Craig,
Why not try a regular 12 volt Sealed Lead Acid Battery from your local
battery supplier (SLA)? They can probably set you up with a charger
too. I have a 12 volt system from Ecocharge for my tape deck, and when
the batteries finally failed (after 5 years of use) I replaced them with
batteries from my local place and it was perfect (and much less
costly). Get a "smart charger" so you can leave it plugged in and it
won't keep charging the battery, and you can even get multiple cells of
varying sizes and see how long they will run with your mic setup. My
7.2 Ampere-Hour batteries cost $20-$25 each, the store with the more
industrial location was less expensive than the retail one, but the
retail one had all kinds of cool batteries and chargers on display- I
went there first to see what I needed, then once I knew what that was I
made my purchase from the wholesale-counter type place. Bye the way,
these things are heavy as lead, but they're worth their weight in music!
I have a very similar preamp, the Beyer MV100, which calls for 24V dc
input. . .I have yet to make the adaptor so I can use my two 12V cells,
but look forward to eliminating the 9v's except for lightweight /
stealth requirements. . . the Beyer has the same chassis as the Sonosax,
but a gain switch (+20, +40, or +60 dB) instead of the Sonosax's knobs.
Same 9V sleds too.
Good luck, and it would be useful if you could post results of your
running times with various sized SLA's to the list, so others can
benefit from your testing.

I have a sonosax which I love but running thru all the damned 9 volts is
killing me. Wondering if anyone knew of any outboard power units for the
sx-m2. It has a 12 volt DC in jack on the side with the xlr ins.
any help is appreciated. Craig

Hey folks. I've collected two sources for this show:
Source #1: B&K 4061 -> D100 (taped by Ray Peck), in balcony across from the
hanging speakers.
Source #2: "Schoeps CCM4 > Sonosax SX-M2"
Source #1 is flawless, and I have archived it onto SHN files and seeded it
to etree months ago. In giving the Source #2, the Schoeps source, a
critical listen, I have noticed a few instances of the left channel dropping
out.
I am interested to know if anybody has any leads on the taper for the
Schoeps source, for a few points:
1) More source info (location of mics -- balcony?, stand height, etc)
2) Do these flaws exist on the master DAT?
3) If yes to #2, perhaps the taper would like my fixed version (or the
other source)
The remainder of this post contains my fix-list, and the tracking to make
sense of the times, for the Schoeps source:

Definitive’ U2 Radio Documentary to Air in UK
This weekend BBC Radio Two in the UK begin the first of a two-part exclusive
documentary, The U2 Story.
Presenter Simon Mayo travelled to Cologne for extended interviews with Edge,
Adam and Larry and to Berlin to talk with Bono. Word has it that the two
hour documentary is one of the most in-depth and definitive programmes the
band have participated in.
The programmes have been put together by a BBC Northern Ireland production
team, including Mike Edgar and Stuart Bailie, a former NME journalist who
has written about U2 for many years.
Also interviewed for the programmes, which are interspersed with music from
20 years of U2, are Paul McGuinness, producer Brian Eno, Live Aid organiser
Bob Geldof and many other colleagues and friends of the band.
The programmes go out on August 18th and August 25th at 8pm. More
information as we get it.

Hi,
I'm just diving in to a batch of old reels from garage sales, basements,

be needed to quiet the SQEEEEEAK on the guides and heads, and make the

get a copy from you.

I know what you're saying but how does this compare to the other software
resampling? I just find it hard to believe Samplitude would add this feature
into their software if they knew it was very inferior. I saw a post on
another list where someone stated they used Samplitude's on-the-fly software
resample multitudes of times without incident. Also, I must have a very slow
processor and serious lack of ram but if I resample (48>44.1) with Sound
Forge 5 and use the anti-alias filter it takes me about half an hour to do a
60m DAT's worth of tunes...

Hey People,
Just got a great sounding (and I'm fairly certain, SBD) Keb Mo show from
someone who really knows little about the world we DAT(Digi)-Heads live
in (ie- no date/venue/gear info). So if anyone can help, I'd be
grateful. Clues are that what description I did get was that it was
taped in a club in the North East and when the show starts, he mentions
that it's nice to be playing in a place of higher education and that he
got his schooling from the streets but maybe in his next life he'll get
some of his schooling in the classroom.
So, can anyone help??
BWT- Keb Mo (currently) unknown show. I can only do this on CD because
I do not have a digital soundcard. I would also send anyone CDs who
would make me a digital>digital copy on DAT, I would spread that too.
My only exception is if I find out this was a show he has as a release
but I don't believe that is the case.
Peace,
Sean

Subject: How to use a DATport with RealPlayer (i.e. how to force 44.1 KHz sampling rate for USB audio under Windows 2000)
Date: Wed, 15 Aug 2001 22:01:38 -0400
I use an Opcode DATport, which is a USB device that takes digital audio from
the computer and sends it to the coax digital in on a DAT deck or in my case
Meridian speakers. It can do audio in too. I've used it successfully with
Windows 98, Windows 2000, and Mac OS X, although the configuration program
that comes with it only works on Windows 98. You can configure the DATport
on a Windows 98 machine and then use it on other machines. I got mine used
on ebay for $75. They're not made new anymore.
Windows 2000 uses the built in USB audio driver with the DATport. I've been
using Media Jukebox to play MP3s and it seems to do a good job of keeping a
stream of zeroes going to the DATport when no sound is playing so you don't
lose the start of MP3s due to USB startup latency. Under Windows 98, the
DATport software has an option to do this for you but on Windows 2000 you
have to rely on the application to do it and it seems to me that Media
Jukebox is doing it (but I'm not sure).
I've had no problems playing 44.1 KHz MP3s, which is what I configured my
DATport to expect. But when I'd try to use RealPlayer, typically with audio
sources sampled at lower rates than 44.1 KHz, I could never get any sound
out of my digital speakers, presumably because of sample rate problems. I
don't know if the source of the problem was in the DATport or in the
speakers, but basically I wanted to force the audio coming from the PC to be
44.1 KHz. As far as I can tell, there's no way to do this using the Windows
2000 user interface.
However, I found a trick. If I start playing a 44.1 KHz MP3 using Media
Jukebox, I'll hear the MP3. Then I can then start playing a Realplayer clip
and I'll hear both sounds mixed together. I can then hit pause in Media
Jukebox and I'll continue to hear the Realplayer track. Evidently, when you
mix two sources together, it forces Windows to use the higher sampling rate
which is 44.1 KHz in this case.
So my way of forcing Windows 2000 to convert audio to 44.1 KHz before
sending it to the DATport is to first start a 44.1 KHz MP3 playing and then
rely on the mixer to use that higher sampling rate even when I pause the
MP3. This might be working because Media Jukebox continues sending zeroes
even when the MP3 is paused but I'm just guessing about that.
