From: "Derek Swingley" <fluffmasterflex@hotmail.com> Subject: FS: 64 megs of SDRAM for a vaio... Date: Sun, 9 Sep 2001 19:30:54 -0500 Is there any interest in this? I'm switching it out for an additional 128 megs of RAM for my new machine. I'm asking $100, half of the upgrade cost to 256. Also, I wouldn't be able to ship this for about 2-3 weeks. Have fun, Derek
From: "Dan Greenberg" <letitgro@warwick.net> Subject: extra Phil & Friends 4/29/01 for B+P Date: Sun, 9 Sep 2001 19:40:07 -0400 This is for the Phil Lesh & Friends show at Asbury Park on 4/29/01. It was recorded w/ DPA 4023 mics. The show is on a pair of Sony 90m DATs (one per set). In return, I'd like two sealed Sony or Maxell 90m DATs plus postage. First to respond after the Digest hits my mailbox gets it (unless you're willing to do B+P's for others, which I would give preference to...in which case tell me how many you're willing to make). -Dan-
From: David Minches <dminches@snip.net> Subject: IP / Connection Question Date: Sun, 09 Sep 2001 19:43:59 -0400 If I run winipcfg on my machine I can see my IP address (for my cable modem). However, if I configure an FTP client with that IP address and try to log on anonymously, I cannot. Do I need to set up a login and a password? Am I doing something else wrong? Is there some other software that I need to set up on my machine to accomplish this? Thanks, David

If the hd's attention drifts to another app for even an instant, you will very likely drop samples. This is a real-time transfer, if you dont catch all the bits, theyre gone. If you had a separate drive for the dat stream to be written to, you _might_ get away with it, but I wouldnt take the chance. > > 2) similarly, is there any danger in EAC discs while downloading is > occuring in the background? this you can get away with, EAC is reading data and writing data, its hard to mess this up. > From: "Wayne D. From: Matt Day <retreatinn@iprimus.com.au> Subject: Is Anyone Taping this Performance? Date: Mon, 10 Sep 2001 12:40:57 +1000 A Quote from Melbourne Newspaper "The Age" Sept 10th 2001 "Last Wednesday, at midnight in Halberstadt, Germany, a capacity audience attended the world premiere of Cage's ORGAN2/ASLSP. That stands for "As Long As Possible". This was originally a 20-minute piano piece, but rewritten in 1987 for organ and slightly expanded by 3,358,400 minutes or so. In short (forgive the oxymoron) the piece runs for 639 years. on Wednesday , all that was heard was the sound of the organ's bellows being inflated- a sound that will continue until January 5 2003, when the first three actual notes will be sounded. weights on the keyborad will sustain this chord until February 5, and so on, every month, until (war and Armageddon notwithstanding) the last chord on February 5, 2640. The orginisers say the length is a contrast with the hectic pace of the modern world. All we want to know is, who is going to review it?" What about tapers, Its a long time to sit still if you go in stealth.

EAC should not run at the same time as transferring DAT>HD. In my experience, all of my problems were solved when I just got a cheapie P200pro machine with a SCSI and 10K drivea and Plextor 12/4/32, along with a bunch of other 5400 RPM drives, and networked that to my P850 machine that I use for EAC and internet, etc. Nothing should disturb the writing of data to the HD, but if you use several drives, it's probably safe if you're writing to a non-system resident drive. Mostly, though, having a dedicated machine for DAW, even one with a puny processor like mine, makes multitasking a non-issue when working with audio. I think my whole DAW cost something like 80$, and I just pulled the stuff from my faster machine that I was trying to do audio with, and dedicated it to that machine. It's one answer to your question. Jonathan

Hardware rack mount unit converts instantly to 44.1KHz, strips SCMS, converts and splits formats(optical, coax, AES/EBU), corrects jitter, etc. A must have for CD burning freaks with little time. Not doing enough CD's to justify owning it anymore. Can't begin to tell you how much time it saved me. Sells for $239 new, reserve set at $180. From: JoE McCabe <energyi@mccabe.net> Subject: DAT story (repost cause of linebreaks) Date: 10 Sep 2001 08:41:27 -0700 Dear DATheads: Dear DATheads: It all started in 1995, ….well, maybe 1994, when I got married. I suggested that I wouldn't attend my own wedding if Jerry died. So a year later, IT happened and I didn't attend the funeral. Instead, I bought a DAT deck, and began trading shows, to try and keep the music alive. I purchased a DA-20, didn't get an extended warranty, have been dry-cleaning the heads whenever I remember (logging the date). The Tascam was my choice because it has SCMS defeating capabilities. And, I found out later, you obtain error codes by doing strange combinations of keys and knob positions. Basically, the DA-20 is a professional deck that was dumbed down for the consumer market. It has served me very well for the past 6 years, and keeps on working. I first traded by sending out blanks and postage. Then, I would tempt people with my shows by sending out my master tape, along with a blank, and people would send me back both tapes, my oringinal show, and a new show; I'd supply postage each way. Thus, I accumulated about 100 shows. After being single-decker for a year or so, I did the only logical thing, I bought another deck, a D-8. And I purchased a core-sound RCA in and out 7-pin cable. Now I was ready to patch in at shows and trade one for one. It has been a great "strange trip" meeting all you traders through DATheads, and at the shows. The subculture is a rewarding venture. I have only lost two 90 meter tapes in all my trading (I use 90 meters all the time in both decks, no problems). And I don't think the people were not rip off artists, just too dosed. I've been able to acquire just about every taper friendly live show I've ever attended. My collection is now over 300 shows. Now, comes the reason for the post. I am upgrading my taping arangements and thought I'd share the tech-no info. I have purchased an Iwill (iwillusa.com) motherboard kk266plus-R with a 1.2 GHz Althlon processor ($135 + $116 at tccomputers.com) plus a 256 MB RAM and 60 Gbyte 5400 rpm ATA-100 hard drive ($29 + $69 at fry's) and a 12x DVD, 40X CDRom drive ($39 Frys) along with a SPDIF riser card for the Iwill motherboard ($19 frys) and a new case ($42) for a grand total of around $420 with shipping for a sound editing system. The motherboard has integrated CMI8738 6 Channel w/SPDIF (through IWILL SuperAudio). With my Soundforge 4.0 and a 4X CDR, I hope to be transferring my DAT collection to CD media, and trading the DATs out, for more CD's. But that is not all, the Iwill motherboard has built in RAID, so, eventually, I think this box is going to be serving up shows. Keep 'em moving, no matter what the format changes; that will keep the music, and Jerry's memory, alive. Thanks to all for your generosity of time and interest in trading. Hope this helps. JoE sorry about the re-post, looks like I didn't have line breaks, hope this works ~smiley~ Joseph McCabe, P.E. Energy Ideas Phone & Fax (530)795-2930 energyi@mccabe.net www.energyi.mccabe.net . . .

The Delta DIO 2496 (link is http://www.m-audio.com/m-audio/product.htm ) have following features: ========= Professional digital transferring and mastering have never been as affordable and easily accessible as they are now with the Delta DiO 2496. With a host of pro features, the Delta DiO 2496 is ready for any and all optical and coaxial S/PDIF applications. Besides sporting dual format digital I/O (optical on TOSlink connectors, coaxial on gold-plated RCA connectors), the Delta DiO 2496 also provides a high-quality D/A converter which may be used for monitoring or mixdowns. All data paths support 24 bit 96kHz operation, and the D/A output channels are completely independent of the digital output channels making the Delta DiO 2496 a 2-in 4-out full-duplex card. Finally, the Delta DiO 2496 offers onboard digital mixing and routing, monitor control, SCMS (Serial Copy Management System) output on S/PDIF, and even multi-platform operation. Features . 2-in, 4-out 24 bit/96kHz full-duplex audio interface on a half-size PCI card. . S/PDIF inputs and outputs on Coaxial (RCA) and Optical (TOSlink) jacks. . High-quality stereo analog output on RCA jacks, configurable as +4dB or -10dB. . Built-in digital mixer allows the D/A converter to monitor digital inputs or act as its own independent stereo output. . Measured D/A specs: 101dB (A-weighted) dynamic range, 0.002% THD @ 0dBFS. . All data paths support up to 24 bit/96kHz performance. . Now I have some questions: 1 - Compatibility of soundcard with Soundforge 4.5 + CD architect: Soundforge is 16 bit, and my next new DIO 2496 is 24 bit. Do you think I'll have troubles? 2- How I can use DAT with PC? I put tape inside Dat deck, and just hit play buttom? How I can transfer from DAT to PC, converting in wav files? For guitarist(musician) : 1- What is the best softwares to record guitar (HD multitracks recordings, etc)? The way this works is I'll collect names from the folks on this list that want a copy. I'll make a copy and send it to someone "on me".
