hey all,
Firstly, thanks for the numerous offers on my previous post regarding
Ani shows. I'm searching for a few key shows for myself and for a
friend. If anyone has the 4/25/01 show at the Stranahan in any format
then you hold the holy grail :) and I'd gladly trade a few extra shows
for this gem alone. If you possess this get in touch for an updated
list.
thanks,

First, the term "phantom power" can only and is only used when referring to the standard of sending typically 48v via pins 2 and 3 of a balanced pair. Phantom cannot be sent over unbalanced connections. The few volts of DC on an unbalanced input is and should be referred to as "bias voltage".
If one desires a more detailed explanation of bias voltage and phantom, I have a PDF on my web site at:

Tom on omni mics in #29:
<< I would think a range of 5-20 feet would be best for most applications.
. . too close and you get the same sound, too far apart, and the ambient
sounds near one channel will have so little in common with the other that
there may be a perception of a gulf between them, an unnaturally wide
stereo image....>>
Tom, when you get round to running trials with the above widely spaced
array, you will soon discover all sorts of anomalies...unconvincing image
which swims like a fish, huge hole in the middle etc.
If you want some omni-food for thought, set your spaced omni's parallel to
a tram- or railway track and make a recording of a clanking tram or
whistling train approaching from the left distance and receding into the
far right distance. Played over your home speakers, the vehicle will appear
to start quietly from the centre; move slowly across to the L speaker;
reverse direction and head back to the middle; make a loud quick jump
across the central chasm; head slowly for the R speaker, then again reverse
direction, to die out back at dead centre. And our poor brains also have to
reconcile this drunken meandering with the Doppler effect <g>.
In my experience, the safest compromise spacing for a non-baffled omni pair
is about 50 cm. Sure, the imaging is still wuzzy but that's the
conscious-trade off you make for the generally superior omni tone. You will
get much better imaging by using a central baffle plate, such as a Jecklin
disk, and the omni's then spaced 18 cm, but this technique also has some
down-sides - e.g. not fully loudspeaker compatible...until you apply some
corrections.
And on NOS:
<<...hope this helps, I have recently received tapes recorded in the NOS
configuration, near as I can figure, that's like coincident x/y but with
space between the mics for a windscreen.>>
The Dutch NOS is semi-coincident cardioids, angling 90 deg, spacing 30 cm,
with no baffles or "windscreens". Think of that technique as being Avis car
rental compared to the ORTF's Hertz ...number two and less popular, but
more or less as as effective. In semi-coincident recording, there are other
angling/spacing combo's which have been used to good effect, e.g. cardioids
at 120 deg / 7 cm. In general you can increase the stereo width by either
angling the mics outwards or by increasing the spacing. If you opt do it by
means of spacing, then you tend to get a less solid central image.

Wow, I never thought of this, but the Fostex D-5 question has me
wondering again.
Does the Sony D-8 have a clock that counts hours of usage(total life) or
head life? How is it accessed?
What can one expect, in terms of useful life, from a well maintained
D-8?
How about an HHB PortaDAT? The Fostex D-5 ?
Thanks,

Sorry for the OT/cross-post/etc...
Psychedelic Breakfast is looking for tapers for the following

will not be able to make it to these shows because of school.
We will provide you and one guest with a spot on the guest

we may only even need a digi-patch at the show, but assume
you will have to mail us a DAT copy.
If you are interested, please respond ASAP to davepeck79@home.com
