All,
Thought I'd pass this link on as seems a pretty easy

Friends,
Among the victims of Tuesday's tragedy was a brother who some of you
might have known. His name was Peter Hansen and he and wife and
daughter were on the second plane to hit the WTC.
Peter grew up in Easton, CT, and moved to Boston. In 1987 we printed up
a thousand stickers, with a dancing bear in the center and the words
"This must be heaven - Spring tour '87" around the edges.
I would dearly appreciate it if any of you older heads who might have
one of these stickers could scan it and email the graphic to me, as I'm
putting together a webpage in his memory. If any of you knew Peter, I
would love to add your memories of him to the webpage.

Subject: 96k vs. 48k sample rates
Date: Thu, 13 Sep 2001 09:45:11 -0400
Hello readers...
As I move into the world of laptop based 24bit field recording, I'm posed
with the question of "what to buy for outboard mic pre and A/D".
As I've posted before, I'm leaning towards the M-audio Audio Sport Duo,
which should be ready for shipping at the end of this month. It is a
96k/24bit dual mic pre/phantom source and A/D that supplies both coax and
USB output. I have heard from midiman that the hold up is getting 96k/24bit
through PC's USB. It is also AC powered, but that is only an obstacle, and
I have several options to apply towards a solution there.
It does raise the issue of having to provide two external power sources.
One for it, and another for the laptop.
An AD2K, while quite possibly the "best" solution, is not an affordable one.
So, it's off my list.
The most "turn key" and cost effective solution I've seen is the Sound
Devices USBpre.
Basically the same thing, but it draws all its' power from the USB bus and
only does sample rates maxing at 48k. One beefy battery solution for the
laptop is all that is needed here. I like this streamlined approach.
My question is....
What would be the benefit of 96k over 48k?
I understand that it is 2x the amount of samples. That should basically
double the resolution of what is captured, correct?
It would also make me ready for DVD-a, just around the corner.
I've found DVD-R (IDE PC devices) coming down to $800 now. I can easily
remember when CD-RW was at that price and how quickly it fell. I expect
DVD-R to do the same.
I'm looking for opinions and suggestions.
I do not plan on spending more than $6-700 on anything. I understand that
limits me and my options, but that is ok. I strive to build the poor mans
high-res field rig.

Widespread Panic is coming to Austin and they will have reserved seating
at the Erwin Center. I didn't seen on the WSP web site any info about
taper tickets. How do they normally run taping when there is reserved
seating? Is it from your seat? Is there a taper section that you simply
have to purchase a reserved ticket for?
Thanks in advance...

Just a thought this morning, and I don't at all mean this to sound
irreverent or inconsiderate...
But, being the sound (and I mean that as a noun here) people that you are,
don't you think a d8/CSB on the spot recording would be at least if not more
historically valuable than the video footage they have been showing on tv?
I'm sometimes surprised that such things aren't recorded as these media
people go about their video taping.
I can sit here from the distance of Oregon (or from the distance of 2015 for
that matter) and try to imagine what went down, I can watch the same 3
seconds of video over and over and over. But to put on a pair of earphones,
close my eyes, and be dropped into the middle of the street below seems like
a much more valuable historical document.
Of course I know that nobody gave this a second thought as panic and horror
were ruling the moment but the networks should make a CSB/D8 rig standard
issue for people going into such things... it would be an incredible
document for history.

I can highly recommend the Midiman/M-Audio Audiophile 2496 PCI card. It
sounds very good, is unusually reasonably priced and installs cleanly in
almost all computer configurations. It has both analog I/O and coaxial
digital I/O. And it has Midi too -- useful if you're a musician.
You can find details about it on our Web page.
I hope this helps.

Subject: 11db or 20db attenuator cable for D100+CSC?
Date: Thu, 13 Sep 2001 19:03:19 +0000
hi all
i brickwalled for the first time last weekend with a D100 using Core Sound
Cardioids(with mic attenuator switch set to 20db)
will a 11db attenuator cable avoid this, or do i need a 20db one??
does anyone with this setup just go line in instead if you know it's going
to be a loud show??
i recorded a show tonight with the mics using line in and results seem ok.
levels peaked at about 12db.
this by-passes the mic pre-amp which is a probably a good thing, but i'm
losing dynamic range, and avoids adding another
component(attenuator cable) in the signal path...what's the best way to go?
thanks

I have a dat clone of Metallica, live in Sparta, KY, July 8 2000. This show
doesn't feature James on vocals (he was in a hospital), so the singing parts
have been covered by Jason, SOAD, Kid Rock and Korn.
Many jams and messed-up, funny 'Tallica tentatives. Running time is about 2
hours.
I will trade for any good 1991-1992 Metallica dat clones, or any other cool
rock/metal act.
Thanks for the space.

Hello Everyone,
I wanted to re-post this, but also to remind everyone to please reply to
me directly. I'd like to compile a list of responses both for posting to
this list, and for submitting to my colleagues here some time around
September 24th. Is this a reasonable length of time? So far about 8 or 9
people have replied, and for the most part, the response has been pretty
positive. However, I think it will take more replies than that to get my
company to start researching, developing, and actually building a mixer.
Thanks to everyone who has responded so far. If you've already replied,
there's no need to do it again. However, if you haven't responded and
you want your voice to be heard please let me know before September
24th. If people start telling me that isn't enough time, I'll see what I
can do about extending the deadline. Thanks very much once again.

Subject: Extend pause on PCM-M1?
Date: Thu, 13 Sep 2001 17:12:48 -0700
Besides being a budding DAT-head, I'm a scanner/SWL geek. I've
been using my PCM-M1 a little today as a rudimentary timecode
2-track, recording two different scanners for later playback.
What I'm wondering is whether it's possible to disable the
behavior of the machine to drop out of pause after a few minutes?
(Knowing full well the implications of this, of course, but this
is an extraordinary circumstance.) It takes so long for the tape
to load and start recording that it's not very useful for
quick conversations.
Actually, if anybody knows from other experience of a cheap
(read: consumer grade, voice-quality) VOX-operated timestamped recording
device, I'd love to hear about it.
Thanks...
