From: Tim Newman <i3lkpeter@yahoo.com> Subject: Nightingale Pro 6 mine is introducing noise... (Aaargh) Date: Sun, 9 Sep 2001 00:48:48 -0700 (PDT) Mine showed up earlier this week. Installed quite painlessly blah, blah, blah. Only problem is I'm getting some noise. The noise is virtually inaudible thru speakers, but when I listen via headphones I can hear "pops and clicks". The sound is subtle, but can be distracting especially when listening to some crisp DSBD's. Seems like the louder the passage the more noticeable it is. I also noticed that my D8>oade active cable>coax>S/PDIF seemed to produce the noise more often than my DA-P1>coax>S/PDIF. Tried re-installing, updating directx, I have the most current driver from Zoltrix etc. At a complete loss. Aaaargh. Anybody else out there experience this? What gives? FWIW, my setup: PC (733 PIII, 384MB RAM), Win98 (not 2nd edition) -T __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? From: "Popivchak, Pete" <PPopivchak@GardenWay.com> Subject: DAT > HD and EAC questions Date: Sun, 9 Sep 2001 09:41:23 -0400 Hey Now: Several questions for the group... Not that my road runner cable modem is hooked up, I've started letting friends download SHN files of recent shows that I've taped. But I'm concerned about executing certain tasks while several folks are downloading data. In a nutshell, is it safe for me to: 1) transfer from DAT to my hard drive with downloading in the background... is there any real risk that i will corrupt the files i'm transferring? 2) similarly, is there any danger in EAC discs while downloading is occuring in the background? My system info is: PCM-M1 > Coax > Audiophile 24/96 > SoundForge 5.0 Computer is a a Dell Dimension 4100 with PIII and 256 RAM. This dilema occurs as I've typically got DATs to convert to disc (and later SHN) and my buds will be downloading for the foreseable future and I don't want to have errors on the music i listen to or circulate. Thanks, in advance, for any and all input! Please reply to my home email: ppopivch@nycap.rr.com Cheers, Pete
From: JH <kc7fys@pro-ns.net> Subject: Frampton 6 Mar 74 Ebbett's Field, Denver UPGRADE NEEDED! (thx) Date: Sun, 09 Sep 2001 08:49:31 -0600 Hello, As is occasionally the case with CDR, a disc just won't play in any drive, even at 1X. I've shopped this thing all around the house, and nothing plays it, but EAC will extract it in 'burst mode' which yields an understandably horrible result. I remember having heard this show when it entered my archive, but heaven knows how. Anybody got this show on DAT, CDR or other? (Even multigen analog would beat this copy...). Thanks, thousands of hours to trade, Jonathan

Date: Sun, 09 Sep 2001 10:42:00 -0700 Hello, Has anyone taped any shows of John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussain's Indo-jazz supergroup, Shakti? I'm planning to do a marathon radio show (www.whrb.org), and I'm trying to find all the random stuff I can get. I don't have much to offer as of now (I will be taping some great Hindustani performances this month), but you will get a shout out on Boston's biggest jazz station. Thanks, Ryan

From: Rob Gronotte <rob@patriot.net> Subject: Steve Wynn / The Days Of Wine And Roses tour Date: Sun, 9 Sep 2001 12:47:06 -0400 (EDT) For those of you not very familiar with him, Wynn used to be in a band called the Dream Syndicate; now their first album, "The Days Of Wine And Roses" is being resissued, and in conjunction with that Steve's band will be playing the entire album at his upcoming solo shows. Format will probably be; first a set of newer material (maybe about an hour or so), then the album set, possibly after a break. The entire show will probably be 2 to 2 1/2 hours. I hope some of these shows will get taped, I know many people on the Wynn mailing list are excited about them. I will be seeing two East Coast shows, but here he is not the headliner so will not be playing the full album. If anyone wants more information about the music or anything else, please let me know, and if you know of anyone else in the areas listed please forward this to them and let me know who they are. Thanks! By the way, Steve encourages taping of his sets, so it won't be a problem with him, although I don't know anything about the policies of the venues. He normally allows taping from the board as well, although I imagine these places are all pretty small and the house mix wouldn't sound very good on a tape (unless you can get the soundman to give you a special mix). What > gives? > > FWIW, my setup: PC (733 PIII, 384MB RAM), Win98 (not 2nd edition) I've noticed this on my Midiman 2448 (same chipset as the zoltrix) somewhat. Make sure all the other analog channels are muted. The mic, line-in and cd-in are all fed through a pretty crappy pre-amp and it will introduce unwanted noise into a purely digital stream. With the channels set to zero (or muted) the preamp is disengaged from the rest of the digital circuitry. As far as the cabling goes, I don't know what gives. I've got an active sony 7pin (american digital) that causes pops and clicks apart from the above mentioned scenario. I called their tech support about it but they said they'd never heard of such a thing and didn't see how it could be related. I don't get this problem with my cheap purely passive core-sounds cable. Anyway, for archiving purposes I use a Midiman CO-2 and an optical cable and I don't get any unwanted noise (to test this, I left the deck plugged in and CO-2 active but no tape playing and recorded an hour of silence. The resulting file was 100% zeros). -- Wayne D. Hoxsie Jr. wayne@hoxnet.com http://www.hoxnet.com PGP Key ID 138BCEE1

You ARE on the right track with your D8 ritual. There's only one small addition -- as you're playing back the test signal on the leader, hit PAUSE. Then hit RECORD to put the deck into record-pause mode. Then you'll be ready to roll. The key is to go straight from a playback test to actually recording without letting the tape unload. If the tape unloads (this can happen any time you use STOP, REWIND, or FF) it might not load correctly again. I've only experienced the problem with 90m tape, but I use this method with 60m too, figuring it can't hurt. I think I learned that trick here actually... whoever it was, thanks! :) Take care, Pat

It's purely a matter of preference. The interfaces don't change any of the chip functionality. The CMI8738 is completely self-contained and no external signal processing is used in any of the cards that I know of using this chipset. The CMI8738 has a switchable S/PDIF output from 0.5V to 5V in order to drive an optical jack, but this is not used in any of the cards I'm aware of. They all utilize separate circuitry to drive the optical jacks so that they can be used concurrently and seamlessly with the coax interfaces. -- Wayne D.
