From: Martin Amdur <gmst@sympatico.ca> Subject: re: D8 and CO3 SCMS Problem Date: Tue, 28 Aug 2001 15:36:31 -0400 I had a similar yet different problem. I worte about this before but no one answered. I ran a D3 out of my CO3 and selected no SCMS and got a recording with emphasis. Wierd hunh? Martin "I hooked up one D8 to the TOSLink input of the CO3 and set the SCMS mode to 'None'. I connected the TOSLink output to the input of the other D8. I tried to clone from a master DAT (SCMS 11) with this arrangement, but the recording D8 would not unpause with the selected SCMS mode set to "none" on the CO3. I tried Master and 1st Gen modes on the CO3, but same result. The recording D8 would not unpause in record mode. The only way I could get it to record was if I set the CO3 SCMS mode to pass-through." From: Adam Smith <adaml@lanset.com> Subject: Inbox Reply-To: adaml@lanset.com Date: Tue, 28 Aug 2001 13:05:29 -0700 Wow, judging from all the responses I received I must be one of the few people who can get more than 2-3 hours of battery life while using the inbox with a 9v. As I said in my previous post I swap them out every 6-7 hours. That's just my preference. This is the time the battery is activated in the unit not the length of the show. I also write this time on the batt and then figure in time between use and load test it. I've never had the low batt indicator come on during a show. After 6-7 hours these are used for band practices or situations where you can back up when the batt indicator lights. Come on folks this unit only pulls 50mA. I'm not sure what the voltage must drop to or how long the unit will operate properly while the low batt led is on. Perhaps Len M could shed some light on all of this. Adam
From: "Dan Greenberg" <letitgro@warwick.net> Subject: illegal sales of bootleg site closed down Date: Tue, 28 Aug 2001 16:36:25 -0400 Sometime last week somebody posted about the following site selling bootlegs: http://www.dowco.com/jgwilson/index.html I not only wrote to that jgwilson person, but to the hostmaster @dowco.com. I just received the following response from the hostmaster: The account has been closed and will not be hosted on dowco.com. Mike Leeson Wahoo! The good guys win! To all others who may have also written, good work! -Dan Greenberg-
From: Paul Loeber <paulparrot@neo.rr.com> Subject: beware of noise reduction Date: Tue, 28 Aug 2001 17:18:37 -0400 Concerning the recent post about noise reduction in CoolEdit, SoundForge, and the like: There have been lots of enjoyable recordings ruined by people not knowing what they are doing with processing tools. To make it worse, the people who don't know what they are doing with noise reduction tools, parametric EQ, filters, and so forth--these people don't know that they don't know what they are doing. But for what it's worth, you are liable to mess up the sound of whatever recording you are fooling with. Professionals often wreck things that they put on CDs--you should not make the same mistakes that they do. Leave your original tape alone. It is impossible to take out noise without messing with the music, period. And if you use a notch filter, other frequencies will be damaged too. The best thing to do is pretend that these tools are not even in your programs. They should not be used. If someone wants to fool with a CDR of it later to make it sound right on his own stereo, then he can use his tone controls. But that's just playback, and no irreparable harm is done.
From: Rich Mays <richmays@home.com> Subject: Neumann 184 v.140 Reply-To: richmays@home.com Date: Tue, 28 Aug 2001 17:44:51 +0000 > The 184's are like the 140's without the removable stages, > right? The 184s are a little brighter and don't have the "guts" of the 140. Subtle differences in magnitude, but definitely different. > looking at: > neumann 184's (X-Y in hat)(is X-Y the crossed?) Real X-Y (crossed at 90 degrees) can sound rather monophonic at a distance. Hypercardioids at 110 degrees gives more channel separation. Otherwise, DIN (20cm separation between capsules) or NOS (30cm spacing) works better with cardioids. In my opinion. Rich

From: "Dan Greenberg" <letitgro@warwick.net> Subject: P.S. illegal sales of bootlegs site closed down Date: Tue, 28 Aug 2001 19:07:18 -0400 I guess I spoke to soon, as I just received this email from the hostmaster of dowco.com: "Thank you for informing us of this issue. The site has been reinstated until we receive clarification from our counsel." Mike Leeson This is the site I'm referring to: http://www.dowco.com/jgwilson/index.html The following is what I had written to the hostmaster: "This guy is selling illegal bootleg recordings!" Don't know if it would help, but perhaps a few others can write to the hostmaster. The email addy is: hostmaster@dowco.com -Dan Greenberg-
From: Gordon Gidluck <gidluck@swbell.net> Subject: (was) RE: Cool Edit Pro vs. Sound Forge Date: Tue, 28 Aug 2001 21:21:03 -0500 Gary, A further comment on the 2gb limit. This is due to the design of wav files. The counters in the WAV header are 32-bit signed integer values. I don't see how or why NT would be different with respect to this. Samplitude 5.9 will support up to 2 billion stereo samples (or about 10 hours at 48kHz). This is a new feature. The way that they do this is by having their HDP data structure manage multiple WAV files slightly smaller than 2gb each. For anyone out there who may be interested... version 6 is about to be released and is a free upgrade to purchasers of 5.9 I am not a dealer for SEKD or Magix, I just use and like their software. If you go to www.magix.com you can download a 90 day demo of SAMP Version 6, but you have to register. Hello D>AtheA>Ds: If anyone is interested in doing some batch processing in Win95/98/ME/NT/2000 I have a program which joins WAV files using a scripting language. I just converted it to work under Windows as a 32-bit application, so it now has support for long filenames. I originally released a 16-bit version for DOS about 2 years ago. I have since lowered the price to $10 with the release of the Windows version. It is a good deal for anyone wishing to join files in batch. I have used it on literally thousands of files, and it works. It can add spacing, fix wav headers, and some other stuff. More info is at my web pages. The link is http://www.shoptheozarks.com/GGM/wavscript.html BTW, if anyone is interested in doing this in Linux let me know -- I would like to hear from you. Gordon Gidluck

I don't know of any joining > program. I have to cut/paste each wave into one file, which is > very time-consuming.) a joining software. CoolEditPro can merge 2 or more .wav files: "File>Open Append" (make sure to select the .wav files on the correct order). This function can be very handy to fix those CDRs that were burned TAO *trembles* or even CDRs whose tracks weren't properly broken on the CD sector boundaries (which will cause small ticks between tracks). I think many of us ignored this on our first DAT>CDR transfers. CEP will create cuesheets on the points where the several .wav files were merged together so you zoom in directly to the place you'll want. Other than CEP I know of a small shareware program called AddAWave. EAC can also create one big wave file from the audio tracks while DAEing ("Action>Copy Image..."), so I think you're missing something here... From: "Jamie Lutch" <reconstruction@thegrid.net> Subject: joining wavs Date: Tue, 28 Aug 2001 21:18:30 -0700 shntool can do it for wavs or shns, and works under win2k (where addawav doesnt): http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dankseeds/files/SHNTOOL_Stuff/ does a bunch of other cool stuff too, like analyzing wavs and shns for sector boundary issues, . Make sure you get doshere.zip as well, great utility for command line software like shntool. -JL
From: Jesse Lackey <jesse@celestialaudio.com> Subject: Roland UA-30 USB - subtle dropouts on digital transfers Date: Wed, 29 Aug 2001 01:18:22 -0400 Hi all, I just got a UA-30, am using it with Windows 2000 sp2, and doing a bit-for-bit compare of multiple recordings from the same DAT tape (done digitally) yields mismatches. Consistently I'm getting 1920 byte dropouts. This happens with two different tapes, using both Soundforge 4.5 XP and cool edit pro LE (which shipped with the box). It happens within the first few seconds - doesn't take long to get a dropout. (They are inaudible but provably present) Has anyone out there done bit for bit compares of digital transfers from the UA-30? I suppose it is conceivable that it is the DAT deck... I'll try another deck tomorrow. As well as fiddling with the recording options (# buffers, size of buffers) in cool edit & soundforge. But I don't have much hope. This is very very disappointing! Otherwise it seems like a great little device. Any windows 2000 configuration tips? The laptop is a PII 400 w/128Mb. This is such a low-bandwidth, low-cpu operation that I should be able to encode mpegs while doing the transfer. I miss the days of the zefiro za-1, DOS, and a 486-100. Was totally reliable.... tho $1100 for a 3gb harddrive back then kinda hurt. :) Advice? Comments? Thanks in advance. Jesse
