From: <thebogarts@fuse.net> Subject: ISO: Entry Level Taping setup or D7/D8 Date: Fri, 17 Aug 2001 21:58:22 EDT Greetings all... I'm coming out of lurk mode for a quick request. I introduced my boss to string cheese incident this week, and played a tape of a show for him. Told him about taping, and he got really excited. He was interested in buying a DAT, possibly with mics. Bottom line: I'm looking for a good condition D7 or D8 that should fit his needs at a reasonable cost. Any help? This would be a huge favor to me... it cant ever hurt to surprise the boss... :-) Thanks, Eric Bogart BWTax: First email gets a SHN download of my first soundboard patch - String Cheese Incident 10/20/00

From: andy murray <andyjah420@yahoo.com> Subject: FS: AKG 460b w/CK 61 Date: Fri, 17 Aug 2001 22:10:51 -0700 (PDT) Good evening I have a pair of AKG 460s with the CK 61 cardiods that I am thinking of selling. I am trying to upgrade to a pair of Neumann KM 140s. I have the B-18 phantom power supplies as well as the cases, windscreens and mounts. Everything is in excellent working condition. I am looking to get around $950 or b/o plus shipping costs. Like I said the only reason I am thinking of getting rid of these is wanting to upgrade. I have been very happy with the sound of them. I run them into a Sound Devices MP2 preamp and come out with great results. For people seriously interested I could provide a tape with some samples of shows that I have done. Happy Taping, Andy Murray ===== http://www.tapercities.com/Jambands/andyjah __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? From: Tom McCreadie <mccreadi@simplex.nl> Subject: Ban on all rigs Date: Sat, 18 Aug 2001 15:19:15 +0200 There, that got your attention, didn't it. <g> Does anybody else find that the very word "rig" merits banning as it contributes to an unhealthy mind set?. Consider a recent posting: <<I'm still looking for any "big rig" stealth tapers out there...>> Or an older posting from the archives, throwing down the gauntlet for a toe to toe sonic slugfest: << this is a challenge AKG480hypers>oade248>sbm-1>da-p1 depending on the venue Hypers or Cards PS this is a challenge # for # ,$ for $, show for show, venue for venue, the best all around rig out...(snip)...If you feel confident...(snip).....and want to go toe to toe and we can match venues lets get it on. Or just post the would be contenders >> No squelch intended, and both posters could be trolling, but I wince at suggestions which encourage a simplistic hardware-fixated approach to recording. Going down that macho, pissing-contest route, puts you in the same camp as the likes of PC gaming nerds - "my K6-2 blows your Celeron out of the water" - or teenagers spinning their wheels at traffic lights. To my mind, a common sense holistic approach to recording is called for: - list all quality-impacting candidates along the signal chain - identify and rank the "weak links", which may well _not_ be the hardware - put money/time/effort only into the weak links which we can influence. Start with the simplest/cheapest alterations: perhaps just reading up on stereo recording principles; choosing a more appropriate capsule pattern; beefing up a dinky phantom powering; weighting a wobbly stand etc. With my recordings, non-electronic stuff, mics ranging from highly-esteemed to "cooking variety", I have to concede that a surprising number of the more satisfying efforts came perversely from the lesser mics. Sometimes it was performance-related (Killer Gig slays Killer Rig), or me wearing my lucky underpants, but often it correlated with attention to bread and butter things: early to the venue (or "case it out" on an earlier occasion); more thought to the "sweet spot"; getting air conditioning racket switched off; persuading folks to hold back on last-second coughs at intro's or too-early applause at endings etc. etc. Nonetheless, sloppy technique on a "big rig" should still be preferable to the same sloppy technique on a wannabee rig...right? But people have a host of different opinions on the choice and weighting of the acceptance criteria for bigness. For mics alone it would include: - stereo imaging (itself a dubious concept in a rock show context) - tonal neutrality - faithful reproduction of coloured PA stacks <g> - handling very high spl's - immunity to wind noises, mechanical shock, electromagnetic hum fields - suppression of unwanted ambience - beer-slurping, squealing bimbo's - reproduction of subterranean bass notes etc. etc. And with the criteria sorted out, you still need Bigness refereeing tools: - listen via headphones...which? - or via my good speakers/crappy sitting room - or via your good room/crappy speakers? etc. Anyway, if we pursue this rig hardware-fixation to its logical end, shouldn't we now consider declining to trade for a tape touted as knockout or "crispy" unless the claimant can certify that his recording was evaluated on a "big listening rig"? <g> Tom

From: "Owen O'Neill" <oweno@home.com> Subject: Taping policy at Seattle Bumbershoot Festival? Date: Sat, 18 Aug 2001 10:35:13 -0400 I'm off to Seattle for four fun filled days of caffine overdose and music. Anyone out there know if taping is permitted at any of the Bumbershoot stages or should I plan on all stealth? Reply offline if possible to save bandwidth. I have already searched the archives and couldn't find an answer. Owen O'Neill Rutherford NJ
From: "Owen O'Neill" <oweno@home.com> Subject: Hat recommendation for stealthing Neumann KM184's? Date: Sat, 18 Aug 2001 10:38:45 -0400 I'll be receiving my new mic's in a few days. I believe they're about 7/8" to 1" in diameter and about 4" to 41/2" in length. I'd like to construct a stealth hat but know I'll need somethign taler and with more interior space than the cap I use for my AT853's (which are tiny). Any suggestions or experience to share? I am tall and think the DR. Seuss style hats would stand out to much - looking for somethign more discreet. TIA! Owen O'Neill Rutherford NJ
From: Delano <eagle-winged-palace@home.com> Subject: Josephson vs MBHO mic's Date: Sat, 18 Aug 2001 12:44:51 -0400 The Josephson and MBHO mic's use capsules with similar model numbers. Do these two microphones use the same body (are these the same microphones)? Take Care, Delano http://www.geocities.com/digitaldelano/

From: Kevin Brown <kevin5brown@yahoo.com> Subject: Tascam DA-40 Remote Control Date: Sat, 18 Aug 2001 13:34:26 -0700 (PDT) Is the RC-D45. But it is not wireless. Anybody have it, and know how long the cord is? (Trying to figure out if it will reach from my system to my sofa.) Anybody want to sell me one? :-) Thanks! __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Make international calls for as low as $.04/minute with Yahoo!
