Forgive me if this has been asked before, but I
looked all through the list archive adn FAQ, but
haven't found an answer.
I've been taping on MD for over a year now, and I'm
looking into upgrading to a portable DAT unit. The
problem is that I live in Toronto, and haven't been
able to find any DAT dealers in Canada. All dealers
I've found are in the US, and with exchange, duties
and taxes, any unit is well over $1000 CDN. I'm
looking for an decent entry level DAT, something like
a PCM-M1, TCD-D8 or TCD-D100.
Does anybody have any suggestions where I could
possibly get one without paying an arm and a leg ?
Thanks for any help.

Subject: Laptop Recording Info
Date: Thu, 30 Aug 2001 12:03:36 -0500
Not exactly DAT-related.......
Back in June, I purchased a Digigram VX-Pocket and
SONY VAIO PCG-C1VSX/K to
record with. This is similar to the US version, but
it has more power all around and is from SONY Japan
through http://www.dynamism.com/c1vsx/index.shtml
(Got a great deal, cheaper than what the website
says, they are willing to deal)
(667 CPU,256 SDRAM,30 GIG,512 CACHE+Bluetooth)
Once the Jap software had been stripped off and the
English version put on, I started working on setting
up for recording.
Instead of going the route that others had and
wiping the hard drive and building from scratch, I
was short on time before I left to take it on the
road. I simplified everything, removed all uneeded
apps, config the power settings, etc.. and then
loaded the software. I set up Sounforge 5.0b for
recording and editing. CD Wave for tracking, MKW for
SHN'ing, and Nero for burning. I bought a SONY
CRX1600L Firewire 12x external CDRW burner, a D.Link
Ethernet card, and all is good. Once I had the
system set up like I wanted, the recording was a
breeze. No problems with recording at all. In all
formats everything checks out. This is all running
on ONE operating system, WIN200pro. So it goes to
show you, someone with limited knowledge can set one
of these up without too many worries. My theory is,
if you are going to use a very expensive laptop to
record with, you need to know how to configure it
yourself. Not to knock any of the turnkey programs,
because that is a wonderful and relatively foolproof
and time saving method. I had the time and needed
the knowledge, so I went for it and it wasn't that
difficult. I recorded about 20 shows this summer
while on the road, and about 20 at home since I
returned. Only the first couple had any problems,
and those were all my fault. Live and Learn.
I have a couple of questions for any other Vaio and
Win200pro users.
Where is the setting control for the items in the
system tray?. I cannot seem to find it. It's
probably right under my nose, but I'll be damned if
I can find it. Tired of looking, so I ask the
experts.
1. What ASPI drivers are yall using? I have tried
the LSI Logic drivers and others but cannot seem to
find exactly the right one to get all the CDR
software I want to work correctly. CDRWIN doesn't
like NERO and NERO doesn't like EASYCD CREATOR. I
have not installed the crappy EASYCD and want to try
and avoid that, but it seems the driver almost has
to be the Adaptec one, but it conflicts with Nero,
so I dunno. Remember, I have EIDE Firewire CDRW to
contend with, which complicates the issue even more.
I'm setting up my desktop exactly the same way and
having the same problems on it too.
EAC will not recognize the Firewire CDR using any
version on any machine, and neither will CDRWIN.
Anyone that has found an easy solution to this,
please fill me in.
2. While I'm at it, what CDR software are most of
you using for perfect audio burns? Nero seems to put
in very tiny clicks intermittingly, and EASY CD
sucks, CDRWIN is ok, but I would like something that
has a better interface and flexibility as well as
reliability. Any suggestions?
3. I tried hooking up the desktop and the VAIO to
their firewire ports to see how that worked, it
didn't.
Hardware wizards pop up wanting to install PC 1394
hardware, but it can't find a driver for it, so it
disables. I'm sure there is a easy solution for
connecting 2 PC's together via firewire. Again, any
solutions?
4. For the last few years I have been using Cool
Edit Pro v1.2 for editing because it is so much
faster than Soundforge, not as reliable but easier
interface to use. I still like to use it for
cut/pastes, quick multitrack edits, level boosting,
and such. When I installed it on 2000 it was giving
error prompts and shutting down after a few minutes
when you would stop/start playing from different
locations, this was occurring intermittingly and
with
the newer version (1.2a) that I tried too. It was
having the same problems on both machines set up
almost identical to each other. Seems to be software
related, but can't isolate exactly what is causing
this, any ideas?
5. Since I can't get Cool Edit working right, and
Soundforge is SO slow for editing, are there any
other great progs out there that do the editing
quickly and reliably with a nice interface to use.
Multitrack is key, because I like overlaying the
tracks a few seconds sometimes on mixed CD's for
friends. I've Heard about Wavelab 3.0 by Steinberg,
but haven't tried it and don't know about it's
WIN2000 compatibility.
Ok, that's enough questions for now. I have really
been enjoying recording with the laptop. Taping has
become really fun to me again, and that's a blessing
because I was starting to get burn out, and the Vaio
has fixed that. The future of taping has nothing to
do with tape. Thanks for the help Later, Phil

Yes. Neutrik offers them, the part number will
generally have "RC" in it (and -B for black/gold
or w/o means silver colored housing). Example
"NC3MRC-B" is cable-end, 3-pin male, right-angle,
balack w/o gold contacts.
> anyone know where to score these??
Markertek.com will sell individual plugs and for a
small additional fee you can specify this termination
on any cables they make. Any larger electronics
mail-order catalog which offers Neutrik connectors
will likely have right-angle. Your local pro-audio
shop may or may not.

I bought this deck used a couple years ago to feed DATs to my ZA2. I had
it serviced by Paul at ProDigital when I bought it and put about 50 hours
on it. I went to load a DAT a couple weeks ago and discovered that
mysteriously, the tape tray/door would not close all the way to load the
tape. I have no idea how this happened; it may be trivially easy to fix
or may not, but I couldn't figure it out after a few minutes of playing
around with it and decided to move on... I have replaced it with a D5 and
would like to sell it. I don't have a manual but did buy a remote that
comes from a different Sony model but works fine with it.
Asking $100 plus shipping. Use it for parts, fix it yourself or get it
fixed professionally.

In order of importance: location; mics and placement (XY, ORTF, etc.);
preamp; A/D converter; cables. One might quibble about the order of the
last three. Upgrading any part is usually audible, but upgrading stuff
closer to the top of the list helps more, so it's best to start there unless
you have a very good reason not to.

Come up with a useful definition of what "good" means to you and I'm sure
lots of listers can help. Other folks' equipment preferences won't help
unless they have the same ears and listen to the same music as you.

The cables that come with the set are 5m (meters, hey, these things *are*
made in Europe); Neumann also sells a 10m active cable. I have the 10m
actives and the only thing I don't like about them is the fact that
there's just so damn much to wrap when you've got 10 meters of wire (about
25 feet or so.) Right now I've got most of the cable wrapped with velcro
ties, with a little loose at either end that I wrap with another velcro
tie around the whole bundle. This gives me just enough for normal
applications (ORTF on a 10' stand), and if I ever need or want to run
split, I can pull the other velcro tie off.

With all the CEP and Sound Forge talk in recent days I was wondering if
anyone could shed some light on the alternatives for doing the recording
from DAT > PC.
Currently I'm using the 14 day demo of Samplitude 2496 that does the real
time resampling 48 kHz > 44.1. But with the hefty price tag and 12 days left
in the demo I'm searching for an alternative. Are there any shareware
recording apps people have created to cover this process (or web pages that
detail out options available?) I'd be open to any suggestions here, thanks
for the bandwidth.

John R. Vanderpool asks about finding peaks & normalizing audio
files on Unix.
The open-source Sox utility can do a bunch of utility processing on
audio files. Sox supposedly also supports aiff files, but I haven't tried
that feature.
This shell script does the trick for me:
#!/bin/csh
#
# Normalize1wav
# [gfc] Normalize the volume of one wav file.
#
set vol = `sox $1 -e stat -v |& cat -`
echo $1 needs volume adjustment factor of $vol
if ( "$vol" != "1.000" ) then
echo adjusting $1
sox -v $vol $1 adjustedfile.wav
mv -f adjustedfile.wav $1
endif
exit
Sox can be found at: http://home.sprynet.com/~cbagwell/sox.html
I also use Sox to resample digital audio files that I create with a
DAT feeding into a Linux box with a Zoltrix Nightengale card:
sox -V -r 48000 $1 -r 44100 $1.44k.wav
