From: "John McGuire" <john@safesets.com> Subject: 'C' cell NiCds, Great Big Sea Reply-To: <john@safesets.com> Date: Thu, 30 Aug 2001 20:51:19 -0500 I have 12 'C' cells with wire tabs, made by Energizer. They are from a 14v cordless screwdriver battery (which I broke and replaced with an 18v unit- the screwdriver, not the battery pack). Anyway, they could be put to good use by someone with a soldering iron and some wire, and made into a battery pack. You are on your own for a charger tho. I would LOVE to trade them for ANY recordings of Great Big Sea, the Newfoundland celtic/folk/rock band-- the wife has FINALLY taken an interest in some live music, and wouldnt ya know it-- nobody's ever heard of them! Otherwise-- free to good home in exchange for $$ to cover shipping. From: "DRider" <Hawkwind@mediaone.net> Subject: Re: Upgrade rant Date: Thu, 30 Aug 2001 22:01:15 -0400 Todd, I did not really consider your post a rant.... Be that as it may. I think that most would agree that your mics are the most important component to your "rig". As far as something being better than something else..... Part of that concept is purely biased or opinion-based. While it IS true that certain components are "better" than others, when you start getting into high end equipment it turns into a matter of preference. Once you break the $1,000 range for mics, you have reached this specific zone. Things to consider at that point deal w/ your typical application and sound preference. Few mics are truly transparent and colorless. Some mics have a brighter sound, while others have alot of low end. If you were gonna be doing a fair mixture of stealthing and open taping, it would be good to go w/ mics that have detachable capsules or what some call activator cables. Schoeps, Neumann, and MBHO come to mind. Stealthing comes into play when searching for other components in building a "rig". The Sound Devices MP-2 is small enough to use for stealthing. The SBM-1 also fits the stealthing size limit and the OADE's are doing a 24-bit mod. to them these days..... Other components like the Apogee's are not so stealth worthy and neither is the V.2 You could go w/ the small DPA's and Nutter's AD2K and probably stealth just fine. The Zefiro Inbox was made w/ stealthing in mind. So if you have $ 5,000 to spend, you could get an AWESOME rig! But you don't need to spend that much money to make high quality recordings. The best thing to do is collect enough sources and patch into enough rigs to get a solid idea of what you like and what you don't like. Also, making mental notes of the rigs that seem to be problematic for your potential applications. Hope this helps! D From: "Ragan Todd" <rhinelander2130@hotmail.com> Subject: Upgrade rant Date: Wed, 29 Aug 2001 22:29:42 A couple of recent posts have got me wondering. One questions the hardware approach to better sounding recordings, while another praises Josephson microphones as being as good or better than Schoeps. As a newbie with an M1 and omnis, I have made some very listenable recordings, but I wonder where I should invest to get better sound; microphones, cables, preamp/power supply, A/D convertor? Do you really get much benefit if only one part of the chain is upgraded? Has anybody upgraded and been disappointed with what they got for their money? I did a lot of work as a photographer in college, and the equipment you could afford sometimes determined whether you got a good photo, a crappy photo, or no photo. That being said, a Tamron lens with the same spec as a Nikon lens could cost half as much and one would be hard pressed to see a difference in a side by side comparison of the photos. Am I comparing apples and oranges here? Are there some good performing recording components that won't push a rig over $5K? Ragan

From: "Dan Greenberg" <letitgro@warwick.net> Subject: extra George Thorogood 5/18/01 for B+P Date: Fri, 31 Aug 2001 00:35:23 -0400 This outdoor GA show was in Deerpark, NY. It was recorded with Sonics Studios DSM-6 mics > Sony D8. It is ~100 min. but is missing the beginning of the first song. It's recorded on a Sony 90m DAT. In return, I'd like a sealed blank Sony or Maxell 90m DAT plus postage. First to respond after the Digest hits my mailbox gets it (unless you're willing to do B+P's for others). I'll be gone this weekend, so I'll have to get back to you either Monday or Tuesday nite. -Dan Greenberg-
From: "Marc Nutter" <nutter@sonicsense.com> Subject: File Size issues for computer recording Reply-To: "Marc Nutter" <nutter@sonicsense.com> Date: Thu, 30 Aug 2001 22:49:38 -0600 Hi All, At the risk of misusing DAT-heads or forcing a change to the a name like recording heads, I wanted to address the following statement made recently. >The 2GB limitation is bascially a Windows '98 issue. Windows NT >allows 4GB files. Not sure about Windows XT/2000/etc. This is true but the unfortunately aspect is the .wav files were created during the earlier days are were compliant with file size restrictions of 2GB. However, the right software can circumvent the issue. Namely, Wavelab from Steinberg has an automated process that will start writing a new file automatically at a user selectable file size of duration (time) of recording. Consequently, the recordist need not be present at the critical moment. No more tape flips, tape changes, or even manual start/stops... It just keeps getting more fun.... Happy Recording!!! Date: Fri, 31 Aug 2001 07:47:20 -0400 Is it possible to make a portable battery system to power an AC piece of hardware? Better yet, is it possible to do it and still keep it (battery system) no bigger than an ecocharge setup? Please point me to any resources that may be helpful. My goal, M-audio's new "audio sport duo" is AC powered. From: "Nick Georges" <nick@nickspicks.com> Subject: Preamp suggestions Date: Fri, 31 Aug 2001 08:01:30 -0400 Hey all... You may have just read my other post about making a portable AC system. This is sort of related. I am looking to buy a new preamp for my field rig. Optimum featrues: dual mic pre, phantom and A/D in one box. USB/Firewire AND s/pdif out. 24bit AD is a must. 96k support would be good. I would like something that would allow me to switch between laptop and DAT reocording or be able to support both simultaneously. What I've seen: m-audio audio sport duo. Exactly what I want, but 9vAC powered. Sound devices USBpre. can only be used with PC (draws power from USB, no s/pdif). Anything else? Price is an obsticle, of course. I'm looking to stay under a grand. or..would it be better to just by a V2 and battery system. Worry about A/D later. Thanks for any/all advice. ****************************************** www.nickspicks.com * a resource for digital music enthusiasts* * www.cablemodeminfo.com * best broadband resource page there is! * * * ******************************************

From: "Wayne D. Hoxsie Jr." <wayne@hoxnet.com> Subject: How do I best use my SBM-1? Reply-To: <wayne@hoxnet.com> Date: Fri, 31 Aug 2001 12:53:13 -0500 (CDT) I just got a used Sony SBM-1 and unfortunately didn't get a manual with it. Sony's web site has no info that I can find. Certainly DAT-Heads can help me out! The SBM-1 has me a bit confused with all the input jacks. I don't know which ones I should use with my setup. I currently have a set of Oktava MC-012's powered by a Denecke PS-2. This I feed through hi-Z/lo-Z XLR xfmr's to a 1/8 in. stereo adapter, then into the line-in of my PCM-M1. The SBM-1 has 2 1/4 in. mic jacks, a 1/8 in. mic jack, and 2 RCA jacks. The RCA's are labeled as "line-in" so I'm guessing that these would be most appropriate for my setup. I also assume that the 1/8 in. jack is for like CSB's or some other mics that need plug-in power. Is this correct? Does "-20 dB" switch act as an attenuator or does it cut-out a preamp stage (ala the M1)? What are the 1/4 in. jacks used for? What is the electronic difference between the 20 bit "super bitmapping" and the 16 bit "linear quantization"? How does a 20 bit A/D help if the DAT can only store 16 on the tape anyway? Any "gotchas" I should know about, or any other info would be greatly appreciated. -- Wayne D. Hoxsie Jr. wayne@hoxnet.com http://www.hoxnet.com PGP Key ID 138BCEE1
