Subject: question/newbie help with my new rig
Date: Tue, 14 Aug 2001 15:09:37 -0400
Pardon my ignorance, but i need some help and you guys seem like the
knowledgable type...
i've been taping MiniDisc for a year now, and finally spent the money and
bought a rig.....the final shipment came yesterday and this is what i got:
Audio Technica 4041 mics
Graham Patton DMIC-20
Sony D8
EcoCharge Battery
Ok, so i take everything out and try to put the thing together.....
got the DMIC and sony plugged into the Eco Charge and they both have power.
Plugged the mics into the DMIC and got levels.....no problem.....
Plugged the DAT into the DMIC using BNA>RCA converter and then the 7pin into
the DAT and the D8 says NO INPUT when i try to record....
so i used a RCA to mini to connect the D8 and got levels for 1 channel, but
the sound was really Fuzzy....
so i guess what my question is...why doesn't the 7-pin work? do i run a
single COAX to mini from the DMIC to the D8? I thought i should be using
the 7pin...
any help is appreciated, i'm attempting my first show on thursday, and i
don't want it to be a total waste.....i've read all the manuals and am
pretty sure i got the set up right....the NO INPUT is throwing me off....
thanks,
keith

I am selling a pair of my AKG B18 Phantom power supplies (each uses 2 9V
batteries) since I recently upgraded my rig. I bought these about a year
ago (actually less than a year a ago, since I bought them after moe.down
last year). Paid $75.00 each new for them. I'd like to see $100.00 for
the pair, but I will entertain other offers.
Peace,
Wayne

I just recently acquired a lightly used Panasonic SV 255.
the manual just tells you which buttons to push to make it work.
I am in search of any knowledge that current or past users of this deck
would like to pass on.
any tips on usage or idiosyncracies of the deck would be appreciated.
a google search did not turn up much besides Seth's market posting and a
bunch of people's tapelists with shows mastered on the machine.
I also have a few specific questions as well:
1. does it tolerate 90m tapes?
2. any ideas on expected head life? other known problems or things to watch
out for?
3. what level of humidity does it take to trigger the DEW warning? would a
packed theater or bar on a summer night be enough to put the deck out of
commission?
4. I have had one intermittent problem with the machine. a tape will
sometimes not
play and sometimes it will also not eject. E-07 is on the display when this
happens. if the tape does not eject, cycling the power lets me eject it. the
same tape will sometimes play and sometimes won't. is this a loading
problem? is there a list of the error codes available?
I would be happy to compile any information I receive and pass it on to
anyone else who may be interested.
to the first 3 for b&p or trade (sorry, cdr only)

hey now,
i'm thinking of getting my hands on some new mics, but would need to sell my
old rig in order to afford everything. i have a skm140 kit (neumann ak 40
cardiod caps, lc3 active cables, and km100 bodies), as well as a pair of
ak50 caps (hypercards). the skm140 kit comes in a large wooden jewelers box
that accomodates all the parts listed above. the ak50 caps come in similar,
yet smaller, wooden boxes. the skm box has a slight chip in the finish.
everything else about these mics are on the pristene end (no scrathes,
dents, dings, etc.). i also have AT shock mounts, a t-bar, and wns100
windscreens. included in the skm kit is an x/y mount and an ortf mount (the
one mount has preset angles for both).
these mics were purchased in the summer of 2000, and have been used for
probably 35-50 shows, and 6 studio sessions.
make me an offer!
going where the climate suits my clothes,
-brian

.......... i was under the impression that sony's sbm technology basically
truncated a 20 bit signal down to a 16 bit signal. when you use an sbm in
front of your dat deck, the dat tape is still being recorded at 16 bits.
sony claims that using the sbm device will ultimately improve the sound
recorded on a a 16 bit dat tape (because the sbm removes the most inaudible
parts of the music as it truncates from 20 > 16 bit.)
....... also, the sbm technology is not the same as hdcd. these 2 are not
interchangeable.

Subject: need help understanding battery power
Date: Tue, 14 Aug 2001 18:11:35 -0400
I use a minidisc. It has a DC in port marked 6V. The AC adapter is 6V. The
manual speaks only of 6V. Radio shack has a rechargeable battery that will
last 20 hours. It says it's for most CD and MD decks. It is 4.0 volts. Heres
my question... the lithium battery in the MD is marked 3.5V. The piggyback
battery pack that came with the deck for extra power accepts three AA
batteries. That's a total of 4.5V. It plugs into the port marked 6V. I
bought the $40 Radio Shack battery because it was offered for $20. I plugged
it into the MD 6V port and it worked fine. So what gives about all these
various voltage specs. They ALL work. Is this like my Zefiro Inbox? The
Zefiro takes a 9V battery. Yet the jack for adding your own power accepts a
wide range of voltages up to 48 I believe. Anyone see any problems with my
using the 4V power pack in my MD?
Thanks!!
Winnie

Did anyone in the TS (located to either side of the soundboard) manage to
make a decent tape of this show? Mine's got a load of what sounds like
comb filtering due to the difference in distance between the stacks from
where I was set up. I'm guessing most other tapes are gonna sound like
this to some degree. A tape was apparently made from a *much* better
location, though, but I haven't seen it surface anywhere yet; I figured
I'd ask here if only to get a better copy of the encore.

Skydog Gypsy out thursday night.. we have a pair of KM140s but just a D8 i
think so we really dont want to have to use the A/D in the deck. We either
need to borrow a decent A/D to go digital into a D8 or a P1 at least. The
band really needs some AUD recordings to go along with their Matrix

C'mon folks - think about it!
Why EVER resample on-the-fly when you could do it as a batch
process on the PC. On-the-fly is a streaming process that is totally
intolerant of any errors that may pop up. A batch process has all
day to double check itself and not produce any anomalies, artifacts,
or errors.
The show is gonna become a file on your hard drive anyway, and the
batch process takes what? 5-10 minutes tops? Even if you don't
believe it makes any difference, why not take an extra few minutes
and be SURE!
