Subject: FLOWER KINGS U.S. TOUR DATES -- go check 'em out!!!! :)
Date: Sun, 26 Aug 2001 22:46:31 -0700
I have been listening to this great band for just over
a week now, and I am totally hooked!!!! They are The
Flower Kings from Sweden and are doing a fairly rare
tour of the US. Definitely one to check out!!! :)
8/31 Variety Playhouse, Atlanta GA
9/1 Prog Day Storybook Farm, Chapel Hill, NC
9/2 The American Theatre, Hampton VA
9/4 The Bottom Line, New York NY
9/5 North Star Bar, Philadelphia PA
9/6 Middle East Cafe, Cambridge MA
9/7 Club Metronome, Burlington VT
9/8 Heavy Metal Sound Studios, North Plainfield, NJ
9/10 Rosebud, Pittsburgh PA
9/11 The Magic Bag, Detroit MI
9/12 The Barrel House, Cincinnati OH
9/14 Shank Hall, Milwaukee WI
9/15 JJ Kelly's, Lansing, IL
I would definitely classify them in the "neo-prog"
genre, but if you dig old-style Yes, ELP, Genesis, or
Gentle Giant, this is the band for you! They even
have a mellotron player! :)
Styles range from soft jazz-rock to heavy, hard-
pounding 7/8 progressive pounding of the mind. All the
while, underlying themes from fantasy to medieval to
modern reality ride along the colorful musical
landscapes vividly painted by Roine Stolt and
company's strokes of genius.
I couldn't put it more poetically. Definitely the
best of the "neo-prog" bands I've heard in a LONG,
LONG TIME! They will definitely take you to another
world.
Anyway, looking for anybody who'd be willing to tape
any of the above shows.
Not sure of their actual taping policies, so if any
European DAT-Heads know anything, please let myself or
the list know. Otherwise, you may need to use your
stealths.
Please email me privately and we can set up a trade
after the tour. If we get enough shows covered, maybe
we can do a Flower Kings tape tree or something.
But PLEASE, do a favor for yourself and the future of
progressive rock and see this awesome band! Tis' my
first time seeing them too, but from past boots and
reviews I've heard, they are ONE FOR THE AGES!!!
Check out their site at:
http://www.users.wineasy.se/flowerkings/
Thanks for the space! Again, lemme know if you can do
any of these shows.
Peace and prog,
Brian

FIY, the inbox is rated at 8-9 hours of use on a single 9v Alkaline.
IMHO changing the battery every show is a little extreme and wasteful.
Although I've never run it continuously for that length of time I have
used it for 3 90-120 minute shows in a two week period.

Subject: Levels. RMS values are the key, IMO.
Date: Mon, 27 Aug 2001 08:41:56 -0600
When I'm mastering a show, I usually bring the wave up in Goldwave or
similar editing software, and then select all of the wave and click on
"maximize" which then finds the maximum level and the RMS value for the
entire wave. The RMS value, if it's around .030 is too low, and can be
increased without danger of clipping the highest peaks. (In general--this
is usually not true for non-musical field recordings and acoustic
performances taped from some distance from the source; the average RMS
will be much lower, and cannot be increased without compressing or soft
clipping the wave.) I then increase the RMS to a value like .100 or .110
and leave it there. ALWAYS process the entire show/wave/event as one unit,
as opposed to any individual part of the wave, and check portions of the
wave that appear to be clipping or clipped, and be prepared to UNDO the
increase of RMS value to save those peaks. Some on DATheads say that such
clipping is OK as long as it's only occasionally, but I prefer to never
clip, even in the case of nearby audience claps--instead using a "soft
clip" on only those passages, then maximizing or increasing the RMS value
of the entire wave.
A CDR that you receive that has low levels is another issue. First rip the
audio using Exact Audio Copy in secure mode, then join the .wav files using
(HELP! I don't know of any joining program. I have to cut/paste each wave
into one file, which is very time-consuming.) a joining software. This
entire wave can be treated without destroying the dynamic accuracy of the
event, if you're careful. As has been stated often on this list, NEVER
simply select "normalize" in your CDR burning software, as this will really
mess up your listening experience, as each track will jump to a different
level, based on its RMS value--and it's nearly impossible for the next
trader to correct this problem.
Commercial recordings are equalized and compressed to the point that the
RMS values will be easily double that of more dynamic shows you have on
DAT. Leave those dynamics in the recording and get a compressor in your
home stereo audio chain (I use the Really Nice Compressor, by FNC(?) and it
makes DAUD tapes tolerable without altering the actual archival
recording). I got mine from Mercenary Audio out in New York somewhere, and
it's worked quite well.

You will need to use a special optical cable with the 3.5mm or

I just ordered some new NiMH 1700 mAh batteries from http://mahaenergy.com
They also have 'kits' with chargers and 1600 mAh batts, but no kits (yet)
with the 1700s. Additionally, they have a battery pack that is/was designed
to be an external power source for digital cameras. Specs say that it
supplies 6V, so with the right connector, perhaps it could be used for a
DAT? I think it was $50.
No affiliation whatsoever... just thought this might be of interest. And
thank you to everyone that emailed me about testing the D8-- I forgot the
Golden Rule-- RTFA! Read The F*$#%n' Archives! Additionally, it had recently
been covered, but that must have been the Digest I skipped! Thanks again,
everyone!

Date: Mon, 27 Aug 2001 11:09:00 -0400
This was at Jones Beach and featured appearances by
DJ Logic (in the bass/drums part) and Rob Barraco (in
"The Wheel") It was recorded with DPA 4023s > Lunatec
V2 > Sony SBM-1 > Sony D8. It is the full show (~110 min.)
and recorded on a KAO 60m DAT.
In return, I'd like a sealed blank Sony or Maxell 60 or 90m DAT
plus postage. But here's the hitch...I will give it to the person
who promises to make the most B+Ps to others who ask.
So tell me how many B+Ps you're willing to make (and mention
Ratdog 8/15/01). If you offer to make the most copies, I will
then direct other inquiries your way for you to deal with.
(Unideckers, don't be hesitant to ask for this, as you might get lucky.)
The offer will close 48 hours after the digest hits my inbox.

Subject: Sound Forge XP vs Cool Edit
Date: Mon, 27 Aug 2001 13:24:07 -0400
Hi
I've been using SF XP4.5h for my normalizing and sound editing and
resampling. Now I hear that many of you are using Cool Edit or Cool Edit
Pro. I wonder if I am missing out on something.
I have some disgruntlements with SF; for example it seems to have a 2gb file
size limit for work files and therefor I cannot do much with a WAV of an
entire 3+hr show without splitting the file first. I don't like this. And
SF is painfully slow in everything from opening a file, saving, and
processing.
Would you recommend CoolEdit over SF? And does the Pro version have more
that is worth the price?
Thanks
