From Arlo's site:
Official Taping Policy: Arlo has often allowed recording by armatures at
venues when and where it is not forbidden or regulated or conflicts in any
way with the usual way things are done.
Bottom line, check with the venue if you need to. Arlo himself is very loose
with this.

I taped them at Waterloo Records in Austin a few months back, semi-stealth,
but Waterloo Records doesn't seem to care. After the show, I asked Chris
Thaile if the band allows taping and he energetically replied that he didn't
mind taping "as long as I don't sell it or make money off of it."
Not an official stance, but certainly from the horses mouth. They are very
approachable, so I wouldn't hesitate to ask if you get the opportunity.
Also, if you do tape and would like to trade shows, that Waterloo Records
In-store is really nice.

Hey All
Just wondering if anyone knows the taping policy for Nickel Creek. They're
coming to Indy in October and wondering if I should even bother to bring my
deck,etc. Thanks for the help!

Did anyone attend and record the Winterhawk Bluegrass (and
Beyond) festival in Hillsdale, NY two weeks ago.
I taped some of it, but could only be in one place at a time and
would love to hear what I missed.
Lots to trade, including the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival from the
week prior.

Subject: D3 line-in overload question
Date: Sun, 19 Aug 2001 19:50:16 -0400 (EDT)
I that the D3 is like the D100/M1/SBM-1 in that it does NOT suffer from the
line in overload problem, because it has a hard-wired (physical) switch to
select between "line in" and "mic in" using the same connector. I have seen
the schematics to all of the Sony portables except the D3.
The D7/D8 selects between line and mic in by using a CMOS analog switch that is
in the signal path continuously. When it switches, the display says "mic in"
when a connector is physically inserted into the mic in jack.
In addition to the slight sonic grain it causes all the time, this electronic
switching scheme overloads a couple dB above the line-input level that will
cause a full-scale indication of 0dBFS with the D7/D8 input knob set to
approximately "4". And worse yet, when you feed it about +4dB over that level,
instead of just clipping cleanly, it overloads with a large "popping" sound.
Perhaps Sony saw this circuit as an "upgrade" for the D7 (and later D8) because
an electronic CMOS switch won't get dirty, scratchy, or intermittant with time;
but they misunderstood how often their consumer portables were actually looked
to +4dBm outputs that can peak up to ~ +24dBM. I doubt you would ever run into
a noticable problem with feeding a D7/8 from most consumer equipment.
I always thought that the D3 sounded slightly better than a D7/8 because of
this, but neither holds a candle to the SBM-1 (or better).

Does anybody know if the Sony D3 line-in suffers from the same problems as
the D7/D8?? ie. the line input will overload when the levels are set below
a certain point. I run MBHO's into a MP-2 pre-amp, and when I had borrowed
a buddies D7 a little while back my tape was filled w/ distortion/noise. I
was informed that this was a known issue w/ the D7/D8 decks, and wanted to
see if anybody knew if the D3 suffered from this same problem??? Thanks in
advance.
Peace,
Dave :)-~

I hate to do this, but getting out of credit card debt is more important
than spinning tapes right now...
Just back from Paul Plotnick at Pro Digital where he gave it a professional
cleaning and tune up, this unit has not even been taken out of the box.
There are less than 100 hours on the unit. A+ bill of health.
Absolutely BABIED in the 2 years that I have had it, this deck has never
even seen a 90m tape and has three full years left on its 5-year extended
warranty.
$400 and I will cover UPS 3-day shipping.
Thanks.

First off, David is probably the most knowledgeable condenser mic maufacturer left in
the States. When I was at Bruel & Kjaer, he certainly had a scientific breadth that
most other domestic mic manufacturers couldnt match.
Regading MBHO's, they were first brought into the US in the late '60's by
Dobbs-Stanford by the late Fred Dobbs in San Carlos. He was subsequently the Crown,
Garrard and Yamaha rep when all these lines were "small fry's". MB was started by an
ex-Schoeps engineer and later, engineers from Beyer joined up. They always had really
nice condenser mics and a GREAT ribbon mic (MB301). These mics were ALWAYS underpriced
but IMHO consistently sounded better than the '84's, 451's AND the Scheops of that
era. When we did some TDS testing of various mics at the local SF-AES Section (open
forum) in'84, the MB's indeed had better freq response AND phase response than the
equivalent Schoeps.
They later ran into financial problems, and split into a loudspeaker and mic division.
I have the highest respect for their products and think they are an undiscovered
jewel. (As a disclosure, we import the Hebden Sound (ex-Calrec) line of Condenser
Mics, so I think of all people, we would be pretty unbiased)
Cheers,
Art Yeap

Subject: Grateful Dead Dats Offer - Round 2
Date: Sun, 19 Aug 2001 21:54:46 -0700
Hi,
This is Round 2 of my Dats for CD blanks offer.
Since 1997 I have traded dats, primarily Grateful Dead. I am converting my
dat collection to cd. This is the 2nd batch. I will not break it up into
smaller batches so please don't ask. Round 2 goes to one person. If
someone wants to get a quick start in the GD dat world this is a great way
to do it.
I'll accept three (3) Taiyo Yuden blanks for each dat. This exchange is
well below current market prices for new dat blanks (as published at various
sites, including TTapes.) I will pay postage to ship the dats to you for
continental US only.
Dats are Maxell labeled, unlabeled, or Sony DDS. Some are 60m, some are
90m. All have printed j-cards with song lists, lineage, etc.. Lineage is
as it was provided to me at the time of trade. Caveat emptor, these are
great tapes, however, they may have the occasional anomaly. I acquired them
primarily through trades on BUDD and other credible sources...
The following 64 shows reside on 50 dats. This in exchange for 150 cdr
blanks. Several shows are filler on tapes. Several of the dats have filler
not listed in this posting.
