From: "DRider" <Hawkwind@mediaone.net> Subject: Digi-noise Date: Tue, 18 Sep 2001 07:35:52 -0400 Hey Now, I got a tape a few weeks back and it's full of digi-noise. I only played the first couple minutes and stopped the tape. It was pretty extreme. The person that sent it to me said that their tape heads were really dirty and thus the cause for the excessive digi-noise. If I try to record something new on this tape, will it gum up my heads? Should I just throw it away? Or is it safe to reuse? Thanx! D-R
From: "king lerxst" <kinglerxst@hotmail.com> Subject: Buddy Guy Taping Policy? Date: Tue, 18 Sep 2001 11:58:12 +0000 Just wondering if anyone knew Buddy Guy's taping policy, yes/no? I'll be taping the opener of a double bill who does allow taping, just curious if I'd be able to continue taping or not for Buddy Guy or if I would be able to bring a mic stand even for the opener. Thanks in advance for any info. Joe _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp
From: Gordon Gidluck <gidluck@swbell.net> Subject: Re: 24-bit recording does NOT provide greater resolution Date: Tue, 18 Sep 2001 08:35:19 -0500 A 20/24 bit recording is more accurate. Each bit doubles the number of available quantization values. A 24-bit recording does provide greater resolution, but when you convert back into a 16-bit number for storage on DAT or CD the lower bits are thrown away. (Dither can be added to help define values for the low order numbers at the 16-bit level, so we get a non-zero value in many instances.) Recordings made with 24-bit or 20-bit converters do sound better, even when the recording is subsequently converted to 16-bits. The greater detail does translate into better definition of the sound at lower levels. This is especially noticable with decay on sounds such as speaking or reverb tails. This is quite important in classical music, perhaps less significant in more amplified performances with higher decibel levels. I have heard it said that with 20-bits you can represent the full dynamic range available in an audio circuit. If we assume that is true, then having 24-bits to work in is still beneficial in that we have more room at the top to handle transients. The signal can be normalized later (with care) to take advantage of any unused headroom. Gordon

I am also looking to obtain a copy i.e. tape or cdr of a Jan Hammer/Jerry Goodman album called, "Like Children." I am relatively new to the fusion genre, so I don't have much to offer, but if you go to http://home.att.net/~meurglys3 , I'm sure you will find something of interest for trade. Asking price(not really negotiable) $700 + shipping for everything i also have a pair of AT933's that was purchased from the sound professionals. they are already mounted in croakies and have switchable bass roll-off on the battery box. the cables are already attached to the mics and there is an extra adapter in case you wanted to go into a pre-amp with XLR inputs. Asking price(not really negotiable) $200 + shipping for everything Serious offers only and email me off the list please =) ================ chuck tombasco http://monkey-man.50megs.com _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp
From: "William J. LaPier" <veemeser@velocitus.net> Subject: ISO SKB Portland and Blaine on DAT/SHN Date: Tue, 18 Sep 2001 11:19:47 -0700 hey friends, i've searched high and low for the onstage recordings from the recent ( may '01 ) portland and blaine shows on dat. i'm still searching, but i'm may be interested in dat>wav>shn if someone has it. i'd prefer no cdr in between wav and shn, if at all possible. and known source is grately appreciated. my skb and skb related list is growing (~60 shows ) so i may have something of interest to trade. all my kimock stuff ( 99 % onstage tapes--c61's, nak 700's, mk21's... ) is on dat, so a dat trade is possible. i can transfer these to cdrs/shns if need be though. hope someone can help me out here ;^) thanx. bill btw--what happened to the kimock setlist page? http://canufeelit.com/Robert/kimocksetlists.html seems to be down. any others out there?

Now that they officially allow taping, the hope is that more recordings will begin to circulate. Please note: NO MP3 sourced trades allowed on this list! There is a great deal of D that circulates in MP3 form, however this list will contain only pure uncompressed and losslessly compressed formats that are digital clones of the masters (DAT>CD, DAT>shn, CD>CD, DAT>DAT). So please, sign up for the list, go out and tape the D and let's start circulating the shows. To subscribe, send an email to: digi-d-subscribe@yahoogroups.com -Beau Ps- Sorry for the cross-post, but I know there is interest in the D on these lists. --- Beau Colburn teampossum@mindspring.com

From: Richard Davis <wehideandseek@yahoo.com> Subject: pre-amp Date: Tue, 18 Sep 2001 13:57:04 -0700 (PDT) Namaste Y'all! thanks for the replies to my 7-pin questions...i'll get back to those individuals soon... Now for the hard part - it seems my DMic20 has shit the bed as well :( It has been a work horse for me and i love the A>D / phantom pre-amp combo, but admit to being nonplussed re: the lil toggle switches that lay down only before the all-mighty toothpick. I love the clarity of the Apogee's i've heard, but since i love to stealth (and it loves me!) i'd like to have the best of all worlds in one (sorta) lil package. Any reccomendations? Anything out there for sale? I'm also thinking about upgrading my cables. What i have of my rig that works ;) are Microtech Gefell 300's, my trusty M-1, a Tascam DA-302, and the Samson Mixpad 4. Some pre-amp/A>D combo that goes well with the above is what i'm after. thanks for the space and time take care richard from flagstaff BWT: i only got one reply for that Living Daylights show (09.04.01 Flag) so i'll still take two more B&P's! __________________________________________________ Terrorist Attacks on U.S. - How can you help? In the event, I got a few leads, but all ran cold. Until I found a dealer who could supply one for the princely sum of $250 or so. So, I wonder if anyone has a junked one with its lead intact they would be willing to part company with. I am looking for the lead specifically. From: "Gary Davis" <gdavis@loop.com> Subject: More details on the new Virus (Nimda) Reply-to: gdavis@loop.com Date: Tue, 18 Sep 2001 17:27:39 -0700 Here is more information I was able to obtain from SAVRC on the new virus. It looks like people running Outlook vers. 5 and below and Eudroa 5 or below are particularly vulnerable, and should upgrade or patch immediately. These people can be infected just by opening the message, without clicking on any attachments. --Gary 1. The Readme.exe attachment is not visible ONLY in certain versions of Outlook (version 5 and below). The reason why is because the e-mail message that contains the worm is actually malformed, so it is encoded in a way that confuses e-mail program, causing the attachment to not be visible. 2. As mentioned above, Nimda was designed specifically to be malformed. Thus, it confuses Outlook into thinking the worm is a .wav or music file. Outlook is configured automatically to play or launch .wav files without the need to double-click on the attachment. 3. Although users can be infected by the worm by double-clicking on the attachment from any e-mail program, only Eudora (versions 5 and below) and Outlook can launch the worm without double-clicking on the attachment. These answers are from Carey Nachenberg of Symantec Security Response. # # #

From: Brad Wiseman <wiseman@redhawkaig.com> Subject: Audiophile 2496 for Win2k Reply-To: Brad Wiseman <wiseman@redhawkaig.com> Date: Tue, 18 Sep 2001 22:08:06 -0700 Thanks to Doug Nawrocki for goading me into attempting the installation of the latest M-Audio drivers on Win2k... again! As it turns out, it is possible to get the Audiophile 2496 to do both S/PDIF input and S/PDIF output on a Win2k machine. The problem is not with the hardware. The problem is with M-Audio's instructions on how to do it. I agreed to post the details if I ever got it to work, so here goes... I did a lot of messing around with this, so I hope I have identified the critical details. (If nothing else, maybe this poor attempt will inspire M-Audio to revise their installation instructions for Win2k machines.) 0) Ignore M-Audio's instructions (they don't work). 1) Download the latest Delta drivers (called wdm512120.exe). 2) Download the latest Delta Uninstaller. 3) Run wdm512120.exe which loads the drivers onto a floppy disk. 4) In Device Manager, right click on M Audio Delta Audiophile and choose "uninstall". 5) Hit Start/Run and hit the Browse button. 6) Browse to the location where you stored the Delta Uninstaller. 7) Select Delta Uninstaller.exe and hit OK. 8) Hit OK. 9) Hit the resulting button that removes the drivers. 10) Restart your computer. 11) DO NOT allow Windows to proceed with installing the "new" hardware it finds. If you proceed, Windows installs some of its own plug-n-play drivers. There are a couple of other buttons that you have to hit in order to shut down the plug-n-play wizard. 12) In Device Manager, right click on the Sound, Video and Game Controller device that has a yellow circle and exclamation mark on it. 13) Select Properties. 14) Choose reinstall drivers. (I'm writing this from memory so hit the button with the most similar label.) 15) Choose to specify a device and browse to your floppy containing the drivers you stored in step 3. 16) Follow the rest of the on-screen instructions and let it reboot your machine. I think these are the critical steps to install the latest drivers and make them work on your Win2k machine. I did a lot more than these steps, but these are the steps that I think resulted in loading the drivers correctly. -- L8r, Brad Wiseman mailto:wiseman@redhawkaig.com
