From: "Doug Nawrocki" <dnawrocki@cinci.rr.com> Subject: Problems with Sony DGs Date: Wed, 5 Sep 2001 09:31:52 -0400 Hey All, I thought for a while that my Delta Audiophile was having a problem adding clicks into stuff I was transferring but that seems odd considering it successfully transferred several shows prior. I'm thinking it's my DA-P1. Besides than just that, all the shows that I seem to have issues with are on Sony data grades. I've used Maxell HS-4s, Verbatim DataLifes and Quantegy Audio Tapes and all seem to have transferred without incident. I've had issues with a Phil seed and a SCI seed, all on Sonys. The diginoise is always in the form of pops. Could my deck be picky about the dats I'm feeding it? Could it be time to service the deck? Could this all be coincidence and it's more than likely really the soundcard? Thanks for any help! From: Jason Neely <bondibox@bellsouth.net> Subject: Burning 48k to CD Reply-To: bondibox@bellsouth.net Date: Wed, 05 Sep 2001 12:33:33 -0400 I've noticed that when I drop a 48k .wav onto the Toast application (I use a Mac) it converts it to a 44.1k .aif (it will always convert a wav to aif in order to burn it). My question is, does Toast do a good enough job at this? Should I go through one of my sound editing programs, or even the internal crystal clock of my Midiman sound card? If resampling leaves "artifacts", does it leave different artifacts according to the medium used to resample? -jas

From: "David Ingram" <dattrader@ntown.com> Subject: AudioExcel Card Date: Thu, 6 Sep 2001 00:11:40 -0400 Hello DatHeads, A while back I purchased an AudioExcel soundcard on Ebay for roughly $10 in hopes I could do some transfers with it. The chip has on it the following information. AudioExcel CM8738/PCI HRTF Audio Com M9E38-033D 9943UGGD To my dismay, there is only a standard S/PDIF coax out on the card. But, It does have a jumper on it that is labeled OPTICAL S/PDIF I/O. It's 7-pin. So my question is this, can I do anything with this card, or do I just have another piece of junk hardware? Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. -Dave (dattrader@ntown.net)
From: Erich S <leaves1854@yahoo.com> Subject: FS: Fibox mic pre (Repost) Date: Wed, 5 Sep 2001 10:30:07 -0700 (PDT) Hey everyone. I posted about this Fibox preamp I have for sale a few days ago. It's quite a deal a for anyone who wants it. Would like to get at least $500 for it. $500 is 1/3 the price of it new, which it is. Cost me a bit more than that. Here's the info, if you're not interested but know someone who may be, please pass this info on to them (I need da cash) LIGHTWAVE Systems, Inc. - Fibox system including: -FBAI-M, a 20-bit A/D 2-channel fiber-optic interface with mic preamps; The Mic input box (stereo XLR) -FBAO-M, a fiber-optic interface that outputs 2-channel analog audio through a 20-bit D/A converter; the Mic output box. (Stereo XLR) Balanced XLR in, balanced XLR out, can pass very high quality digital signal down 3 miles of fiber with NO LOSS and provide 48V phantom power at the source. Perfect for remote recording. Interconnects between any ST (straight through) optical fiber I/O cable (comes with a 12' ST fiber cable) Brand new out of the box (literally), only used one time to make sure it works, which it does. Includes wall warts for both boxes, manual, and origional packaging. A rep. through the comp. I work at made me a great deal on it. It's really cool, but it's not what I need at the moment. Would be ideal for a semi-permanent install in a club or an onstage taper. Here's a link for more info on the product: http://www.lightwavesys.com/news/Jun_1995.htm List for $1499; could be yours for $500 OBO. I'll cover shipping. From: "Derek Swingley" <fluffmasterflex@hotmail.com> Subject: 24/laptop taping Date: Wed, 5 Sep 2001 14:03:48 -0500 I'll start off by saying that I am somewhat new to the taping world but I have learned a great deal in a relatively short period of time. First off, I would like to say that anyone who is considering making the jump to laptop/24 bit taping should not hesitate. While some units are still quite pricey at this juncture, 90% of the necessary components are very affordable. For example, I recently picked up a digigram vx pocket for $403 including shipping. Also, I have a Sony vaio picturebook C1-VN on the way for $1150. This was all made possible by a man named dan heend. You may know dan from such websites as www.daarwin24.com and www.24bitfag.org. Great stuff. Especially be sure to check out his hotpicks (where I got my vx pocket for such a great deal :). Also, Dan will personally modify a picturebook for you to have a 30 gig harddrive, 256 megs of RAM, among other things like installing win2K and his recording build: Daarwin24 and C.L.E.A.R. Who remembers seeing these components at sonicsense.com for a short while? I do. I am not bashing anyone in any way but I really dislike paying for more than what is necessary. I would rather piece my new rig together than buy a "package" from a vendor who really has no experience in the computer world. Although some may claim that the 24 bit FAQ is lengthy, it is all necessary and is not only directed at laptop taping but also at taping in general. I feel that Dan has done a wonderful job. Well, there's my rant, sorry for all the text but I just couldn't keep this to myself. Have fun! Peace, Derek
From: acffhmorst <morst@itis.com> Subject: Re: Mic upgrade question Date: Wed, 5 Sep 2001 13:33:08 -0500 This would not be totally crazy. You will be able to make recordings which will be quite good, of course there's always room for improvement! Having to use the mic preamp in the M1 would make a few possible upgrade paths clear: an outboard preamp, preferably one where you could set left and right channel levels separately. I suppose you could run the mics directly into the 1/4" jacks on a SBM-1, and use its mic preamps, but I would think you could get higher quality results by upgrading the preamp before the a>d converters. Isn't there something called a Billbox, AKA Reutelhuber (sp?) which could provide phantom power and fixed preamplification in a tiny package? If you aren't willing to tote a full-sized portable outboard preamp perhaps you would be happy with the sonic/size compromise that the Billbox seems to offer. I have never seen the thing in person, but I gather that it's very stealthy. I have heard tapes from it, and believe that it probably is better than the M1, most likely noticeable in the noise floor department, but also I would hope that the Billbox can handle higher input levels that the M1's. . .I bet the billbox can't pan though. . . if someone knows the details of the billbox, please post a link and elucidate me! Hope this helps. You're considering some very nice microphones, I hope you are happy with your results! -tom > > From: brn2rnTR@netscape.net (Thomas Rosander) > (snip!) > The mics I consider to buy is MBHO 603a/KA200N and Neuman SKM140, > plus a Denecke PS2 for either one. > (snip!) > I plan to run the mics directly from the PS2 into the mic pre of my > Oade M1. > Would this be totally crazy, or not? The CSB bass roll-off filter is designed to work into the Mic input's 4.7k impedance. If you run it into the Line input's 47k Ohm impedance, the filter becomes completely ineffective; it's as if the filter is not even there. That's why we recommend that if you need the filter, and would overload the Mic pre-amp input when recording loud sound sources, that you use a 20 dB attenuator cable between the mics and the Mic input. I hope this helped! The windows noises still work, but .wav, mp3s, internet audio, etc. appear to be playing in the program, but I don't get any sound. I can play and record using digital in, and the anaolg out works fine. I've tried every combination of settings on the WT mixer, but nothing seems to work-- Any help, computer people? From: Bill Shaw <Bill.Shaw@hds.com> Subject: RE: "line input vs. mic input" w/CSBs & bass roll off filter Date: Wed, 5 Sep 2001 12:54:08 -0700 it was written: ======================================================================= I came across this bit of info on the Core Sound page (under the = Attenuator cable section) which sorta confused me: "And if you want to use a bass roll-off filter with your microphones , = you can't use the Line input because its impedance is too high for the = filter, so you should again be using an attenuator cable with the Mic = input." I have been taping my CSBs>Bass Roll-off Filter>Line input of D8. Should = I be going into the Mic input??? Do I REALLY need an attenuator cable? I = had no idea the roll off filter shouldn't go into the line input. I = think my tapes sound pretty good into the line input, albeit I have to = add EQ to boost the bass and highs when playing them back. ======================================================================== I don't have the setup you have but I do have a couple of comments: 1. If something is working for you, like using the bass roll-off with line in, well then let the good time roll! If it ain't broke, yada yada yada... 2. WHY are you using the bass roll-off in the first place if you need to boost the bass later during playback?? My philosophy with regard to bass roll-offs and other "high pass" filters, is to get as much signal/information as possible during the mastering (ie: don't use the filters!). Then if the bass (or anything else) needs tweaking, EQ it later!! (yes, there will be exceptions, such as really boomy auditoriums, and the like, but *in general* I do not use any filters/roll-offs while mastering). Seems to me you're filtering out the bass while mastering, then adding it back in post show. Again, why take it out if yer gonna add it back in later??? Bill
