The first thing to do is go get some white Testors model paint. Get yourself a toothpick and a paper towel w/ lighter fluid or something that dissolves paint. (Just in case you get some paint where you don't want it...) Very carefully paint those tiny little slashes on the knobs. That will make it a hell of alot easier to see where your levels are set. I painted my name on the back of mine too. Peaking at ZERO is the optimum, but it's easier said than done. One little touch of the knob makes alot happen. It will take some getting used to. Try to peak at 2. That will give you a little room, just incase it gets louder or there are some sharp peaks. You don't want to go over. Start out by giving a little test when you are ready to run your leader. Check each channel to make sure left is left and right is right. Then turn them up to see if things are balanced. You may notice that one side is a little hotter than the other. This is nothing to worry about, but it is something to keep in mind when taping. Doing this will give you an idea of where you will need to be when the band starts. I usually have them at about 10:00 to start and go from there...... Try to get things evened out right at the beginning of the set and slowly get those levels up there. Best to be conservative and gradual. If you have an opening band that you don't plan on taping, you are golden. Get your levels so they are peaking at about 3 for the opener. The main act is almost always louder. You will find that when the main act gets out there that you may not have to change anything. Sharp quick hits to zero are OK, but nothing more than that. You will get the feel of it. The venue will be a determining factor. Switch your battery after each show. You can get one full show on a battery. Never try to get anymore than that. I run hypercards and I point them just inside the stack or right at the stack depending on the environment. There are many different patterns to try, but I have found that this one works best for my tastes. Always try to run your stand so the mics are in the middle (heart) of the stacks. These people that run low are full of shit (unless they are in stealth mode, of course "). Have your mics right in the center of the stacks vertically. 8' is the lowest. Some bands don't like you to run over head height. When you have to run low, you have to run low. Just deal w/ it. But if you can hoist if you are just behind the SBD vs. running low and being just FOB, it's always better to hoist. The vocals will be better in the mix, you will have less crowd noise, the bass will be tighter and not muddy etc. etc..... The optical out is the way to go. You can get the 1/8" to RCA at Radio Shack. I recommend just getting the adapter plug and not the Y-type wire splitter. They have both, so you could get both. Monster Cable also makes a very nice 1/8" to 2 RCA cable type splitter. Use the optical for yourself (always) and give patches from the 1/8" to RCA. This way, if someone has a bad 7-pin, you will not be effected. If you come out of the 1/8" to RCA and run a splitter from there, you will always be taking the chance that your patcher could mess up your master. Experience has taught me this little fact. I recommend the Denecke PS-1A's for mic power. The AKG B-18's are junk! Stewart are OK, but noisy. The battery in the PS-1A will make it about 5 hours. Do not try to get moe than one show out of a set of batteries in these power supplies or the PS-2. And ALWAYS take extra batteries. Have them ready at all times, just in case. If the red light comes on, try to switchout slowly between songs. Don't panic. You don't need to stop the deck. I have changed batteries in my PS-1A's during music, and you can not hear a thing. Hopefully, this will never happen ") Follow these tips and you will be making phat tapes! Good luck! Darrin From: "James G. Lykos" Subject: Setting InBox / AD-20 levels on a D8 Date: Sat, 25 Aug 2001 11:08:16 -0400 Hello everybody, I am new to the taping game and am wondering how one sets the levels on the Denecke AD-20 / Zefiro InBox on a Sony D8. Should I set the levels to average out at the 12 dot and not go over 6, or can I utilize the entire window and peak the levels at 0? Any assistance would be great. I am using the optical output on the InBox and going to the 7-pin connector on the D8. Also, does anybody know where to get an adapter for a digital cable with RCA plugs that will let me go from the RCA end to a 1/8" stereo digital connection. Any assistance on these issues is much appreciated. Thanks! --Jamie Lykos jlykos@nc.rr.com ------------------------------ From: "Bob Griesel" Subject: About the Warfield . . . Rich ------------------------------ From: Alan Saferstein Subject: Re: Setting InBox / AD-20 levels on a D8 Date: Sun, 26 Aug 2001 12:36:22 -0400 I have an Inbox and for the longest time had issues with the way plugs stick out right next to the knobs. It is very awkward, unless you are a lefty, not to hit or rest your hand on the cables coming out. I solved this buy cutting the RCA end of a sony 7-pin to coax and drilled a hole in the inbox on the side opposite the knobs, and soldered it to the mini-plug coax out connector inside. Now it looks like an SBM-1 with the pigtail sticking out, only mine is over a foot long. Please don't get me wrong, I am not offering to do this, just making suggestions. Len Moskowitz, Core Sound, does a similar mod. He installs a mini-XLR connector on the back of the Inbox, and has a plug-in pigtail. His website may have a photo? http://www.core-sound.com In regards to your specific question, Radio Shack has simple mono 1/8" male to two mono RCA's cable. It's about 6 inches long and lets you plug two decks coax out of the Inbox. I used to use this, until I hard-wired. A rubber band wrapped around the RS cable and then around the inbox will help to make sure it doesn't come out. RS also sells mono 1/8" to mono RCA right angle connectors. This can help with cable routing as well. Make sure you buy mono connectors. I'm always experimenting with this stuff and recently bought a nicely flexible toslink cable with 360 degree swivel right angle connectors. I then bought a toslink barrel connector and plug my Sony 7-pin to Toslink cable into the barrel. Now I don't mind plugging my D7, or mini-disc patchers, in optical because the darn cable is not jutting up out of the Inbox, instead it lays off to the side very nicely, right along with the mic cables. It's a lot of cable, but easy enough to roll up and tuck away. Hope this Helps, Alan ================================================ From: "James G. The latter, just changes the sample rate your assigned to the file, but doesn't actual convert the file to the new sample rate. Hence the sped up sound you heard. BTW, when going 48->44.1 you will want to use the Pre/Post Filter. I had neglected to reset sample rate back to 44.1 in the DIO soundcard software. Now that this has been done I can open and play the resampled file but the speed sounds too fast - almost like a tape that was speeded up slightly. Any ideas on why? Based on procedures mentioned in previous post... did I do something incorrectly?
