Usually problems like this are hardware specific. Particularly because
it's a single customer who has a problem out of hundreds of others
using the same product in similar setups.
In fact I have had customers send back product that would not work
in the same make and model of a unit that I have but when the product
is returned it works in my unit fine!
One good test would be to try them in a different setup and see if
the same problem occurs. If so it may be the media if not than it's
a harware problem.

Subject: First timer, some questions
Date: Wed, 05 Sep 2001 18:37:45 -0400
Hi all,
Sorry for the newbie email. I'm looking at plunking down a bit of cash for a nice stealth taping rig (as I don't go to taper friendly gigs...I should though). Don't know much about taping or where to begin. Some questions:
1) I'm looking at and considering a pair of Core Sound HEBs/DPA 4061, and they seem to be a better investment than the standard CSBs. I've heard a few recordings done on DPAs/CSHEBs and they sound spectacular. What other stealth mics would some of you recommend?
2) Since I'll be "crotching" it so to speak, what are some precautions I should take when hiding the mics? I know I want to avoid "kinks" in the line, especially near the mics, but how fragile are the CSHEBs/DPA's?
3) Right now I have a Philips CDR880 audio deck standalone CD burner. Rather than spending more $$$$$ on a DAT deck or double decker, or some sort of PC/sound card for cloning/CD transfers, would buying either a special digital optical or coax transfer cable(if it exists) for a DAT M1 and stick it in the digital outs of the Philips CDR880 make for a decent transfer? (Assuming I record at 44.1 kHz and everything goes well)?
Lastly I'm looking for a few DAT0 > CDR shows. Please let me know if any tapers can offer these:
1) Travis - Live at Yerba Buena Gardens (outside San Francisco Metreon) June 12, 2001
2) Depeche Mode - San Jose Arena November 11(?), 1993
Lastly, I got a good DAT0 > CDR of the August 20, 2001 Hollywood Bowl show that came in today. CSB > M1, taped from the Terrace section, facing right side of stage. Looking for older DAT0 Radiohead shows or upgrades.
Thanks,
Ken

Subject: Phish Tape Liquidation (lots of rare/uncirculated stuff)
Date: Wed, 05 Sep 2001 23:02:18
After eight great years of DAT taping and trading, it is unfortunately time
for me to move on.
Over the next two weeks I will be offering up a total of 500 Phish tapes,
all in blocks of ten tapes each. Tapestock includes all the good stuff:
Maxell HS4-60, Maxell HS4-90, Sony DTR-120 (min), Sony DG60, Sony DG90, KAO
Gold 60, KAO Gold 90, and Panasonic 124 (min).
Included are many rare, lowly-circulated, and uncirculated tapes. On
semi-common to common shows, what are believed to be best available sources
are what I have. From 1997 on, the highest quality Schoeps rigs in the most
knowledgeable mastering hands is what was employed.
For each block of ten tapes each, I would ask for the going rate of new
Maxell HS-4 blanks (the predominant tapestock in my collection). Based on
current prices from Terrapin Tapes and Masterpiece AV (and with an average
between 60m tapestock and 90m tapestock), this works out to be $2.95/tape.
UPS shipping will be $5.00/block, which makes the total price for a block of
ten tapes (including shipping) $34.50.
Below are the first seven blocks I will offer up. Please email me and
include the block number that you are interested in.
Thanks.

I've gotten the former already with ORTF. I don't know why it happens,
but when I run my mics outdoors with windscreens, the image tends to
wander around a little. Nothing too noticeable, but it gets on my nerves
when I'm really paying attention to it. I haven't noticed the hole in the
middle on any of the split-recording tapes I've heard so far, though
(nor on any ORTF tapes, of course.) Is the presence or absence of a hole
really just a function of how widely spaced the mics are?
Also, and more importantly, is running mics split ever a good idea, or
should we all stick with ORTF, which produces good enough tapes 80% of the
time, or some other near-coincident or coincident setup? The tapes I've
heard so far seem to indicate that split recordings can sound excellent.
Personally, I'd like to get to the point where I know which technique to
use in any given situation to make the best tape possible with my
equipment.

Hello all. I've got a SV3800 that needs a new home.
The deck is mint, fresh from a once over at the local
shop. It hasn't ever seen much use or 90m tapes.
Total hour meter reads 655 hours of use. Box, remote,
manual included as well as extended warranty until
8/25/2003. Selling now as I'm finally able to
purchase a burner. Asking price is $600 - but no
respnable offer will be refused. Buyer pays shipping
costs and I've got a few extras & blank tapes to throw
in. Please Email me at ja2488@yahoo.com with offers,
questions or for more information.

Subject: Re: Mic upgrade question
Date: Wed, 5 Sep 2001 20:14:46 -0400
But wait!
Behind door #2 we have......
Another option:
Going straight into the M1 and using it's puny pre-amp and A/D could be
problematic...... Even if you have the Oade mod. How do you know? you
may ask....
Well, I own an M1 w/ the Oade pre-amp mod. When I first bought my "rig" it
was mics, stand, cables and AKG B-18's. I already had the M1 w/ Oade pre-amp
mod. The guy that I bought my "rig" from had an HHB so he did not worry
about a pre-amp or A/D converter......
I had the Oade's make me some XLR>RCA cables and I was off to tape Ratdog at
the HOB. I made sure that I was DEAD center. One channel was still higher
than the other and I had no control over that. Plus, even though I ran my
levels conservatively, the puny little M1 just could not handle the peaks
from my Josephsons. I was disappointed. I called Doug and he said that I
needed something w/ a little more meat than the M1.
I previously had been running a friend's rig which included the Denecke
PS-1's and the Zefiro Inbox. So I called up Len Moskowitz and bought the
Inbox. I have been very very happy w/ the Inbox and it works well in the
stealth situation. In fact, another friend of mine has designed an elastic
belt that holds these units in place under his shirt.
Now, I do not recommend the AKG B-18's to anyone. I also prefer the Denecke
PS-1 to the PS-2. It's very important to keep the power to you mics as close
to 48v as possible for peak performance.
I know the MBHO's have a similar sound to my Josephsons. Several of my
friends run them w/ the Sound Devices MP-2 and have no problem powering
them. However, I have heard from a few people that the MBHO's are power
hogs. I am not sure how true this is......
I also see the Neumann 140's run w/ many various pre-amps and I am unsure of
their powering needs......
My friend Ben is the only person that I know of that runs the PS-2. He
powers his AKG 480's w/ no problem w/ the PS-2. I am not sure if their
powering needs are similar to the MBHO's and 140's or not.....
I can tell you that if you plan on getting either brand of mic that you
mentioned and run them straight into your M1, you will be disappointed.
You just may be searching for a Zefiro Inbox if you wanna stay compact. I
used an Oade 248 in place of my Denecke's and Zefiro at WSP 12/30/00. It
sounded pretty good, but it lacked the bass and clarity that my Zefiro had
the next night at nearly the same height and location...
Hope this helps!

Yeah, this seems like what I'm going to be doing, for the short term at =

> 2. WHY are you using the bass roll-off in the first place if you need =

Well, the reason I got the roll off box is that I was getting annoying =
bass distortion (and/or really boomy bass) once in awhile without it. So =
I figured it better to be safe and roll it off during recording, then EQ =
it back in during playback. But in essence, as Len stated, going into =
the line input via a bass roll off filter renders the filter null, and =
so it's as if I'm just going into the line input through a regular =
battery box. I should note that instances I was getting bass distortion =
before were through the MIC input. So I should probably just get the =
attenuator cable so if i really NEED the bass roll off I can go through =
the mic input, if not I won't use the attenuator and just plug into the =

Hi Everyone
Due to my misguided faith in the sony d8 and myself, I have a 20 min gap on the
tape I just made @ hammerstein. You'd think I'd learn.
From the end of Whores Hustle to the middle of sky light up. About 20 min I
think. I put it into "hold" mode (w/o checking that it did in fact go into hold
- hey, it was stealth, and I was taping solo) and put it in my pocket. Checking
later - it was off. F#ck!
Okay now the grovel - I'll take ANYTHING, no matter how poor sounding, to edit
(digitally on my PC) into my tape. I have mucho PJ to trade, including last
nite (tues 9/4).
(both shows Core Sound battery box > d8 from dead center 50' from stage)
!! PLEASE HELP !!
I will be making CDs of both shows, I'd love to give you copies.
Thanks ... in advance ... grovel grovel ... snif
