(I purchased it very early to take advantage of an upgrade deal they had the first few weeks.) I then downloaded an update from their web site a few weeks later and voila the problem was solved. If you are curious, the problem was that SF was saving all temporary files at the highest bit resolution possible (32 bit, I think), even if you were working with a smaller bit size. The resulting translations from and to the larger bit size plus the extra disk I/O made it a hog. I'm much happier now. Hope this information helps! -- Bob NashPhil wrote: > I still say Soundforge 5.0 is SLOW. I've tried all > different configs and it just creeps along. It is an external USB device with optical and coax ins and outs and it also includes audio editng and recording software to transfer DAT or MD sources. Unfortunately it doesn't comply wih my computer's processor. So it is brand new (only taken out of the box and plugged into my usb port and not recognized with my computers processor. I will take the first $160 shipped that is offered before it goes to Ebay. It retails for $200 from J&R in NYC and the web. I have attached the link below and also check to see if it is compatable with your computer. My D7 was dropped a while back, and has been ignored until now. When I turn it on, it seems to work, but if any key is pressed or I attempt to eject the tape that is inside of the thing, it flashes off and on again, and the cycle repeats. It will cost me $40 to have the thing looked at at a local store, so I'm sort of hesitant, being that I'm a very low-cost taper in the first place. Has anyone else had this problem? How much did Sony (or whoever) charge to fix it? Was it fixable? Would I be better off putting that money into a MiniDisc recorder and going happily on my way? Jonathan ------------------------------ From: acffhmorst Subject: Re: ORTF Q Date: Sat, 1 Sep 2001 21:50:33 -0500 if a mic is aimed to the left, it's the left channel, and vicey versa. . . depending on the length of your mics, they may or may not cross in ORTF arrangement. Perhaps you are thinking of Coincident X/Y where the front of the capsules are veritically aligned, but aimed 90 degrees or more apart. ORTF refers to a mic aiming scheme using a 110 degree angle with 17 cm between the capsules (specifically the letters ORTF means the French version of the FCC, Office-Radio-Telephonique-France or something) In ortf, small-bodied mics are close to each other on the cable end, and aimed divergently. Coincident technique relies on mic capsules as close to each other as possible on the horizontal planes, with the offset being vertical. This is done because (in theory, at least) most stereo sounds are spread across the left-right axis, so one should place the mics in nearly identical locations in relation to the left and right sources. ORTF is more similar to binaural recording, in that the distance between the diaphragms is similar to that of the human ears' placement on the sides of the skull. Please allow me to digress for a moment to complete this thought. . . In true binaural recording, mics are mounted in a dummy head and located in the best spot for stereo imaging. The disadvantage of head-worn mics in a nearly-binaural configuration is that if they are actually omnidirectional pickup patterns, then they will be receiving almost the exact same music signal, and differ only on the ambient noises close to the mic position. In other words, if a recording is made from far enough back with closely spaced omni mics, the only thing in stereo will be the crowd noise. This is why omni mics, which by their design have the least sonic coloration, are best used when they are placed a good distance apart from one another. I would think a range of 5-20 feet would be best for most applications. . . too close and you get the same sound, too far apart, and the ambient sounds near one channel will have so little in common with the other that there may be a perception of a gulf between them, an unnaturally wide stereo image. I would love to know more about the practical application of Omnidirectional mics, the whole subject makes me think a lot! ( and listen!) hope this helps, I have recently received tapes recorded in the NOS configuration, near as I can figure, that's like coincident x/y but with space between the mics for a windscreen. good luck, feel free to ask away if you need more clarification. Sorry if I got longwinded. . . -tom On Saturday, September 1, 2001, at 12:50 PM, Digestifier wrote: > > From: "scott charles" > Subject: ORTF Q > Date: Fri, 31 Aug 2001 21:46:15 > > OK using the ortf mounting pattern - this may be a dumb question, but > the > mics are crossed, right?
