1. I have a few 1800 mAh which I have used and they have not failed me yet. But remember the first few charge and discharge cycles need to be carried out before you use them. Best to charge and discharge them at least 3-4 time before thinking of using them for shows. It lasted over 4 hr for me with the M1 a few times. Using scotch (or other) tape risks severe head damage. I have bit my tongue for a long time, but had to chime in about my only experience with the DAT Store. I purchased a Sony 60ES in 1996 from them and it came to me with no remote control. After calling them weekly for about 3months, then biweekly for another 3months, then monthly for about 12months, my resolve weakened and I gave up. I never once got a single call of mine returned. The only time I got to speak to the owner was if he answered himself. If anyone else answered, I was always told to give my name/number, and they would get back with me....never happened. The owner (when I got to speak with him) promised to get a remote out to me multiple times....also never happened. I ended up calling the better business bureau and calling Sony and complaining about the DAT Store. After informing them of how terrible I was treated over almost 2 years, they (Sony, not the DAT Store) sent me a new remote free of charge and a letter of apology. I always steer my friends away from Gary and the Dat Store if at all possible. Though I never had any interaction with Gary, the store he represents not only treated me badly, but several others on DATheads (hunt through the digests around 96-97). I get most everything used from this list, or from Marc Nutter at Sonic Sense. They have always gone out of their way to treat their customers with great respect, and are also quite knowledgeable. Thanks for the b/w, I can already feel the closure ;^) peace, Chris Mescia BWT: HH&H 9-23-98 2xcdr audio or 1xcdr .shn B&P x2 folks. ------------------------------ From: GuitarBud7@aol.com Subject: ISO: a pair of AT8410a shockmounts and a shure vertical bar Date: Mon, 6 Aug 2001 22:10:42 EDT hey everyone i had plans to buy these from a guy, btu the plans fell through does anyone have a pair of AT8410a shockmounts AND/OR a Shure Vertical Bar that they might be interested in getting rid of? please email me at Guitarbud7@aol.com if you might be able t ohelp me out thanks mark goodell Guitarbud7@aol.com ------------------------------ From: Matthew Jackson Subject: Chastain Park Date: Mon, 6 Aug 2001 22:09:44 -0400 Chastain Park in Atlanta was probably the easiest show I ever got my stuff into. Physically, the whole thing is, as it is named in it's full name, an amphitheater, so it is semi-circular rows in steps or terraces down to the stage. The whole thing is outdoors, so I would probably get close for fear that it might sound too wet or distant. The entrance gates are oh-so-wide and they don't check you or feel you up for equipment. This may vary from show to show, but since this venue is primarily intended for affluent venue subscribers who bring wine and cheese picnics to enjoy during the show in the wide rows, they probably know that the regular patrons would be utterly incensed if they were to send them through metal detectors or frisk them like common criminals. Depending on how populated the show is (I was at a packed show), you might be able to go down closer in the front. There not tons of space between seats, but it's obvious when someone didn't show or a seat wasn't filled. Naturally, it's your job to fill that seat... When I was there, there was security and many of them were high up around the whole venue (there are lots of paths and steps around the semi-circular seats) where they seemed to be watching for people with cameras or recording gear, but in all likelihood they were just keeping those pathways safe and clear (naturally there is personal paranoia when you run the risk of being hassled or losing your tape). However, it was an easy experience and the security was "all show and no go" if anything at all. Hope this helps. Best, Matt ------------------------------ From: "Will Spence" Subject: Mic for MiniDisc Date: Mon, 6 Aug 2001 20:26:47 -0600 Hello All, I just completed a search on Yahoo and came across this incredible group. I understand this is mainly for DAT heads but I thought I could scratch somebody's brain with some questions I have. Please understand that I am very new to the world of digital recording period. I don't even have a DAT player or recorder. Recently I received a hand me down Sony MiniDisc player that my friend gave me. I would like to start doing recordings straight to the MiniDisc player. My questions revolve around what type of microphone would be best for my situation. I searched the Sony web site and they have several very nice microphones that look like they would suit my needs. Currently I want to do recording strictly of myself. Later down the road I may want to expand to other avenues. I want something with very nice clarity and sound for voice. I want something very small that is easy to travel with. I'm thinking something along the lines of a lapel microphone or something that can be clipped on to a shirt etc. Will a microphone with a standard head phone jack be sufficient? I also would like to know if I will need any type of preamp for the microphone will be necessary? I want there to be sufficient gain on the microphone I'm using. Is this possible with a small microphone? Are there small portable preamps available on the market? Price is also a consideration. Does Sony make decent microphones for what I'm wanting to do. Any information you could give would be very helpful. Thank you for your time. Sincerely, W.
