Has anyone tried taping Byrne yet this year? I hope to see and tape him
shortly. What kind of anti-taping policy should I expect? How careful do
I need to be? How long are his shows (still under 2 hours)? One set? Any
help appreciated.

Hi--
I just finished cloning a DAT, rewound the clone in my M1, went
to open it.
Unload kept flashing, but it never actually opened. Can hear a
whirring inside. The deck got very hot and I unplugged it.
I searched the archives, found lots of questions about this and
no answers, aside from "I never had that problem" posts and info
about getting service.
Is there no reset button combination or other way to get it to
unload and open? It's a 2 year old deck, still under warranty,
and has never had this problem before.
Thanks
Olaf

The cheapest and easiest way to dim the back light is to take a piece
of Saran-Wrap type of plastic film, "paint" it with a red, permanent
magic marker, let it dry, fold it in half (so that you will be looking
through two layers of Saran Wrap), then cut to size and tape it over
the display. A red marker works much better than a black marker.
There was a dat-head who did a bulk purchase some years back of film
used in the stage lighting industry, but this seemed to cut too much
light for my taste. With the magic marker and saran-wrap you have very
good control of the light attenuation depending on the number of layers
of saran wrap you use.
I suppose transparency films such as used with overhead projectors may
work well in place of saran wrap.

Okay, I've had my Sony M1 and CSB's for a few months now and this is
definately the hobby for me.
Now I'm really looking forward to stepping up to the next level of equipment
this winter. I'm looking for research material and not finding much geared
to the newbie/novice when it comes to mics and other equipment. Which leads
me to this question:
- Are there any great live recording publications and/or web sites out there
that I've missed?
- Even mediocre ones?
- Particularly ones aimed at newbie to novice tapers?
Please email me with any urls or titles that come to mind.
No need to elaborate (though it would certainly be appreciated).
I plan on compiling a few web pages that cover my experience from the
beginning. I'll include any feedback you have to offer, links to sites that
you provide, and references to any publications that prove useful.
Thanks,
Jackson Gibbs

after a hectic week, these are my new fresh masters from Spain:
8/aug: U2 barcelona (Spain) OKMIIR>M1 side stack (excellent!)
1/aug : Placebo Vigo (Spain) OKMIIR>M1 floor dead center (heavy bass)
benicassim festival FM>ST-EX100>DTC-ZE700 SBM 44.1KHz direct to CDR
3/aug: James, Flaming Lips, Divine Comedy, Hooverphonic (inc), Clinic (inc)
4/aug: Belle & Sebastian, Manic Street Preachers, Mercury Rev (inc),
Mogwai, Glodfrapp, La Habitacion Roja, Françoiz Breut (inc)
5/aug: Pulp, PJ Harvey, Orbital (90 mins!!), Big Star, Sneaker Pimps
There were more than 30 hours of broadcasts for benicassim,
but I catched mainly complete concerts unless noted. Quality is excellent.
Mercury rev did only allow 5 songs in the broadcast but 2 new songs were
among them.
For Placebo i'm trying to remaster it to make it less boomy. The rest is
ready to trade in CDR format (digitally transfered).
I'm looking for U2 masters or 1st gens from any tour.

At the Colonial Theater, Keene NH (Aug 8th) show the sound board patch was
not working so the first song or several songs were not recorded by all the
other tapers patched in. As I was the only one with a freestanding mic
setup, I have these songs.
Well... as "Murphy's Law" or "Shit happens" sayings suggest... I had
recording problems too, but at the end of the second set. So between my
successful first set and the soundboard patch being a successful second
set/encore we could compile a complete show recording by trading what we
each have for the night. I would love to make this happen! If you are one of
these tapers, please reply off-list. Great show!!
Thanks,
Winnie

Date: Mon, 13 Aug 2001 01:57:53 -0400 (EDT)
I have about 20-25 DATs to transfer to my desktop for mastering to CD-R
(plus some wind noise removal as previously mentioned).
My two decks are a Panasonic SV-3800 and a Sony PCM-R500.
I'd like to leave some of the longer DATs transferring while I'm
away/asleep. However, I am concerned that leaving the DATs in the decks
after they reach the end of the tape will cause additional head and/or
transport wear.
Do the above decks automatically disengage the tape from the head at
end-of-tape or after the auto-rewind (the sony does this)?
If so, is it immediate, or after a certain amount of time?
What other side effects should I be concerned about, when leaving tapes in
the decks?
Thanks,

The DAT-Heads archives speak for themselves.
Cassette House consistently (approx. monthly)
will SPAM this newsgroup with advertising.
The issue I brought up, is whether or not this
vendor sends SPAM to the newsgroup. B/c there
is no argument on that, this thread will now run
a different course.
Masterpiece, Terrapin and Am-Dig play by the
rules. Which when you think about what Cassette
House does, it doesn't seem fair. If all the different
vendors started doing what Munson does, this news
group would be the worse for it.
My question remains the same. Why can't Munson
play by the rules?
