From: "Sam Hain" <samhain1313@hotmail.com> Subject: directv digital audio Date: Tue, 04 Sep 2001 14:17:43 -0400 The digital audio from directv receivers is 16/48. I don't believe that is actually trasmitted that way (due to bandwidth concerns) but that a 16/48 datastream is created out of the mpeg datastream in the reciever. there are a few channels that are in dolby digital (from 1.0 to 5.1) as well, that can also be recorded to DAT with not too much headache (at least if you have a zefiro ZA2) Hain _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp

From: "JR" <jr@digijam.org> Subject: Re: DAT-heads Digest #31 Reply-To: jr@digijam.org Date: Tue, 4 Sep 2001 15:15:07 -0400 I did some research on this myself, but your question is obvious. If your DSS unit has optical out, then you can bet the farm it's 44.1k 16 bit. Haven't seen a unit with coaxial digital out yet. the 44.1k signal is also coded with Dolby Digital when applicable. also, this is assuming you have a digital receiver. I just ahave the standard RCA analog receivers and i was *shocked* to find out that the analog l-r output is stereo and not even Dolby Pro Logic. it's like a giant step back. i think the only thing that comes through in Pro Logic are pay per view movies. i'm digressing into movies here, but one of the movies on DTV right now is the Who from RAH so this information is pertinent. From: "Mike BB" <oongowa@rochester.rr.com> Subject: FS: pair of Oktava MC-012's Date: Tue, 4 Sep 2001 17:17:20 -0400 I'm going to upgrade so I'm selling my Oktava MC-012 mics to help me along. I have two MC-012's with the cardoid caps, -10db pad, mounting clips and hard plastic cases for each mic. They're in perfect condition, I probably used them around 20 times and have always kept very good care of them. These mics are PERFECT for someone that wants a great set of mics but doesn't want to spend $1800 on them. All of my recordings sound excellent, and my Schoeps/Neumann friends will agree. If you can do FTP/shn I'd be happy to let you download a couple songs from me to hear what I've done with them. I paid $350 for the pair about a year ago, I'd like to get $200. I will cover the shipping. These mics must go...SOON. Thanks... Mike Beebe

I looked into this a good number of months ago and ended up pulling down the Yamaha datasheets and coming to the conclusion that it did resampling. I am pretty certain the actual card I was looking at was based on the YMF744. This time I got a bit lazy and am just quoting some other articles. One from the ALSA seems to indicate that current Digital-XG cards based on the YMF754 might not resample, although the first article rules that chipset out as "resampling" everything. If you find someone definately with the YMF754, drop me a line -- it would be nice to have AES/EBU and its not so much $$ to just try it. > Here's a link: > > <http://www.hoontech.com/product/soundcard/yamahaxg.htm> S/PDIF sound card =========== http://www.nomad.ee/micros/digitalaudio.html After searching the web for a day and going through various reviews and datasheets, I was able to narrow my search to somewhat reasonable alternatives (in other words, exclude everything with words 'professional audio' in the description). After reading some more, I crossed out Creative (resampling everything to 48K), Terratec (Price), Yamaha YMF744 and YMF754 XG cards (resampling everything). What was left is C-media chip which is cheap and does everything I need. ============== http://www.alsa-project.org/archive/alsa-devel/msg06618.html The latest hardware revision of the Digital XG uses a YMF754 rather than a YMF744. According to Yamaha, there are exactly two differences: - power supply/consumption (doesn't matter of course): this makes the YMF754 a better chip for notebooks - digital input: the YMF754 is able to record without resampling from the input, even at 44.1 and 32kHz =========== Sean
From: brn2rnTR@netscape.net (Thomas Rosander) Subject: Mic upgrade question Date: Tue, 04 Sep 2001 17:22:46 -0400 Hi everyone, As I?m on my way to upgrade my mics seriously I am looking for some feedback from you guys. The mics I consider to buy is MBHO 603a/KA200N and Neuman SKM140, plus a Denecke PS2 for either one. Now does anyone know how long a 9v batt. will go with the MBHO and the Neumanns? Has anyone compared the sound of these two? (I read a German magazine review of the MBHO648/KA200N today that compared them with Schoeps activecable mics, turned out the Schoeps won but at only due to a bit more lowend everything else seemed to be very much alike.) I plan to run the mics directly from the PS2 into the mic pre of my Oade M1. Would this be totally crazy, or not? Stealth is important here and I don?t like to carry around a lot of boxes. If anyone has any comments on my questions I would be very happy to read them. Date: Tue, 4 Sep 2001 17:07:35 -0500 Hi everyone, I need a camcorder to record mostly live performances. Although most will be authorized there may be a few that are not. The main features i am looking for are: 1) MUST be as small as possible 2) Must have stereo sound. The ability to attach external microphones would be great but is not essential It would also be nice to have some sort of LCD display but that is again not essential. My price range is $450 or less. I believe they used a 44... However, what was "odd" about it was the signal output was relatively low, the peaks came nowhere's near 0, yet the sound quality was excellent. I'm not sure if the low output was because of DTV or my Hughes box. I tried both the coax and optical outputs and the signal level was the same... -wf

From: "John Kupchik" <blueskied@hotmail.com> Subject: "line input vs. mic input" w/CSBs & bass roll off filter Date: Tue, 4 Sep 2001 18:30:33 -1000 Hi everyone, I came across this bit of info on the Core Sound page (under the = Attenuator cable section) which sorta confused me: "And if you want to use a bass roll-off filter with your microphones , = you can't use the Line input because its impedance is too high for the = filter, so you should again be using an attenuator cable with the Mic = input." I have been taping my CSBs>Bass Roll-off Filter>Line input of D8. Should = I be going into the Mic input??? Do I REALLY need an attenuator cable? I = had no idea the roll off filter shouldn't go into the line input. I = think my tapes sound pretty good into the line input, albeit I have to = add EQ to boost the bass and highs when playing them back. Would they = sound better through the mic input? I really am hesitant to do this = because I have gotten distortion through the mic input, BUT that was = before I had the bass roll off filter. UGH!! If someone could make all this clear to me, I'd really appreciate it. cheers, john
