CEP is optimized, however, to do most disk functions as fast as possible. The 2GB limitation is bascially a Windows '98 issue. Windows NT allows 4GB files. Not sure about Windows XT/2000/etc. The main advantage to CEP over non-Pro is that CEP allows you to listen to most effects in realtime, ie, you can actually change EQ, etc, and hear what it will sound like without first doing the effect, listening, and maybe undoing. It doesn't quite work as well as analog gear - as you change sliders, you have to let go of the mouse button before the change takes effect. But it's a very nice feature. Also, CEP has more special features built-in, such as Notch Filter (removes feedback), etc. But the great Cool Edit "Noise Reduction" feature is in both versions. --G ------------------------------ From: "Gary Davis" Subject: Re: anti-distortion filter Reply-to: gdavis@loop.com Date: Mon, 27 Aug 2001 14:09:29 -0700 If the distortion is digital cliping, and NOT analog brickwalling, Cool Edit Pro has a feature called "Clip Restortion" (under Noise Reduction) which will most definately help! --Gary ------------------------------ From: Chinascats@aol.com Subject: Tony Furtato taping policy Date: Mon, 27 Aug 2001 17:09:31 EDT I saw that Tony Furtato is playing in San Jose Tuesday night and I might go. Does anyone know his taping policy with board patches? I'm thinking of bringing my deck with me. I am especially wondering if anyone is interested in taping Meshell Ndegeocello's set on saturday. i am willing to send out some blank dats, trade for a copy, do dat transfers etc etc etc if someone can tape her set. If anyone is interested please let me know. thanks - todd ------------------------------ From: "Larry Narachi" Subject: Cheap battery pack for the D8/M1 Date: Mon, 27 Aug 2001 14:33:30 -0700 From: "John McGuire" >I just ordered some new NiMH 1700 mAh batteries from http://mahaenergy.com >They also have 'kits' with chargers and 1600 mAh batts, but no kits (yet) >with the 1700s. Additionally, they have a battery pack that is/was designed >to be an external power source for digital cameras. Specs say that it >supplies 6V, so with the right connector, perhaps it could be used for a >DAT? I think it was $50. I have used this battery pack numerous times. Its my emergency pack when my lead acid ecocharge runs out or if another taper runs out. I also use it to power some coolneon "go away from here" wire... There is a little battery level indicator series of LED lights that light up when you test for remaining life...which is nice. This pack is about the size of a small pager..... Larry Narachi "taperachi" ------------------------------ From: "DRider" Subject: Zefiro-Denecke-Inbox Date: Mon, 27 Aug 2001 17:38:42 -0400 I don't recommend pushing a 9v Alkaline to 8-9 hours in the Inbox. Experience is the best teacher. The first time you look down and see the red light on during music and you have No Input because you did not change your batteries, you will get the experience that I am speaking of........... If taping a standard 2 set show (like PLQ for instance), I recommend changing the 9v Alkaline at the end of the show. Start w/ a fresh one for the next show. I don't push mine over 6 hours. If you wanna try to squeeze every bit of power out of a battery, I suggest getting a meter and checking the voltage of the battery after noting how many hours it has been used. You can mark the side of the battery w/ the voltage amount. You might squeeze 3 sets out of one battery if you take it out during the breaks. Of course, you will need to keep these things in mind during the show. Taking great care not to forget to switchout. All kinds of variables come into play, like indulging a little too much and spacing out, talking to your buddy and spacing out or just taking a restroom break only to find yourself scrambling to your seat because the band is back on stage... Like I said, experience is the best teacher. Also, quality control w/ batteries means your mileage may very....... DRider ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From: Adam Smith Subject: Re:Zefiro-Denecke-inbox Reply-To: adaml@lanset.com Date: Mon, 27 Aug 2001 00:28:13 -0700 FIY, the inbox is rated at 8-9 hours of use on a single 9v Alkaline. IMHO changing the battery every show is a little extreme and wasteful. Although I've never run it continuously for that length of time I have used it for 3 90-120 minute shows in a two week period. Adam ------------------------------ From: "Dan Greenberg" Subject: extra Robert Randolph & Wild Magnolias 6/30/01 on one DAT for B+P Date: Mon, 27 Aug 2001 18:19:56 -0400 These are the complete (57 minute) sets of each band at this year's Gathering of The Vibes. They were recorded from the soundboard > Sony SBM-1 > Sony D8. Both sets were recorded onto one Sony 90m DAT. In return, I'd like a sealed blank Sony or Maxell 90m DAT plus postage. But here's the hitch...I will give it to the person who promises to make the most B+Ps to others who ask. So tell me how many B+Ps you're willing to make (and mention B+P 6/30/01). If you offer to make the most copies, I will then direct other inquiries your way for you to deal with. (Unideckers, don't be hesitant to ask for this, as you might get lucky.) The offer will close 48 hours after the digest hits my inbox. -Dan Greenberg- ------------------------------ From: "scott charles" Subject: looking to upgrade rig Date: Mon, 27 Aug 2001 22:43:51 ok, I'm looking to upgrade my stealth recording setup - looking at: neumann 184's (X-Y in hat)(is X-Y the crossed?) denecke zefiro inbox (down leg) denecke sp-2 phantom power supply (down other leg or in pocket) currently into a sharp mt-77 (rather upgrade the mics than the recorder right now). Anyone use any of the input ends? How heavy/free am I going to be able to move around? The 184's are like the 140's without the removable stages, right? How are the 184's from a distance? I've listened to some good recordings done stealth with these mics (and the 140's) and I really like the way they sound. As a test with the MD recorder, I recorded digitally a track from the cd-r to the MD, I can't tell the difference, no artifacts. opinions? _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ From: Tom McGee Subject: RE: Sound Forge XP vs Cool Edit Date: Mon, 27 Aug 2001 18:51:56 -0400 -- said: " Would you recommend CoolEdit over SF? And does the Pro version have more that is worth the price? " There are several other choices to consider. For two track editing, I like Wavelab 3.x over all of them. This includes SF 5.0, Protools, Cool Edit Pro, Bias Peak, SoundEdit II, Logic (Delta), Audio Desk, and any other I've bought and tried. (Yeah, I'm a cross-platform guy.) I went a little overboard buying new gear. I have the following gear for sale. I would like to sell the entire rig to one person, so if anyone is interested in the whole lot they will get first crack. I will entertain offers for each section separately, but I will wait for five days to see if there is any interest in the entire rig. I will cover USPS priority insured mail, if the buyer wants FedEx or USPS Next Day Air they will cover the difference. I will accept payment by (postal or AmEx)money order, cashier's check, or personal check. The Crabby Appleton is a different level (higher) and less compressed (probably not at all, probably a SBD). My problem is that I know nothing about Crabby Appleton! My notes on the DAT read: "Chuck Berry performed with the band, Crabby Appleton supported him during his performance. Crabby Appleton also did a set of their own in the middle [sic] of Berry's performance. This concert was transmitted live over WNCR-fm Cleveland, OH. One of the early live transmissions of a local rock concert in Cleveland. Berry's language and lyrics shocked the listeners but his music rocked them away..." Can anyone support the veracity of these notes and/or this recording? I've got a Sony D8 and an M-Audio CO3. I hooked up one D8 to the TOSLink input of the CO3 and set the SCMS mode to 'None'. I connected the TOSLink output to the input of the other D8. I tried to clone from a master DAT (SCMS 11) with this arrangement, but the recording D8 would not unpause with the selected SCMS mode set to "none" on the CO3. I tried Master and 1st Gen modes on the CO3, but same result. The recording D8 would not unpause in record mode. The only way I could get it to record was if I set the CO3 SCMS mode to pass-through. I have noticed this when trying to record from a CD through the CO3. I have not been able to find any documentation on this problem, and the symptoms lead me to believe that there may be something wrong with my CO3. Very frustrating!!! -Ethan ------------------------------ ** FOR YOUR REFERENCE ** To unsubscribe from this digest, please send email to dat-heads-unsubscribe@datheads.phish.net If your email address has changed, you may (optionally) send the message to dat-heads-unsubscribe-oldaddress=olddomain@datheads.phish.net and the old address will be removed.
