First, the hearing assist transmitters operate on many different
frequencies. Some in the 74mhz area, some in the standard FM band, some in
the 174mhz band and some in the 216mhz band. Still others operate using
modulated infrared technology. Some are compressed 2:1 and others operate
simply with minimal deviation. Remember, these are designed for speech
assistance not as audiophile reference receivers.
So, if one wanted to see what was available at a venue, at the very least
one would want a portable scanner (RS and others sell them) and then make an
output cable from the scanner to your recorder. Now at this point one may
have a digital recording of a mono, compressed, poorly mixed and probably
grossly distorted audio signal.
Go stealth; it'll sound better.
Thanks!

Art,
All Sean is saying and I believe that the overall feeling is that it's cool
to post sale prices...................
That is w/ just ONE caveat:
Try to equal out these "sale" posts w/ posts that answer
some of the questions posed to the list.
The ones that you are comfortable answering.
In a word: CONTRIBUTE
Also, send some technical info to the list.
This can be a "kill 2 birds w/ one stone" kinda thang.... (see above).
Also, if you are gonna post sales stuff w/ no technical merit.....
How about kicking down a bandwidth tax offer???
Do you trade DATs? Do you trades discs?
Do you tape live shows??
If the answer is YES to any of these questions....
Then where's your kindness?
I think I speak for most of the list when I say, "put up or shut up,
brother".
Your choice ")
I could give a crap if you have Mitsui's for a good price. My vendor for
discs is Tape Warehouse www.tapewarehouse.com
My vendor for blank DATs is Masterpiece www.masterpieceav.com
I got my R-300 from Gary Davis. He was cool. My only beef w/ the DAT Store
was that they did NOT double box my deck for shipping. But it was a great
price and it works just fine.
Gary has also contributed to the list w/ his Phish 2000 Tree.
I would like to see more offers from Gary in the future.
To balance out his sales posts. Others may agree.
Marc Nutter is just one great guy!
Of everyone you "sales dudes" that posts to the list, his posts are the most
balanced w/ something of merit offered to balance his sales posts. He posts
answers to technical questions and he kicks down live tapes to the list. I
have known Marc Nutter since he first started and was handing out business
cards in the taping section at DEAD shows. At a recent SCI show out at Red
Rocks, I had forgotten my COAX cable and left it back home. Marc was more
than happy to help out. Marc is on the cutting edge of field recording
equipment development and his posts are informative and helpful. With that
being said, I don't think many mind him sliding in a sales pitch.
Klay has been very helpful to me, as well.
I live in Jacksonville, FL so I am pretty tight w/ the Oades. I hang w/ them
at shows and have learned alot from them. Therefore, I am loyal to them in
many ways.
Most serious tapers are the same way. They pick someone and they stick w/
them.
Just about every vendor has his or her merits and can contribute to the list
in one way or the other.
If you want to post, you should contribute.
Balance is all we ask.
Peace & moe.

As far as I know, there are no "rules" set down.
Art Munson has been around for a long while, and had proven himself to be
a gentleman and a good businessman, as have others on DATheads. He has
an opt-in private periodic news letter which can hardly be considered SPAM,
and his posts to this list are of interest, on topic and welcome.
I'm starting to get a little fed-up with your carping on the subject, as
are others.
We are all interested in who-has-what for sale, and we are all capable of
deciding on our own principles just who we do business with... keep it up,

For the record, I am reminding all vendors of this.
Art has definately contributed technical information
to this list over time including several longer articles
he comissioned from Bruce Bartlett. He also has jumped
in (akin to Len's "7 pin bible") with collected wisdom
on head cleaning. I want to encourage vendors to be
cognizant of the desire for a balance of technical posts
with sales material, but am not intending to comment
explictly about any particular vendor/member.
I hope that clarifies it. Perhaps, though, Art
would oblige us with a mention of some of those articles,
and if they can be read on the web to close the chapter
on this.

it's called a radio :)
seriously, this may not be reliable enough for you. first of all, from
the stage to the sb there are dozens of signals -- one channel per
instrument, microphone, etc. so even if you could tune in you'd only get
a fraction of the music. second, i doubt if any sound companies send
sound to the sb via FM -- if there were any static picked up due to a bad
signal, it would get amplified through the PA, the audience would hear
white noise instead of music, and it would be the end of that sound
engineer's job. third, the amount of bandwidth needed by all these
channels and the fact that they'd have to be transmitted at low power over
unlicensed frequencies would increase the likelihood of interference.
some sound systems have used FM to broadcast a two-channel mixdown to
satellite speakers -- Dan Healy did this with the Grateful Dead in the
late 80's to conveniently provide music to speakers in the hallways of
arenas. but given the frequency roll-off of FM radio (15 KHz) and the
likelihood of dropouts/static, the sound was not as good as an audience
microphone setup.
so i wouldn't be surprised if some bands are doing what Healy did now, but
don't rely on it too much. you could try to get a portable radio with a
digital tuner and good (or external) antenna and high-quality output (if
such a radio is even sold), stay away from interference, and cross your
fingers.

I got back today from a very long weekend at berkfest. on Sunday i was worn

showcase stage for most of the weekend but I do have DA-P1 patch masters
from most of the main stage sets. Below is a list of what I got and below
that is a list of what I am looking for. I have more detailed info on all
of these recordings...the ones w/ the actives were run ortf for
everything...
I ahve not listened to most of these but for the most part they sound very
good!!
Please email me if you have some of the sets I did not get and if you would
like to trade...or if you have alternate sources of certain shows I may be
interested in checking them out as well...
