Yikes, I wouldn't be using any lubricant! If my memory serves me correct.
They are squealing do to the
fact that the binder was changed many years and the magnetic coating is
separating from the backing.
There is a way to "bake" the tapes (yes in an oven) to keep the tapes
together long enough
to get the material off of it. Takes a lot of cleaning of the guides and
heads as you are
are transferring.
I'm sure there are folks here who have more specific details. I haven't had
to do it in
awhile so my memory is a bit fuzzy on it.

Assuming the BTAT info is still current and that I can get a board patch
from Louie, what do I need to get it into my D100? (BTAT says "a single
XLR or coax patch" is offered.)
If the BTAT is not correct, please let me know more current info on Los

Just got back from taping Tool in San Diego. The tape is very close and pretty good. there
was a lot of bass and even though I used the roll off it is still a little bassy not bad
though. However, there is a dumb screamer bitch that screams throughout the show. I am not
trying to discourage trades it is a great tape that was made in the second row on the stacks
so the sound is extremely close and clear. However, I don't want any surprises. My setup
was M1>DPA(4061)mod>Att(-20 db). Let me know if you are interested in a trade. I am looking
for recent tool as well as the shows I mentioned yesterday.

You did not say if the tape base (Scotch 111) is
acetate or polyester (Scotch 203 type). If the
tape is Ampex 400 series, the problem is the
backcoating, and the only solution is to heat them
in a convection over at a particular temp for a
particular time (obviously I don't recall the
particulars). This gives you a window of about a
week to make the transfer. Contact Quantegy (Ampex
after name change) for details
<http://www.quantegy.com/technical_support.htm>.
Otherwise, you are likely out of luck, as lube
will destroy information and make a mess. For
ultimate quiet, however, try WD40.

It sounds like your tapes are suffering from "sticky shed syndrome". What
you need to do is to bake the tapes. This problem occurs with tapes
manufactured between the mid-70s to the mid-80s and has to do with a
reaction between the oxide formulation and the backing material. The tapes
will shed all over the heads and the wraps are literally sticking to each
other. The solution is to bake the tape in a convection oven that can
provide consistent even heat for approximately 8 hours at a temperature
between 125 and 132 degrees (don't let the temp go over 135). This should
make the tape playable for a period of time (a week to a month) before it
reverts back to its "sticky" state. Try this on one and see if it works.
This is only for polyester backed tapes. Do NOT bake acetate tapes! it will
ruin them. If you arent sure if it is acetate, hold the reel up to a light,
if you can see light through the tape (translucent), it's acetate, if not
(opaque), it's polyester. also, acetate tape will break cleanly, where
polyester will stretch.
hope this helps,
-mahatma

No no no no no no.
What is happening here is that the binder and lubricant have broken down
over time. This happens with most tapes, some more than others depending on
brand, storage conditions and age. One cannot simply spray "WD40" and have
it go away. These tapes in order to become playable must be baked in a
specific and controlled manner to temporarily restore them and allow them to
be played maybe once or twice. I have many articles on how to do this; a
good start is here:

Mint condition with manual and power supply but not original box. Toslink,
Coax and AES/EBU (xlr) inputs and outputs. Will pass through DD and DTS
signals. Strips SCMS!
Warning! I have found that the Tascam DA20 does not work well with this
unit. Attempting to send a AES/EBU signal to the Tascam via this unit, or
attempting to strip SCMS when sending the Tascam a signal causes
unpredicatable results. The only thing that is predicatable is that your
music is not recorded. I have heard, however, that this box works fine with
most other DAT decks (as others on DAT heads can attest).
Asking $90 plus $10 shipping, worldwide.
Thanks.

Subject: New Sony DGP problems, ISOs and a WOB
Date: Thu, 16 Aug 2001 16:30:42 -0400
Hi DAT-Folks,
A couple things for ya'll today:
New Sony DGP tapes:
I was in Oregon this weekend for String Cheese's Hornings Hideout when I ran
into a problem I haven't noticed in quite sometime. During the first set on
the first day, I went to check on my rig and noticed that my deck (a Sony
D100) had stopped recording. Frantically, I re-started the deck and it
began recording again, but stopped in the next few minutes. There was
another deck patched out of the optical digi that had no problems, so I know
the issue is isolated to either my mini-xlr cable connecting the zefiro
inbox or the d100 itself. At setbreak I switched tapes and had no problems
with the second set. On Saturday, I had no problems with the first set but
during the second set the same behavior occurred. Fortunately for me I had
no problems for the rest of the festival. Now I used to have these same
symptoms any time I used Maxell HS4/90s so naturally I stopped using those
tapes. Since then, I switched to Sony DGP90s and I've never had a problem
until now (over a year with no problems). Recently I bought a box of ten
and I got the new Sonys (black exterior box and new Shell design) and in the
sets that failed I was using the new Sonys... However, some of the sets that
my deck didn't fail on were also taped with the new Sonys... my question is,
has anyone had any bad luck with the new Sony DGP90s in a d100/M1?
Additionally, I unpacked all of the tapes at home before hoping on a plane
for Oregon in an effort to conserve battery power... This was the first time
I've ever done that, so I'm wondering if that could have been the reason two
of the sets failed (i.e - after the tapes were unpacked, they sat around
long enough to "stick" together making the d100 have to work extra hard to
run... in two of the sets the tape had tightened too much for the d100 to
record). If anybody can think of any other reason why my deck might just
arbitrarily stop recording I'd love to hear it.
ISOs - I'm hoping to find a few shows as long as I'm posting... If you have
any or all of the below, I'd love to setup a trade with you... Drop me an
email and we can work something out... I have 1000+ hours of Dead, Phish,
SCI, including 100+ masters from all over the country (mostly east coast).

Allman Brothers Band 6/19/98
Allman Brothers Band 8/21/98

FWIW, I've been using the New Sony's for as long as they've been out in
my M1 with no problems. As an aside, I've rarely ever unpacked a tape
at all (unless a B&P'er requested it). I really doubt it has anything
to do with the tapes (I don't have problems with Maxells either).
It may indicate that your deck needs servicing. The transport mechanism
may be sticking or something. I had this problem on a Sharp deck and
it turned out to be that the lubricant on the transport mechanism
had gummed up to the point that it could barely keep the tape in
proper contact. The slightest tension change, etc. would cause it
to unload and quit recording. A good cleaning and relubrication took
care of the problem.
