Hey Nick and all, I've been wondering about this myself. What's the advantage of having outboard A/D if you have a card that already has a 24 bit converter present? Could you possibly face a buffer underrun while trying to record? If that's the case you could do that while transferring any analog info also. I obviously see the benefit of an outboard pre but the A/D converter, that I'm skeptical about, there are some cards out there that claim to do a great job at 24 bit conversion... Here are some thoughts from the late great Dr. King.... "Violence as a way of achieving racial justice is both impractical and immoral. It is impractical because it is a descending spiral ending in destruction for all. It is immoral because it seeks to humiliate the opponent rather than win his understanding; it seeks to annihilate rather than to convert. Violence is immoral because it thrives on hatred rather than love. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction....The chain reaction of evil--hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars--must be broken, or we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation." M-Audio advertises the Audiophile 2496 as compatible with Windows 2000, but the drivers DO NOT SUPPORT S/PDIF OUTPUT from wav files on Windows 2000 machines. It's a really sweet solution for Windows 98 machines, but not yet a good choice for a unidecker who wishes to clone DATs on a Windows 2000 machine. I bought mine over 4 months ago and M-Audio promised updated drivers to address this issue "within a couple of weeks". There is still no solution and I see no evidence that they are pursuing a solution to this issue. Again, great card, but poor Windows 2000 support. It sounds as if this is the first time you've faced mic pre-amp overload after many successful field recordings. If that's so, I'd recommend that you start with an 11 dB attenuator cable. Also, be sure that you were using the "manual" setting. The "auto" setting can't keep up with quick level changes and will overload more easily. I hope that this helps. And it has Midi too -- useful if you're a musician. great card for dat>pc, but for those who want to get into 24-bit material, be warned. Although this is advertised as a 24-bit card, it will only work with certain apps that support wdm, such as cubase, nuendo, and sonar. It is NOT 24-bit compatable with more common apps such as soundforge 5.0 and winamp, which is likely what you'd prob. use to listen to some of the 24-bit stuff thats circualting these days... -Jamie > > > ------------------------------ From: -bob Subject: 96 Khz Hoopla Reply-To: bp@gti.net Date: Sat, 15 Sep 2001 00:49:12 -0400 No. Resolution is bits. As in 24 bit vs.16 bit. This gives dynamic range or "headroom." Sample rate primarily relates to frequency response, as in 0-24 KHz (48K sampling) vs. 0-48Khz (96K sampling). Since ear can respond basically from 40-16Khz, virtually no benefit exists. The older you are, the less it matters, as you upper limit drops in frequency with age. Some fanatics(?) and purists believe that psycho-acoustic properties are affected by sample rate. (Phase-shifts are an "addition" to frequency). Most folks can't seem to hear it and wouldn't consider doubling their file sizes and media costs for it. Others will send e-mails telling me that I'm deaf for not hearing the difference. :-) Cheers, -Bob (Who was at Led Zepplin and The Who "back in the days") >>My question is.... >>What would be the benefit of 96k over 48k? >>I understand that it is 2x the amount of samples.
