From: "James G. Lykos" <guyute@gte.net> Subject: Setting InBox / AD-20 levels on a D8 Date: Sat, 25 Aug 2001 11:08:16 -0400 Hello everybody, I am new to the taping game and am wondering how one sets the levels on the Denecke AD-20 / Zefiro InBox on a Sony D8. Should I set the levels to average out at the 12 dot and not go over 6, or can I utilize the entire window and peak the levels at 0? Any assistance would be great. I am using the optical output on the InBox and going to the 7-pin connector on the D8. Also, does anybody know where to get an adapter for a digital cable with RCA plugs that will let me go from the RCA end to a 1/8" stereo digital connection. Any assistance on these issues is much appreciated. Thanks! --Jamie Lykos jlykos@nc.rr.com
From: "Owen O'Neill" <oweno@home.com> Subject: 48 to 44.1 conversion problem - Cool Edit pro - help! Date: Sat, 25 Aug 2001 11:45:50 -0400 I recorded my first few DAT's at 48khz but have since switched to 44.1 as I convert all to CDR and am a unidecker. I just tried converting a file and have problems. Advice on solutions or alternate methods greatly appreciated! Tried this several ways... in all cases am using Delta DIO 2496 card to accept input. I set the SPDIF sample rate to 48khz in the DIO software, opened a CoolEdit Pro file at specified sample rate of 16 bit 48khz, recorded and saved. I then selected "Adjust Sample Rate" from the toolbar, opted for pre and post filtering and let it run overnight to convert. I saved the completed file and when trying to reopen it in CEP I go the following message: "Output Device Error" "The specified format canot be translated or supported. use the Capabilities function to view supported formats" I have no idea what the capabilities format is but when I try to open the converted file (which does appear to be 44.1khz 16 bit) in other programs such as Winamp or CDWav it either will not open or will not play. On a hunch I tried resaving it as a separate file in the PCM raw data format but my error message still appears. Anyone have ideas on how to resolve this? TIA! Owen O'Neill
From: "Owen O'Neill" <oweno@home.com> Subject: 48 to 44.1 conversion followup question Date: Sat, 25 Aug 2001 12:11:03 -0400 Duh... found the answer to initial problem but now have a new problem. I had neglected to reset sample rate back to 44.1 in the DIO soundcard software. Now that this has been done I can open and play the resampled file but the speed sounds too fast - almost like a tape that was speeded up slightly. Any ideas on why? Based on procedures mentioned in previous post... did I do something incorrectly? Any advice appreciated.

From: "Dan Greenberg" <letitgro@warwick.net> Subject: extra Steve Kimock Band 8/11/01 for B+P Date: Sat, 25 Aug 2001 15:45:27 -0400 This was the late show in the upper ski lodge at the recent Berkfest. It was recorded with DPA 4023s > Lunatec V2 > Sony SBM-1 > Sony D8 with mics attached to a pipe 8' up DFC about 15' from the stage. It is the full show (~108 min.) and recorded on a Sony 90m DAT. It's also one of the first shows with Steve's new bass player. In return, I'd like an unopened Sony or Maxell DAT plus postage.

From: Jason Neely <bondibox@bellsouth.net> Subject: Weak CD levels Reply-To: bondibox@bellsouth.net Date: Sat, 25 Aug 2001 19:06:47 -0400 My audio CDs aren't getting a very loud signal. I normalized the signal during the dump, and the headroom in my capture program (FeltTip Sound Studio) is the same as my DAT. i.e. 0db on the DAT is the max in the program. Certainly I don't want to boost the levels further using my mastering software. Is there a post mastering boost that has more headroom? How do they get such a hot signal onto that CD? -jas apologies for a not-quite-DAT-related-post
