As this affects a lot of US Sony product users, I am passing this on:
=====================
The Sony Service Company internally announced a consolidation of its
in-house repair network on August 1, 2001. As a result of this change,
17 in-house Sony service and repair centers and satellite operations in
locations across the United States will close within the next 60 days,
leaving five remaining in-house Sony service operations. The remaining
locations will continue to receive products for repair from customers and
our authorized dealers as necessary. The remaining Regional Repair
Centers are as follows:
Fremont Regional Repair Center - Fremont, Ca.
Irvine Regional Repair Center - Irvine Ca.
Chicago Regional Repair Center - Niles, II.
Bristol regional Repair Center - Bristol, Pa.
Boston Regional Repair Center - Westwood, Ma.
More info is on their site at:

Subject: TAPERS NEEDED

please e-mail the below addys if you would like to send a reply
Please feel free to cut and paste this message on other lists or to anyone
you think might be interested. DBB is looking for tapers with their own rigs
meaning mics, dat deck, etc to tape their fall tour shows. Anyone who is
willing to tape a show and send me a copy on dat or cd will be put on the
guest list for that show. I can only put one taper per show on the guest
list. There is no limit on the number of tapers at any of our shows. We
encourage as many people as possible to tape. However, this deal is good for
only one taper per show. I put them on the guest list, they tape the show,
and send me a copy for the archives. Just about every fall show is available
except for the Philly and NYC dates at the end of Sept. Please contact me at
taperted@yahoo.com or taperted@deepbananablackout.com if interested.
Thanks BiLL from PHLORiDA

Hello all,
Anybody know what Janes Addictions' Taping policy is? I know they are
touring with Live and I thought that Live had a pro-taping stance. Maybe I
confused with their name. Thanks in advance - Joe

Subject: FS: APOGEE AD1000 package
Date: Mon, 10 Sep 2001 15:43:17 -0400 (EDT)
Please, don't make me an offer on this if you don't have the cash. I am
sorry to have to post this, but this happens EVERY time I have sold
something here.
All inquires should be directed to me at StevePoltzFan@webtv.net
Tthe package consists of:
AD1000 Platinum edition.
DA1000E-20.
PS1000.
Rack mount to hold the three units.
Power cable.
Original manuals for the AD and DA.
Both Apogee 15-pin cables to connect the DA and AD to the PS.
All units are in excellent working and physical condition. The AD1000
has been used once, since the AD2K+ units came out a year or so ago.
I still use the DA1000E-20 to this day. As I have told many people,
anyone that makes tapes with the AD1000 SHOULD own the DA1000.
Unless I find someone interested only in the DA1000 and PS1000, then
this will be sold as a package only.
Original pricetag was over $6000. Trying to get half was found to be
absurd. So, I am looking for $2500 or best offer. Don't hesitate to make
an offer.
Once again, all inquires should be directed to me at
StevePoltzFan@webtv.net
Thank you,
Eric in VT

I bought these mid '99. Used them 50 times max. They are in perfect
condition functionally and cosmetically. They have been sitting in their
boxes for about 5 months, since I upgraded to MBHO's. These are great
starter mics for anyone looking to get into taping! Looking to get $300
(check or money order) for the pair, plus $10 for shipping & insurance.
Email me with any questions....

hi,
did anyone tape this past sunday's long island folk and fiddle fest in
stony brook? it taped it from a radio simulcast, but the signal was less
than great. i got the second half pretty good, after getting home and doing
a rain dance around the antenna. i'd like to get a real clean copy( though
its 6 hrs) . i was suprised at the quality of the music, its a scene i'll
have to look into further.

Howdy folks,
I am still searching for the Ryan Adams show at the Fox Theater in
Boulder, CO from last month. I heard that someone taped it, but have
not had any luck finding the tape. Please, if anyone has or knows
who has this show please let me know. The link below is to my trade
list. I am not trading much right now, but would easily trade a
couple shows for this one. Also, anyone taping or planning on taping
any of his upcoming concerts please let me know.
Thanks!

Date: Mon, 10 Sep 2001 15:47:08 -0700
Hi There,
I just joined this list, and wanted to pose a question. I was just
wondering if anyone other than I have thought of the idea of recording
both ambient house sound and line input simultaneously (i.e. recording
with a mixer that has both the mike and a line input from the sound
board going out to the recorder). I've been doing this for a short time
with "mixed" results :).
My questions are, would anyone out there have any use for a mixer with
four inputs (two inputs for either one stereo mike, or two shotguns, and
two for line inputs from the sound board) and two outputs (to go to the
recorder)? If so, would you/have you actually buy/bought one? If you use
one, what make and model do you use? I'm trying to get a feel for how
many of us would actually purchase such a thing so I can try to coerce
the audio company I work for into building one. They may go for it, but
not if no one would buy it. Please feel free to e-mail me privately so
as to risk "cluttering up" the list. Thanks very much.

planning on running c1000s(hypers)>sbm1>d8 /15'up/XY. Anyone think I should
run ORTF instead? Anyone think I should run regular cards instead of hypers?
Please e-mail me privately if you have any tips on using c1000s in a small

Fellow recorders,
A Wired.com story discusses the Security Systems Standards
and Certification Act, sponsored by Sen. Fritz Hollings and
supported by the music and recording industries, which would
drastically rewrite current copyright laws.
http://www.wired.com/news/politics/0,1283,46655,00.html
In a nutshell:
It would *REQUIRE* copy-protection technology be included
in most consumer electronic devices and personal computers
to prevent the unauthorized duplication of digital music,
video and other copyrighted materials.
[The SSSC Act ...] backs up this requirement with teeth:
It would be a civil offense to create or sell any kind
of computer equipment that "does not include and utilize
certified security technologies" approved by the federal government.
It also creates new federal felonies, punishable by five
years in prison and fines of up to $500,000. Anyone who
distributes copyrighted material with "security measures"
disabled or has a network-attached computer that disables
copy protection is covered.
Please become proactive and write to your congresspersons.

Just hoping to connect with a local Austin taper who's
available to hit the Charlie Hunter / Will Bernard shows
this week (9/13 + 14) @ the Mercury Lounge. It'll be
a great reunion of TJ Kirk alumni!
I should be able to arrange guestlist access for you,
especially if you are running a full rig. But even if
you were just planning on a patch, please get in touch
and I'll see what i can do. I am Will's archivist so
of course I would hope that you would get there plenty
early to tape his opening set.
BW Tax - audio cdr only - each show takes 2 discs
Will Bernard & Motherbug 8/16/01 Oakland, onstage AKG 391's
- w/ Peter Apfelbaum sitting in
Charlie Hunter 5/13/01 Eugene OR with partial Motherbug opening set
-source : FOB AKG 483's for Charlie, onstage for Motherbug,
Will sits in with Charlie's group for an hour.

Doubtful, as it says "All data paths support up to 24 bit/96kHz
performance",
but I will let someone familiar withe card answer.
BTW, I think for $99 you can upgrade to SF5.0 which I believe supports
24bit.

Connect your DAT with a digital cable to a digital input on the DIO 2496.
> Have to use a specific program?
> Or I can use EAC, soundforge or similar softwares?
SoundForge will do it. Configure the program to recognize your
digital soundcard as the input. Set your sampling rate, etc. and
click on the record icon.

That is called taking a Noiseprint. You need the Sonic Foundy plug-in
called Noise Reduction for SoundForge.

EAC (must be configured properly, see links at www.etree.org) will extract
each track out to it's own wave file. Then use burn software to burn the
tracks.
CD Archtect will work for that, although there are much more efficient tools
such as CDRWin, Nero, Feurio and some people burn with EAC

guitarist/vocalist Trey Anastasio (one of America's
highest grossing acts)accepted John's invitation and
joined them mid-show, sitting in for a memorable night

Digging in to mutual favorite classics from Dylan and

I will pay your ticket, cdr(preferably) and postage.
I can't afford to pay for all these gigs, but i would specifically like the
new york gig this thursday, the last london gig on thurs 25 october, dutch
radio appearance on thurs 4 october, and some inbetween.
'Art Of Fighting' is an Australian band who are doing their first overseas
gigs. They're a mostly quiet guitar based sounding indie band.
Some songs are available for download if you want to have a listen to what
they're like:
http://www.artoffighting.com/songspage.htm
I'm not sure if they allow taping, so you'd probably have to go stealth.
I'm not sure how locked in these gigs are so you would have to check local
guides.

Does Herbie Hancock allow taping? I'm just curious because I will be
attending and upcoming show and need to know. If he does, I really need
some documentation to back this up. The people who run the auditorium are
very under-educated and for some odd reason consider a cell phone a
recording device...go figure. Anyway, please just let me know as soon as

Subject: ALD taping
Date: Tue, 11 Sep 2001 02:14:14 -0400
hey
just finished editing/transferring my 1st ALD recording, radiohead
8/20/01 at the hollywood bowl. the experience left me with some questions,
tho :
1. the ALD box could "sense" if there were headphones plugged into it, or
a mic pre. the red light would only be on if i plugged the box into the D8's
mic in, or if i were running headphones out of the ALD box as was intended.
ALD->line in on the D8 did not work, even if i was monitoring out of the D8
w/ headphones. also, it didn't matter what headphones i used; my own pair
was perfectly compatible. so why does the ALD feed have to go to the mic in,
not line in? also, it seemed the ALD output was a little too hot for the mic
input; cranking the level resulted in brickwalling, not a louder signal.
what strength attenuator would be appropriate for this situation? i didn't
have one :(
2. hum was a major issue. i filtered it out with rented outboard gear
later (well, reduced it anyway). what could be done to minimize hum on the
initial recording, aside from getting a less-crappy transmitter box? is hum
a common issue in this situation? would one of those ground-loop-breaker
black boxes you get for like 60 bucks at the guitar shop solve the problem
if used between the ALD and the deck?
for those that want the specific info on the tape, here is a copy of a mail
i sent out earlier:
> ok, i have the show edited and ready to go now. there's still some
>electrical hum present, and there's some slight peak distortion, but it's a
>pretty good listen. 124 min , 2 CDR
>recording details:
> ALD feed->D8 (mic in)
>edited:
> DAT(m)-> Roland SN-700 Hum Eliminator ->4-track mixer ->DAT->CDR
>
> using the SN-700 dramatically reduced the hum, but didn't completely
>eliminate it. using the processor cut out the highs a little bit, and made
>it a bit less transparent, but to my ears the trade off was very much worth
>it.
> the mixer was in there because i only had a stereo cable during the
>initial recording, so the master had sound in the L channel only... i
didn't use any of the board's EQ.
if you're really dying to hear it and have something really nice to offer
in return, we can prolly work something out...but i'm really very very busy
and have already promised this show to some people. i've got about all i can
handle here, sorry. it will circulate, tho, i promise. the tape's not quite
as exciting as it sounds, anyway. just think of it as a less-than-stellar
FM. (sorta).
so, thanks everyone, and take care.
rob
