Not before a stop to Amoeba Records on Telegraph. 10:15 I parked my car a block away off Telegraph across from MR. Sushi and went shopping. 11:50 I return to my car to see the radio ripped out and wires everywhere. So I'm thinking oh please, not the trunk. My rig was gone. Black 1500 Pelican with a "Relaxin with the disco biscuits" sticker on the front and various back stage satin passes on the back inside: 2 Schoeps MK 4 caps s/n 74725, 74726 1 KC-Y cable (yellow riptie) in zip loc bag 1 active cable extension (blue riptie) in zip loc bag 1 Schoeps ORTF bar 1 Schoeps USMC bar 1 old ecocharge battery (small pin) in black bag with purple handle 1 old ecocharge connector to dap-1 1 DAP-1 with HHB purple sticker above the tape area 1 VMS5U (energizer lithium batteries in it) 1 pair of 1ft XLR cables (neutrek connectors) This is my plea for the bay area folk to peak into their local pawnshop and let me know if you see any or all of this. I submitted a police report. However I think the gear has a better chance showing up at a pawnshop or the Saturday swap meet at MLK and Ashby. thank you for reading and thanks for your help! Marc Federman ------------------------------ From: "Brian Price" Subject: USB Specs and 24b/96k Recording Date: Fri, 10 Aug 2001 01:27:28 -0500 The USB 1.1 spec supports up to 12 Mb (Megabit) throughput. That means a maximum of 12,000,000 bits can be carried per second. If my math serves me correctly a 24 bit/96k audio signal equates to a raw stream of 2,304,000 bits per second, around 20% of what the USB 1.1 bus is capable of handling. This does not allow for any error checking data or overhead, but it can't be too much. Even if you double the required bandwidth to account for transfer overhead you still have room to spare. USB was designed to accommodate audio transfers just like these. Have a look at the USB specs at http://www.usb.org/developers/docs.html USB 2 is meant address digital video transfer and compete with Firewire. It appears on the Midiman site they are saying it is a USB (1.1), 2 Channel, Mic Pre & AD Converter >Mac's version of USB is FireWire and it is much, much faster than the PC >implementation of USB. > >Ask if he has done it with a PC... Also Firewire and USB are completely different. All New Macs have both Firewire AND USB. Firewire, AKA IEEE-1394 (it's standards designation), or i-Link if you are Sony, is geared to be a much higher speed bus than USB. You can buy add on cards for both standards for PCs as well as Macs. Firewire is capable of speeds up to 400 Mb (400,000,000 bits/sec). Read More here http://developer.apple.com/hardware/FireWire/More_about_Firewire.html Hope this helps. The Midiman products looks promising, they just need to make them DC Powered, rather than AC. Ain't technology grand. Brian ------------------------------ From: "Brian Price" Subject: Chastain Park Taping Update Date: Fri, 10 Aug 2001 01:42:15 -0500 Just a quick update for anyone who was wondering. I taped Bruce Hornsby at Chastain Park the other night and had a few notes to share. You are allowed to bring coolers, beer, & food which is really nice, so getting gear in was absolutely no problem. They even have people to help you carry everything, but they are usually busy carrying someone's 7 course catered meal to their seat. If you are stealthing you will have no worries. Security did question the few of us that set up, but fortunately one of the other tapers had contacted Bruce's management and had an email confirming that it was still OK to tape. I was hassled several times during the opening band's set regarding the height of my stand, which they claimed had to be no higher than shoulder height when SEATED so it wouldn't block anyone's view. Not good, since the place is basically a big dinner theatre and the crowd is pretty chatty. I ended up moving to the last row for Bruce's set and ran my stand as high as I wanted without any further hassle. My advice is to come prepared with some sort of confirmation it is OK to tape and plan on setting up in back to avoid any hassles or just stealth it, but crowd noise would be a problem then. It seems they are not used to tapers at all, so you need to do some legwork to reduce the hassles. Hope this helps save a few people out headaches. Date: Fri, 10 Aug 2001 02:58:15 -0400 (EDT) Just wondering if anyone in the area will be able to tape this. Great band that broke up a number of years ago, should be a good show and probably free. Date: Fri, 10 Aug 2001 08:46:02 +0100 Guys, after having read the past months achieves very tentatively regarding personal preferences for battery choices, it is time I raised my hand for a bit of help with my current DAT recorder. I have the ancient D3 which records brilliantly and has never let me down in terms of recording quality, my ONLY drawback, is the power consumption... I've been down the route of having the so called '2 hour' SONY battery fail after ONLY 45 minutes twice now..!! even after multiple charge / discharge cycles. I then acquired one of those external 'battery packs' from Sound studios which claims that by using 6 'C' cell batteries, you can have upto '10 hours' of continuous recording....even THAT arrangement failed after 45 minutes last week when I went to an ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC concert here in the UK..!! What now..?? Should I try D cells which it claims can give upto 20 hours of continuous recording..?? What's all this talk of 1600 / 1800mAh NiMH batteries....could I somehow use that arrangement in this case? Has anybody any ideas on the way forward as I dont fancy at this stage to buy a new DAT player, just need to sort out getting more out of this one in stealth situations. your views / comments / links / suggestions would be well received... I'm sure somebody somewhere has tackled this problem or at least encountered it. Thanks. ------------------------------ >> A shorter 2.5 foot length dual XLR-3F adapter is available for doing this with molded Right-Angle male stereo plug. (Please take NOTE: The R/A mini-plug on this adapter will NEVER damage the mini-Jack input on the deck like the straight mini-plugs offered by others tend to do eventually; especially if not really, really careful all-the-time to never tug on the mini-plug cord even a little bit). You'll need to add two regular XLR mic cables directly from the mics that're of any desired length to mate with this 'deck-safe' adapter.
