the Philips CDR 765. Any thoughts on where I might find one for cheaper than

I agree with the fellow who posted previously about the
Flower Kings. Possibly the pick of the litter of all the
so called neo-prog bands. I won't be able to addend the
North Star Bar show in Phila. on 9-5 but my son will be
going and hopefully recording. I raised this boy right!

I have the SKM140 set and I've never actually measured the active cables
but they are way too long for my needs. I'm guessing they are 12-15ft.
I believe different lengths are available, although I wasn't presented
with this option when I bought the set. The cables are small diameter,
so it's easy to roll them up with a velcro cable tie and then easily
conceal them. I'm not really sure why they are so long - I occasionally
see people use them with their 140's on a stand at a taping-allowed
show...can't see why you would bother doing this unless you just wanted
to use the ORTF or XY bars that come with them, as they only attach to
the capsules when the actives are attached. I always run my 140s with
capsules and bodies attached at taping-allowed shows, and thus just have
a good set of 12'-15' XLR cables between my mics and pre-amp. I would
much rather the actives be in the 4-5' range for the times I really need
them.

A couple of recent posts have got me wondering. One questions the hardware
approach to better sounding recordings, while another praises Josephson
microphones as being as good or better than Schoeps.
As a newbie with an M1 and omnis, I have made some very listenable
recordings, but I wonder where I should invest to get better sound;
microphones, cables, preamp/power supply, A/D convertor? Do you really get
much benefit if only one part of the chain is upgraded? Has anybody
upgraded and been disappointed with what they got for their money?
I did a lot of work as a photographer in college, and the equipment you
could afford sometimes determined whether you got a good photo, a crappy
photo, or no photo. That being said, a Tamron lens with the same spec as a
Nikon lens could cost half as much and one would be hard pressed to see a
difference in a side by side comparison of the photos.
Am I comparing apples and oranges here? Are there some good performing
recording components that won't push a rig over $5K?

Mine are approx 3 meters (about 10 feet) but I have the lemo
quick-release connectors between the bodies and the caps. The new ones
don't come that way, you have to get it custom I think, although Neumann
will do it for you. Neumann's webpage said that as long as the active
cables are under 300 feet there shouldn't be any loss, so I guess that
they will make them any length for you.

I've been using WavMerge (current version: WavMerge2.1) for a
few weeks now, and have no complaint with it. As many other
people, I'm using this to correct for TAO- and incorrectly tracked
filed with silence filling out the last frame. After getting
rid of the silent spots, merge the files and re-split with CDWave
using a cue sheet. Fairly slick. I don't have a URL for the
WavMerge program any more, but it was easy to find by searching
on "WavMerge" at Google or Altavista or some such search engine,

Jesse, make sure dma is enabled with win2k, its a real pain sometimes.
get a benchmarking utility, SiSoft sandra is a good free one. It will tell
you right away if your drive is using dma. Also, if your cpu utility is
verty high when writing to that disc, thats another sure sign dma is not
enabled.

Who runs hypers outside? XY pattern? Is there that big of a difference in
running them opposed to cards in an XY pattern? (I run cards in an XY at 110
degrees when outside. I have not had a chance to experiment with different
techniques yet.) Just wondering what/why people are running their stuff the
